- Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and Alison Krauss sing their song from "Oh Brother where art thou"
I do not own any of this content.
The mention 'in sync' goes to indicate I have sychronised sound and image from an earlier post.
I rocked my 2 year old stepdaughter every single night, singing this song to her, 20+ years ago. She never wanted to go to sleep, and I had a big rocker that had belonged to my grandmother. When she was a teenager, she asked me once, "Remember when you used to rock me?". Oh, I do! It was one of my favorite times in the whole world. I had no kids of my own. She was my only baby.
that's where "the devil makes three" comes from...
No effects, no auto-tune. Just pure talent.
Damn Skippy.
You got that right!
This song really makes you understand the sailors following the sirens in the Odyssey.
Reading the classics good man 👍
Three pure beautiful voices. no auto-tune. no effects. Just talent.
Amen to that!
At my age, (58 yrs) I'm sorry to say that I've never heard of Gillian Welch. However, her brilliant talent combined with the incomparable vocal gifts from God in Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss in this rendition is just ethereal platinum magic. I got so very swept up listening to it that there's no wonder the Cohen bros. chose to use it for their crazy-good movie.
I agree with you! ❤
She has a lot of great songs with David Rawlings on here!
I recommend watching The Chieftains: Down The Old Plank Road - The Nashville Sessions ✨you won’t regret it ❤🍀🎻☘️🪕
Welch is great. America should be proud.
This song won me over for the whole movie, once I saw this scene I was hooked for the entire film. George Clooney played perfect part
He done a good job
@David Priscak #AVESATANAS
I absolutely agree. This sing was the acme of the movie
Clooney's the biggest American film star since -- my Lord, who? Gable? Jimmy Stewart?
I bet you were /wink
Regardless of what music taste you have, I think anyone can hear this song and get a weird sensation well up inside them. Haunting, hypnotic, sweet, and beautiful all at the same time.
I feel it in my soul
It calls to you, like the Sirens of Greek mythology.
The fact that Emmylou is involved makes this so incredible. She is one of those artists that is supreme!
Kentucky hills and Appalachian Mountains is what created this sound...these ladies should have sung more often together!
Actually..... Gillian and Emmy Lou have done it together live a few times I saw, or got a recording of. Alison was not at the Fests.. so...we missed out on her.
Technically "Bluegrass" will have instruments. This? It's old time folk/gospel/appalacian.
Emmy, Gillian, Alison are elite at doing Harmony. About all that's missing is Linda Ronstadt who'd done great harmony with Emmy.
Americana
Perhaps, but it’s not far off from Scottish and Irish folk songs that were brought over. It’s got more “soul” infusion. But most of bluegrass is straight up Celtic music with an American south vocal inflection.
One time
@@rerobertson82 Brought over from the old country by the Scots-Irish immigrants during the colonial times.
No over production. No vocal gymnastics. Just a pure rendition of a simple, heartfelt lyric.
This is one of the most beautiful songs, sang by the most harmonic voices i have ever heared.
My " youngen " is 12.. he JUST found out where HIS sleepy song came from!!... SO wonderful he really thought his mama could write something like this and 2nd... he just said " Dang mama YOU can sing! Those ladies are on tv and you'd give'em a run fer thier money i KNOW IT! " Mamas heart swells with pride!
That's so sweet! You're heart swelled with pride. Mine made it hard to swallow. Very touching.
Isn’t it just lovely to hear the actual words to the song. It’s the way it used to be back in my day.
Emmylou Harris,Gillian Welch and Allison Krauss?...Oh My!!!
Gillian Harris
wife's mom could be her twin voice and look lol
What?
This is pure talent. No effects, no autotune, just three beautiful voices.
I’ve been listening to the movie’s soundtrack since I was 6-7 years old. Every morning my dad would play it while driving us to school and I loved this song (along with down to the river to pray). I miss those mornings sometimes, I eventually saw the movie in high school and it made my day.
Down to the river to pray is one of the most auditorily pleasing songs of all time. Allison Krauss is what I imagine angels must sound like.
I've been a huge fan of the music from that movie since the first time I saw it. I love classic rock but whatever genre you may prefer, you're not human if you don't fall in love with the acapella harmonies of these three legendary superstars. Thanks for posting, as I didn't know it was these 3 classy ladies singing until I saw this. Absolutely the 2nd most beautiful harmony I've ever heard, hands down, after "Down to the River to Pray".
+Victor Rowe I bought the soundtrack just for this song....... it wasn't on it!! LOL
Really? That doesn't even seem fair.
I know right, LOL but thanks to RUclips I can listen anytime!!
+Tina W its is on there
+Tina W It's on my copy.
I have found a whole NEW appreciation for "OLD TIMEY RELIGION" music - I can't get enough of it.
+Rene Andre If you havent already, check out the Louvin Brothers!
Nothing like it. Good for the heart and soul.
:)
This is real music...Thank you so much that we still have people that have voices this great so that they don't need auto tune and crap like that to mess up their natural talent...I look up to these 3 women so much!!!! Especially Allison...
3 of the most distinct voices you'll ever hear ! AMAZING !
ok yes they r truly amazing
Three beautiful voices that blend together like silk. Lovely!
If when I die I get to hear the angels sing, I'm sure this is what they will sound like!
+jason s you don't know that to a certainty
+Knight192 probably why he said "if"...
+tallred67 why you say probably?
+panhead58ful Jason said "If...". Knight192 came back with "You don't know...". My comment was pointing out that that's probably why Jason said "If", because he didn't know for certain. Cool?
Hopefully they wont mention the devil. haha
Hell...sounds better than the movie...if u listen thru headphones, the harmonising is on point...loved it. Bluegrass in its finest!
Beautiful song. What harmony.
These dear ladies...those voices still give me chill up and down the spine. Simply beautiful.
Perfect match up voice! rarely see three voices going hand in hand as beautiful as this!
They may not have written it...but they certainly did perform it. The very definition of southern charm and vocal perfection.
Holy crap! That is and always has been one of my favorite movies, I had no idea these 3 wonderful ladies sang this song for it! Just makes it even better! :)
Incredible harmonies. God bless these women.
Hauntingly beautiful. Gives me goosebumps.
Harris, Krauss and Welch! Thse ladies can sing!! Gotta love that bluegrass sound.
I died and woke in heaven to see and hear three angels thanks.
"You and me and the devil makes three" what a great line
Thats my favorite part i don't know why
Say what you will, Emmylou Harris is a beautiful women and gifted singer.
I agree on both counts.
Yes she is!!!
Thomas Pigg i agree!
I've always been amazed how she seems to get prettier with age. =)
Who would argue? 😍
Man this song just gives me the chills. So soothing.
What a synthesis of natural beauty, talent and effort...
That's the first time I've cried cause of a song in most of my life. Very impressive, very powerful.
This girl touches something she sings beautiful touches all your emotions Thank You so much the guitar adds to a beautiful accomplainment🌺🌺
Simple but beautiful. Great harmonies from three great women.
A rain squall coming through the area.
I opened the den door so we could hear the sounds of the rain fall and I held the wife close while singing this to her.
70 is the next stop for me and while there are not many stops ahead, this one was particularly enjoyable, and she drifted off to sleep pleasantly.....in spite of my severely lacking vocal talents.
A very nice post for we old fools.
Thank you so much.
Luv man of constant sorrow & this one, no, all of these songs, movie. Great harmony going on, etc!
Oh man what angelic voices by equally angelic ladies - these are the core Americans that I have deeply admired for most of my life - their creativity knows no bounds
Go to Sleep baby ! Loved the Song ! O Brother Where Art Thou.
wow they are even breathing in harmony. awesome
Saw them do this song live...LONG time ago now!! It was great, make you want to cry....perfect harmony.
Not only this song but all the songs in the movie was beautiful
That's how actual singers find their key before starting. No autotune there, just talent.
A chord was played. The ladies found their individual pitch in that chord.
A heavenly trio...for all precious babies...
I love their crystal clear voices ! Beautiful , voices of angels
Just finding this now, it sounds exactly like it does in the movie. I usually expect them to touch stuff up in post. But wow!! What an amazing trip
Gives me goosebumps to listen to this song. Haunting yet beautiful!
Emmylou Harris is one of the most beautiful and talented women to walk this planet.
Such a perfect combination of beautiful voices. This scene is enchanting, mainly because of the song.
Couldn't tell ya how much I love this song.
Absolutely Incredible live performance
Incredible ... These girls own it. No one comes close.
Ole Folk! Absolutely the most enchantingly beautiful song and voices.

And her voice make angels cry.....and myself aswell when im in that kinda mood.....music can make you feel many different things.....but when its so beautiful you weep.....well it doesnt get any better
this is the reason why i bought the soundtrack to Oh, Brother, along with all the other outstanding music on it.
Love it. Perfect harmony. :-) Three talented women.
Everytime I hear this I'm entranced. It's just fabulous.
I must admit before the O Brother movie I did not like this kind of music, I just didn't know better and was ignorant to the beauty of it. These song gives me the chills, it's beautiful.
Is this three angels singing? Sure sounds like it. I can envision hearing these voices as one rises to meet his or hers maker. So beautiful and soothing.
This is the soul-satisfying "You know you're alive whether you're singing it or listening to it" kind of music.
deze drie dames geweldig om ze samen te horen, heel heel veel kippenvel
Wonderful job ladies.
Great job, beautiful and very suggestive song. 'Don't need no other lovin' baby' indeed!
Love the comforting melody contrasted by the eerie lyrics. Folk musicologist Alan Lomax collected this song during his travels in the South in the 1930s.
Sang this to my daughter, when she was an infant. It worked!
Gillian looks like the perfect "mountain girl" to me and they all sing like angels.
Love this song . Simple , but makes you visualise . Talented ladies xx
I love Emmy and Allison harmonizing together!

Music Krazy that’s my city!!
These ladies need to sing more together!!!!
Pure southern singing!!!! ❤❤❤I'm missing so many southern voices...Johnny Cash,,Elvis(he may have sung Rockabilly but he was from the South)......"the voice of the South"Ralph Stanley"...miss you Ralph!! I love "Deep South " music...I'm a southern girl living in a Yankee world.I'll return to my Dixie someday😭😭😭😭
In some parts of Africa this song is still sung but in local languages and it just happened i was looking for the song and landed here good voices
let's not lose sight of the beauty inherent in these lyrics, and in the music
Just WOW. ACAPELLA! fabulous
@blunthead27 It's called talent.Three of the best female bluegrass singers ever to grace the stage.
harmony to perfection..
yes!
These ladies are gorgeous, and the song is Exquisite, I could listen to them forever. Like in these times. Stay safe.
God, that's beautiful.
The song was written by singer/songwriter Gillian Welch who specializes in dark themed songs. She wrote this one based on a one verse song. I got this from her biography. In spring of 1999, T Bone Burnett came to Nashville to record the soundtrack for O Brother, Where Art Thou? At T Bone’s suggestion, Gillian wrote the Siren song "Didn’t Leave Nobody But the Baby", based on a single verse of a traditional lullaby.
My mother sang a version of this song to me when I was little. The lyrics don't make much sense, but they were
"Go to sleep you little baby, go to sleep you little baby, and when you wake I'll bake you a cake with all the pretty little horses. One is black, and one is white, and one is the color of molasses. So go to sleep you little baby..."
It just repeats from there. I always imagined a cake decorated with horses, like a carousel.
It sounds like your mom blended it a bit with "All the Pretty Little Horses." Not quite the same, but the naming horse colors is similar.
omg my grand ma and mom sang that too me too..mine was:
go to sleep you little baby ,when you wake we'll patty patty cake and ride all the colored little horses, some will be pink and some will be white and some will be all the colors of molasses ,to go to sleep you little baby... and then repeat,
also "O'danny boy"
and "loch Lomond"
my mother's great grandpa was from Aberdeen Scotland..
my dad's side west Virginia then England.
oh and there was one about an ELF
"
I met a little elf man one day down where the lilies bloom, I asked him why he was so small and why he did not grow , he quietly looked me up and down and then he said to me, I'm quite as big for me says he, as you are big for you"
( that was it ha ha)
I thought they said that they wrote the song for the movie O brother?
Thank you both Cat and Cal - makes more sense as a genuine lulluby now. Love it.
Mistress Dreama Wonderful story🍀
LOVE LOVE this song! Makes ya feel good inside!
Sweet little voices.............

Cross between a field hollar and a lullaby - I love it.
