We had some problems with corruption in the last 2 years because of some democratic socialist government, but it thankfully failed this autumn. Sure, there were some good parts back in the communist days, like most of infrastructure and the heaviest building in the world(Palace of the Parliament from Bucharest) being build during those times and zero external debts. But in the end, what was "the good" of the country was built on the back of the population. In the last years of communism there were some major problems with food, which was also a factor that led to the revolution. The only similarity that remains is that we are still divided after 1989 into 2 countries, such as was West and East Germany. Romania and Moldova, 2 countries with the same language, the same history and the same origin. I do not know how it is in the Czech Republic now, but in Romania the standard of living is definitely much better.

I lived in Pyg 10 years ago for 4 years. i have flew those ilyusin and tupolev many times on the Bjg-Pyg route and even to Vladivostok. My impression, is that the pilots are very skillfull and with the outdated fleet, Air Koryo is understandably impressive.

it's definitely not a 1 star airline... they say so because of politics... it's actually pretty good, the service is good, the staff is polite and good looking, food is genuine and good overall... not the best ok, but not the worst... actually much better than United
Well, I'm sure they are super nice and all but this is business class. There is no on-board entertainment, food is served in aluminum trays and they try to sell tax-free crap to you. Don't get me wrong, I would love to fly that plane but I get the 1 star compared to other companies.
Being a diplomat staff posted in Pyongyang, I fly with AK quite often, and I enjoy it every time. The unique interactions with the flight attendants, the atmosphere, very attentive, well-mannered, elegant and attractive staff make it a memory to remember, though the flight from PY to Beijing is far superior in this regard. It is usually far less crowded, and often, a flight attendant would sit next to you if there is an empty seat and start a conversation, especially if they see you can speak Korean. I've had that happen to me many times, and I really can't imagine that happening on any other flight anywhere else. The only undeniable downside is that their planes are pretty old, though not as old as they used to be. Still, it doesn't mean there is an actual risk of a disaster during the flight, and considering what some other things in DPRK look like (especially outside the capital city), it's not so bad at all. If you're looking for the *really* worst airlines, look towards Nepal, Afghanistan, or most mid- or low-range airlines in some Arab countries. I've seen things there you wouldn't believe.
Yeah i highly doubt Etihad and Emirates are worse than Koryo… no matter what flaws they may have, even just in terms of presentation and ambience…no way. The only bad thing I see here is how old the Soviet era planes are, and also the shitty food and drink options don’t seem to make sense. Or look appetizing even for plane food. The Kimbap might be good but again it’s plane food either way. Moreover, I think the Arab airlines they’re referring to are the cheap, “regional” (and possibly unregulated) “airlines” in remote parts of the Middle East or Nepal. Basically they’re just pilots with planes that people know about and maybe pay him for his services, on a random schedule, lol. And they likely only serve those areas. Emirates and Etihad are internationally known with flights everywhere.

I flew on this airline in November 2017. It is far better than Air Canada, Westjet, and United, which are all considered "top" airlines. The seats in economy are large and very comfortable, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the flight attendants much friendlier. Even the infamous Koryo burger isn't too bad; just eat the mystery meat and toss the bun aside. At least they give food to eat, unlike North American airlines. Out of 5, I would rate this airline at least 3.5, if not 4.

Forgetting for one moment that it's the airline of North Korea, that short haul business class looks rather good. Actually looks like better service than the new BA Club Europe (which is just economy seating with the middle seat being unallocated). Not a big fan of Asian food but the in-flight catering on that flight looked good quality and plentiful. Not sure if it;s fair to say it's the worlds worse ever airline - Ryanair, FlyBe etc don't provide any complementary catering and the legroom is poor. Airline service may look good but I still don't want to try it out by travelling to somewhere so dangerous.
Keith Appanah I did hear a couple times a year they do a flight between China and I want to say Vietnam or Malaysia, though these flights aren't often, regardless though, one way to safely try it out
I noticed the way food was laid out - it was clearly sparingly arranged as if every peach slice or carrot was a metaphor for a special luxury - reports of food shortages aside, it clearly shows that what we in the West consider everyday food, is treated with a great deal more respect - and loved the stirring music in the background - very appropriate. International travel, or air travel in general, is not accessible for the vast majority of North-Koreans, so most of the people coming through the airport are foreign tourists.
Actually I've taken Air Koryo from Shenyang, with their Antonov, and I have to say, it was one of the best airline I've taken... The seats are very spacious (economy class) and everyone is nice, the crew is always trying to help you. The only problem I got was when I arrived in Pyongyang and wanted to take a video out the window, they almost took me my camera. They really don't deserve this 1* rating. I've been travelling with a LOT of companies, (ukrainian, air france, cathay pacific, qantas, delta and more), and most were worse than Koryo
plus Air Canada doesnt offer complimentary meal service within North America. Food in business class is eatable, as long as they dont forget to change their menu....

Air Canada should be rated 1 star (lost baggage, impossible to talk to a human even after holding for 2 hours, refunds take forever, rude staff, arbitrary cancellations). Air Koryo is actually something closer to 3.5 or 4 stars. The only downside is that their fleet is old, but considering that they are well maintained and there has never been any accidents, it is not a huge problem.

It's more to do with certain air authorities not being convinced by their air safety, so they have a bad rating and are forbidden to fly from many airports, part of it is political but also a lot of developed countries have high standards of safety and professionalism that small airlines from less developed countries often can't meet.

Sure, there were some good parts back in the communist days, like most of infrastructure and the heaviest building in the world(Palace of the Parliament from Bucharest) being build during those times and zero external debts. But in the end, what was "the good" of the country was built on the back of the population. In the last years of communism there were some major problems with food, which was also a factor that led to the revolution.
The only similarity that remains is that we are still divided after 1989 into 2 countries, such as was West and East Germany. Romania and Moldova, 2 countries with the same language, the same history and the same origin.
I do not know how it is in the Czech Republic now, but in Romania the standard of living is definitely much better.

I lived in Pyg 10 years ago for 4 years. i have flew those ilyusin and tupolev many times on the Bjg-Pyg route and even to Vladivostok. My impression, is that the pilots are very skillfull and with the outdated fleet, Air Koryo is understandably impressive.

Being a diplomat staff posted in Pyongyang, I fly with AK quite often, and I enjoy it every time. The unique interactions with the flight attendants, the atmosphere, very attentive, well-mannered, elegant and attractive staff make it a memory to remember, though the flight from PY to Beijing is far superior in this regard. It is usually far less crowded, and often, a flight attendant would sit next to you if there is an empty seat and start a conversation, especially if they see you can speak Korean. I've had that happen to me many times, and I really can't imagine that happening on any other flight anywhere else.
The only undeniable downside is that their planes are pretty old, though not as old as they used to be. Still, it doesn't mean there is an actual risk of a disaster during the flight, and considering what some other things in DPRK look like (especially outside the capital city), it's not so bad at all.
If you're looking for the *really* worst airlines, look towards Nepal, Afghanistan, or most mid- or low-range airlines in some Arab countries. I've seen things there you wouldn't believe.
Yes Etihad and Emirates are worst when compared to Air Koryo they offer to less service than Air Koryo offers! LOL.

Yeah i highly doubt Etihad and Emirates are worse than Koryo… no matter what flaws they may have, even just in terms of presentation and ambience…no way. The only bad thing I see here is how old the Soviet era planes are, and also the shitty food and drink options don’t seem to make sense. Or look appetizing even for plane food. The Kimbap might be good but again it’s plane food either way.
Moreover, I think the Arab airlines they’re referring to are the cheap, “regional” (and possibly unregulated) “airlines” in remote parts of the Middle East or Nepal. Basically they’re just pilots with planes that people know about and maybe pay him for his services, on a random schedule, lol. And they likely only serve those areas. Emirates and Etihad are internationally known with flights everywhere.

I flew on this airline in November 2017. It is far better than Air Canada, Westjet, and United, which are all considered "top" airlines. The seats in economy are large and very comfortable, the atmosphere is pleasant, and the flight attendants much friendlier. Even the infamous Koryo burger isn't too bad; just eat the mystery meat and toss the bun aside. At least they give food to eat, unlike North American airlines. Out of 5, I would rate this airline at least 3.5, if not 4.

Forgetting for one moment that it's the airline of North Korea, that short haul business class looks rather good. Actually looks like better service than the new BA Club Europe (which is just economy seating with the middle seat being unallocated). Not a big fan of Asian food but the in-flight catering on that flight looked good quality and plentiful. Not sure if it;s fair to say it's the worlds worse ever airline - Ryanair, FlyBe etc don't provide any complementary catering and the legroom is poor.
Airline service may look good but I still don't want to try it out by travelling to somewhere so dangerous.

I noticed the way food was laid out - it was clearly sparingly arranged as if every peach slice or carrot was a metaphor for a special luxury - reports of food shortages aside, it clearly shows that what we in the West consider everyday food, is treated with a great deal more respect - and loved the stirring music in the background - very appropriate. For me that considers as safe already. It has been 33 years since the incident.

Jason Tung Well they did not fly much abroad during 90s, but take note that they are still maintaining IL-62Ms for an example from early 80s. Its not that easy to keep in shape aircraft which for spares are getting rare.

Actually I've taken Air Koryo from Shenyang, with their Antonov, and I have to say, it was one of the best airline I've taken... The seats are very spacious (economy class) and everyone is nice, the crew is always trying to help you. The only problem I got was when I arrived in Pyongyang and wanted to take a video out the window, they almost took me my camera.
They really don't deserve this 1* rating. I've been travelling with a LOT of companies, (ukrainian, air france, cathay pacific, qantas, delta and more), and most were worse than Koryo

Air Canada should be rated 1 star (lost baggage, impossible to talk to a human even after holding for 2 hours, refunds take forever, rude staff, arbitrary cancellations). Air Koryo is actually something closer to 3.5 or 4 stars. The only downside is that their fleet is old, but considering that they are well maintained and there has never been any accidents, it is not a huge problem.

It's more to do with certain air authorities not being convinced by their air safety, so they have a bad rating and are forbidden to fly from many airports, part of it is political but also a lot of developed countries have high standards of safety and professionalism that small airlines from less developed countries often can't meet.
