Sorry guys, but I wanted to make sure that I got all the lyrics correct. We are here in GA having our Family Labor Day celebration. While beginning the festivities with our annual fish fry, I asked two of my great-aunts (89 and 94 year olds) about the song. One of them recoiled and the other went straight into it. I played the video for them and they looked at me funny. LOL!!! Once the three of us started singing it, like 5 or 6 cousins (47-73 year olds) came over and started singing with us. Too cool! Apparently, my great-grandma either did some editing or she didn't remember all the words. We worked together and got them all. Surprisingly, my teen cousins were both entertained and shocked by the discussion about the meanings of the lyrics and have now learned it.

My paternal Grandparents were born in the 1890's. They were retired country School Teachers from rural Georgia. Granddad was kicked by a mule as a child, the injury made him too crippled to farm, so he taught school. They retired and bought a country store in rural South Carolina's coastal plains.Their customers were mostly poor share croppers. They grew crops and paid a "share" of what they grew to the land owner . Some picked cotton for $1.00 per day, my brother did that too, for 3 days! The store was a basic home attached to a store, tin roof, huge Coca Cola sign festooned with climbing roses. For kids, it was a great place to visit, I was there often in summer (we lived in Savannah). My sweet Grandmother sang me to sleep with this song from the time that I was 3 (I was born in 1950 in Texas),. Once I was 5, I graduated to poetry; she would recite poems of romantic poets like Wordsworth and Longfellow from memory, verse after verse committed to her incredible memory. Often accompanied by rain on the tin roof, it was a wonderful way to fall asleep. Sweet song and sweet poetry, Grandma was amazing!
This is such a sad song when you listen to the words ... I didn't realize this was an original song, I thought it was from the Depression Era - great writing!

Grandma used to sing this to me, she took care of me after my mama left and my daddy was either drunk or at work. Kinda morbid when I think on it too long lol but I still sing this to every baby in the church nursery, calms them right down
This was written for the movie!! By these ladies. Just how old are you??
If these three would do an album (cd) together, I'd buy two!
Hello Catherine
How are you doing today?
A Capella in it’s purest form ! Yikes good !
When you listen to this, close your eyes and listen to how their voices are so perfect and work together like instruments. Wow.
Alison Krauss, a flawless voice
Hello Sue, How are you doing?
I need to watch Oh Brother, Where Art Thou one more time!
Yeah, you do.
Hello ,how are you doing, how is the weather treating you?
Ohhh, this is what real talent looks and sounds like...got it thank you
three beautiful singers emmy lou Gillian and Alison, gifted voices shared so eloquently and humbly❤pure voices real and raw!
Hello Dear
How are you doing today?
Love this!
Hello ,how are you doing, how is the weather treating you?
Just heavenly. Never thought that a lullaby could be so powerfully sung. ELH creates another masterclass..
Her harmonies make everyone sound better!
David, these ladies have God’s gift. Which we should enjoy, I know I do.
Now that is how you sing. Pure talent , no major scales to sing just pure talent
This is the soundtrack I listened to on repeat when I was in labor with my son 19 1/2 years ago. This song will always remind me of that night.
Not only do they nail the harmonies, but to get this just right they had to match each other's inflections. All that very intentional sliding into and out of notes doesn't work if only one of them does it. Just fantastic work with nothing but 3 people's voices.
Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Your momma's gone away and your daddy's gone to stay
Didn't leave nobody but the baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Everybody's gone in the cotton and the corn
Didn't leave nobody but the baby
You're a sweet little baby
You're a sweet little baby
Honey in the rock and the sugar don't stop
Gonna bring a bottle to the baby
Don't you weep pretty baby
Don't you weep pretty baby
She's long gone with the red shoes on
Gonna meet another lovin baby
Don't you weep pretty baby
Don't you weep pretty baby
You and me and the devil makes three
Don't need no other lovin baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Go to sleep you little baby
Come and lay your bones on the alabaster stones
And be my ever lovin baby
Absolutely amazing
Anyone else think this song is dark as FUCK? Love it.
Yeah so much for it being a lullaby.
yes I think so too
You and me and the devil makes three.
It's really not hard to see what it's about. Very sinister.
it sounds like a teenaged girl and her step father. like he's trying to either seduce her or force her to do it with him
Oh Brother Where Art Thou is one of my favourite movies, in part because of the music.
Love those three, and such a sweet soulfoul song.
My late husband was good friends to these beautiful ladies and many more out of Austin, Tx. Amazing life & wife of a music man
Hello Wella 👋 how are you ??
Haunting and simply beautiful!
3 individually great singers. Harmony and vocals blended here is great for such a short song!
Sounds like an old southern gospel...luv it
So beautiful💜💙💚
They are beautiful and in charge!
Go girls
This is such a sad song when you listen to the words ... I didn't realize this was an original song, I thought it was from the Depression Era - great writing!
Still the best version I have ever heard. Most other versions I've heard are too polished, this one feels just right and naturally harmonious.
Truly angelic voices .
Emmylou is the Queen and Alison is right behind her with her gorgeous, mournful voice. I'm not as familiar with Gillian's work, but this song is perfect...and no autotune needed!
Gillian Welch is the song’s composer
Trust me, Gillian is right there with Emmylou and Allison.
Oh.. .such beautiful ladies + voices. Just beautiful.
Hello Lisa
