In September 2016, I travelled to North Korea to attend the country's first ever air show; Wonsan AirShow. It was the most exotic air show I have ever attended, with a line-up of the rare Soviet vintage fleet of Air Koryo, the usual off limits of the North Korean Air Force, many joy flights on Air Koryo and the possibility to meet with North Koreans freely at the air show.
The air show was an unqualified smash hit! showing off North Korea’s aviation scene and bringing together foreign visitors and locals without hindrance, for the first time in the country’s history.
In the video, I also share what's it like to fly on Air Koryo's exotic fleet. From the modern Tupolev 204 to the vintage classic IL-18, IL-62, IL-76 and Tu-154. It is definitely an exotic experience you don't want to miss!
Even 1 rated airline land plane smoother than ryanair airline
Lol
they have to, can't put much stress on that plane, not as many spare parts as ryanair has access to
tbf considering how many tu-154s are still in service in military airlines like the plaaf and russian air force there might be good maintenance for those, idk about the ilyushin tho
Agree
Haha don't forget easy jet lol
That MiG-21 landing, tho... I was expecting the main landing gears to snap.
Then the nose
I’m sure the tail striked as well
Smackdown and a tailstrike. It's great that North Korea allowed these ladies to fly planes, hopefully they received more training before flying again.
And the commentary is about women flying just at that moment :D
Aokwawokawok
"It feels like turning 50 years back in time there" made me lmao
8:48 They could organize and host such an event for the first time just by watching the dvds? Wow
You must admit Air Koryo does take good care of their old planes .
A very very good care
Well...you kinda have too.
When your under heavy sanctions, and not allowed to purchase new 21st century toys. You gotta make do with what you have. 💁♂️
@@jackiechan_wtf4041 Well, don't also think they could afford it, Chinese and Russian could supply but think NK could not pay
@@c.o.y9418 True, but they are Asian. When Qaddafi made again relation to the West, there was French asked to look at Libyan Mirage planes to refurbish it. They told, from all the planes two could be refurbished, the rest is scrap due bad maintenance
@@manjelos they could most definitely afford new airplanes if sanctions weren’t in place
Have to say it's interesting seeing those old planes still flying today.
@@umarplanes but they still use those planes
@@captaintzuyu That's right

Only in n korea
Well the reason why north KOREA doesent buy other countries from other plane is it because it only uses soviet planes and a communisim country. Which is popular aircraft in N.K so they had to buy every soviet aircrafts
Tu-134... the very first plane I've ever flown on... it was an Aeroflot fight from Minsk to Simpheropol back in 1979, and I was only 6yo but I still remember that flight! We had quad seats, 2x2 facing each other. I've been fascinated with planes ever since that day! Having flown close to 3 million miles since then... Thank you for bringing back the memories, Sam!
also the first plane I ever flown on was an a310, it was a miracle engineering
So you must be born at Soviet era
@teio748 Yes, I was born in USSR.
@@Vlad6525 wow nice
A large group of aviation enthusiasts landed at Wonsan the year before this airshow took place and the reason for building the airport was that the North Koreans have plans to make the region a tourist zone. It wasn't built specifically for the air show, in fact it was previously a military base and still operates as such...

ok
Few civilians can say that they have flown on a IL-76. Fewer people still can say they flown in a Air Koryo IL-76.
Thanks a lot for sharing this unique experience. 😊
Anybody can book this tour tho and I can recommend it. Sadly you can only see what they wants you to see in North Korea but its still worth it
I'm one of them!
I can !
Great video. As an American coming to Vietnam since the 1980s and now living here for nearly 30 years I can say that I have travelled on quite a few of those planes specifically the TU154 many times flying domestically in the 1980s and 1990s, my favorite being an IL62 flying from Montreal to Moscow to Bombay to Hanoi then to Ho Chi Minh City and back in 1990 when Russia was still the Soviet Union, an IL18 from Manila to HCMC in 1989, and various times flying on board AN helicopters on work assignments. Always fascinated by those experiences!!

IL62 a nice passenger killer.
You like Vietnam, eh, comrade?

It's amazing to see these old planes still flying, but it makes me wonder how they're keeping them in the air, since many of the components aren't made anymore.
The little bit of industrial capacity that the DPRK has is spent on keeping the military and other strategic assets going. Wouldn’t be surprised if they’re manufacturing their own components for these aircraft.
With the relationship between China and Russia that NK has I wouldn’t be surprised if they get components and parts made when needed. Obviously the Russian Federation keeps all Soviet designs and documents handy. There’s lots of these planes in boneyards to pick from too I’m sure
154 isn't allowed to fly in other places than marxist north korea anymore.

Tourist: How was the airshow?
North Korean: Can't complain.
Tourist: Oh wow!
North Korean: No, really! I can't complain.
I have no doubt all the citizens involved at the airport were debriefed by authorities. Nothing like state-controlled social theater.
i do not know if im going to hell for laughing my ass off at this XD
Like the similar hats…reminds me of a few political parties we have minus the forced silly clapping. MAGA OF 2016 AND VAGINA OF 2016.
The real Truman Show
Can't complain! Remember, indiscriminate cowardly aerial bombing over cities and towns in Korean war wiped out 20% of the innocent civilian population in North Korea.
Moreover, century-old bullied practices of Capitalist Imperialist Western Sanctions over other nations throughout the whole wide world, (including in N. Korea, where Western sanctions caused over a million innocent N. Koreans deaths in famine/starvation in the past) are nothing more than "Economic Terrorism"; plain and simple. 🤔

Amazing footage. Unbelievable experience flying on those antique aircrafts which you can't see anywhere else thoughout the world. I, myself however had flown on AN24, IL18, Tu134, Tu154 and IL86 in early 1980s, almost half a century ago
Politics aside one must admit, the North Koreans are extremely well calculated and detail oriented in their approach to everything. I always admire them for this even under the immense social pressure by their government.
That's exactly due to, as you have mentioned, the immense social pressure. If my memory is correct, a NK military officer got excecuted simply because he violated the COVID-management regulations
I'd be detailed oriented too if one simple mistake meant my life or a member of my family.
You do realize that's something that is pressed on the people by the government right? And they must do it with a smile or be imprisoned and taken away from their family or worse sadly 😥 😔
Since I’m from china. I’d say the Chinese would have played a big part in helping.

I was shocked when I heard the noise at 2:58 . There is a Tupolev 154 which I fly in FSX, and the starting sound is exactly the same! I was so amazed to hear that it's just the same as in real

Oh, just wonderful, shame there's no more. I spent a year working down in Farnborough, 'on loan' from London, back in 1992. It was the first year the Soviets were not the Soviets and they let us walk around their area and look at all their planes. One of the pilots gave me his flight badge, it had the red star and SU something, I kept it for years but I think I've lost it now. Such a different era.

It's really impressive as one of the person watching from 'S.Korea'.
I flew many times on the old Soviet plane 154, when i was stationed in Pyongyang in the year 2000 (from the old airport that time) and flying to Beijing (2 hrs flight), which is featured in second fragment in this movie. During turbulence baggage fell off the open luggage cabins by times. During that time service was also impeccable. Flight always took off exactly at 09.00 am (they had that time only 2 flight per week from Pyongyang to Beijing) good food was served during this short flight. Very friendly crew. I am happy to see good progress over the years inside North Korea, especially the more new modern planes are impressive for them. 20 years ago it was pretty closed society especially for Foreigners living there due to job assignments. North Korea always had great shows and great artist which i attended with pleasure. I wish this nation the best. Manzee!
I’ll be real.. seeing these older planes still flying is amazing
I have the 1/200 Il-62 (Reg. P-885) model . It was great to see the exact 1:1 version of my model in action! Thanks
So many well cared soviet planes in one place for one unique experience is a kind of privilege. Even if the strong language barrier does not help, there is a possibility to mingle with North Korean people.
Thank you to the North Korean authorities for this wonderful show 👏!

These are some of the most unique aircraft my eyes have ever seen. The Ilyushin Il-76 looks very similar to the Antonov an-22 aircraft.
P.S.- I love the Barbie doll house too
🤣😁
Really? I don't see a resemblance at all between the two planes other than they're cargo and have high mounted wings.
@@tonyroberts4807 correction I would say this aircraft looks more like the Antonov an-124 cargo. I am a novice aviation geek, but I feel like most of these Antonov series aircraft look the same.
Check the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter. You'll see the inspiration for the Il-76. The Soviets would study American designs and then fix the problems that would come up during test and operations. So aircraft like the Il-76 and An-124 would be real improvements over the American planes that inspired them. Welcome to Av Geekery, hope to see you on the flightline one day.

I loved how the citizens were well scripted from the beginning to the end of the show. Just a normal showcase of power by the regime!
Your comment says a lot about you.
@@kidspalace2803 ?
@@kidspalace2803 I'm sorry to say that their comment says more about how it actually is in North Korea. Most of the country is malnourished to the point that their average height is several inches shorter than their South Korean brothers and sisters. Military service compulsory among all citizens for a minimum 10 year stint. The whole country is deprived of the needed electricity to provide for basic necessities that we take for granted in the west. It's so bad they need to do rolling black and brown outs on a regular basis. Just Google on black outs in North Korea. You can bring up a satellite photo of the region that shows a stark visual of how bad it is when you see China, Japan and South Korea brightly lit compared to seeing a mostly black North Korea.
So, when you say it says more about the person who observed that the North Koreans were carefully scripted in their behavior you demostrate how ignorant you are of the realities of life in North Korea. The North Koreans who attended that "air show" were favored citizens who lived priveleged lives in North Korea, not the average citizen.
After listening to Sams comments and high praise for North Korea I was not a little dubious. But when he was all atwitter at how organized they were walking back to wherever after the show I knew then that we wouldn't be getting an honest appraisal. I mean he slept in a barren room with three beds that were meant for little people and he was good with that? Really!? Now, if he was still in North Korea when he filed that "report", OK, I understand that. It's tough to be honest when you're in a totalitarian country. But, if he posted this story after he left N. Korea, then I think there's a problem.
Other than that, GREAT POST! You're right. Aviation does bring people together. I bet soon we'll see N. Korea embrace the worldwide community in friendship and brotherhood. It gives me the chills just thinking about it.
@ David Scott, does this explain why you're fat and chubby because you spent all your life eating junk food and watching netflix? Give credit to the North Koreans, they're resilient despite the sanctions imposed on them by the western cronies. They will never be fat because they work hard and eat clean. If it wasn't for the sanctions. North Korea would be more developed than most of the Western world

Flown many times on Air Koryo, including flights on the Antonov AN-148 and Tupolev TU-204. The SkyTrax rating of 1 star is very misleading as the ratings take into consideration auxiliary products such as Frequest Flyer Programs and number of destinations flown to.
