    The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the world's fastest quarter mile production car. But how does it do that? How does it hit 1.8 g's of acceleration when powered by only the rear wheels? Rear wheel drive!? Physics tells us that the maximum force a wheel can apply to the ground is equal to the normal force acting on the tire multiplied by the frictional coefficient of the tire (F=u*N). So the car needs to be able to transfer all the weight to the rear tires, and have super stick tires. This video explains how the vehicle does just that!
    IMPORTANT CORRECTION! The 2.3 second 0-60 time is indeed from 0 mph, not after 1 ft of rollout. This is faster than the Tesla P100D to 30 mph (incorrectly stated in video). My apologies for the confusion. When I asked Dodge PR directly about the car, they told me this: ""The Demon 0-30, 0-60 and 0-100 times do NOT include the 1 ft of roll out." I interpreted this as the times did not include the time for 1 foot of rollout, however from Detroit News: "Roll-outs aren’t a fair way to do zero-60, honestly. A real zero-60 is from a dead stop. But we included (a roll-out) anyway because we knew that question would come up,” said Kuniskis in the Big Apple. “You include roll-outs in our times and it’s 2.1 seconds.”
    From The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Press Release:
    "- 840 horsepower and 770 pounds-feet of torque from supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® Demon V-8 engine makes Dodge Challenger SRT Demon the most-powerful muscle car ever

    - Challenger SRT Demon is too fast for the drag strip - officially banned by NHRA
    - World’s fastest 0-60 production car: 2.3 seconds
    - 0-30 miles per hour: 1.0 second
    - Highest g-force acceleration of any production car: 1.8 g
    - Air-Grabber™ induction system includes the largest functional hood scoop (45.2 square inches) of any production car

    - First factory-production car with After-Run Chiller that keeps cooling the supercharger/charge air cooler after the engine is shut off
    - First-ever, factory-production car designed to run on 100+ high-octane unleaded fuel or 91 octane on demand
    - First-ever, factory-production car with TransBrake for more powerful and quicker launches
    - First-ever, factory-production drag car with Torque Reserve, to deliver increased levels of power and torque at launch
    - First-ever, factory-production car with front passenger seat delete
    - Exclusive, serialized Demon Crate offers components that fully unleash the car’s potential at the drag strip
    - Challenger SRT Demon is covered by FCA US LLC factory warranty, including three-year/36,000-mile limited vehicle warranty and five-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage
    - Production of limited-edition single model year (3,000 United States/300 Canada) Challenger SRT Demon begins later this summer; deliveries to Dodge//SRT dealers to begin this fall
    - All customers who buy the new 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon receive one full-day session at Bob Bondurant School of High-performance Driving."

      Crazy to see just how much thought and engineering went into producing this car but I feel like these engineers were allowed to bring out their inner selves and develop something strictly to impress "petrol heads" and not care about fuel consumption or any of that crap, good for them!!! 👍🏽👍🏽

      Engineering Explained Thanks for the correction, that makes these statistics much more impressive!
      We all know they made this car to claw back their street cred after having the hellcats butt handed to them by the Tesla, so I appreciate that they're throwing down the gauntlet once again, so having a good explaination of how they did it helps me to appreciate the Tesla more. That car is drivable every day and isn't a one trick show pony(car)

    Spot-on video my friend. As a former NHRA race driver who later went into engineering, I'd give you TWO thumbs up if I could!
    One thing people don't realize is that you design a suspension for drag, or for handling, or you compromise and find a balance. Dodge did not want to compromise the drag performance. If you want cornering, Dodge make other options.

      we get it, and as a drag car its great, its just to keep it in context that in "drag mode" takes a crate of stuff to prep it, using race gas etc.
      Its fast of course but compromised as a car to drive on the road.

    Dodge says the 2.3 0-60 time is without a rollout, with the rollout I believe the said it was 2.1

    • @EngineeringExplained
      @EngineeringExplained  7 лет назад +7

      I asked Dodge this directly; this is their response: "The Demon 0-30, 0-60 and 0-100 times do NOT include the 1 ft of roll out." As in, the actual 0-60 time is slower when you account for the initial 1 ft. The way they measured is the way all major auto magazines measure (and the NHRA, which makes sense in this scenario).

    • @jstout82
      @jstout82 7 лет назад +5

      I believe you interpreted them wrong. The 2.3 does not include a 1-foot rollout, meaning it's from a dead stop. With the 1-foot rollout, Dodge says it does it in 2.1 sec. The Tesla P100D is 2.27 sec with the 1-foot rollout, and 2.5 sec without it.

The sad thing is that on anything but a fully prepped race surface with warm tires the Tesla will still be faster to 60 id expect. Dodge should have specified the rollout with all their data, im really shocked they didn't say 2.1 since that is a much better number.

    Dodge builds a street legal car that runs the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds and people are comparing it to a modded Civic. no they really didn't, they cut corners. At least a modded civic that is hitting those times is built well as far as safety, this whole thing isn't nhra legal purely because it has NO safety it should, they tout 4 point harnesses like they are a good thing and then combine that with a non caged car? shows you what they really gave a damn aabout

      Considering the Demon has stronger components than the Hellcat both in the drive train and the rotating assembly. It shouldn't be an issue. Hennessy makes a 4.5L Whipple blower kit for the Hellcat that puts it at 1100 horsepower. The Demon with that kind of power would be a death trap on the street.

    Flat out they didn't just beat numbers by a little increment here whether your a dodge fan or not this is a cool accomplishment in modern automotive History. I'd rather be at a road course track with a car but seeing this as a production street car/drag car is interesting. I don't think it will be allowed to run at really any track though with out a cage first. I also feel many drag race fans will feel the owners of these are a sellout...Tesla will most likely easily beat this (if they choose to) in the next 1-3 years.

      Bradley Thompson actually it depends on the watchers and the makers understanding of English. If it wasn't for the white board his videos would be like watching an audible book. Not everything is easily explained with just talking and that is the reason for the cliche, a picture is worth a 1000 words.
      Try explaining the build, function, and motion path of parts in a Wankle engine to a non-gearhead some time. Then have them draw it based on their new understanding.

    • @rafetizer
      @rafetizer 7 лет назад

      Well then, perhaps the S hit the current limit for speed without more specialization. It's not like they just disregarded all prior knowledge on how to achieve speed. "Let's make a new Tesla, but whatever acceleration we end up with is what we get." No, they looked at how to make it perform in speed as well as whatever other categories they chose. Doesn't change the fact that this car beats it. I'll state right now that I couldn't care less about either the Tesla or the Challenger. They're both impressive. That said, how's second place feel? Must suck pretty bad if you're vicariously hurt by it enough to lash out.

    no one gives two shits what it does 0-60 thats so GAY! its will tank in value in 3 years and be worth $50k. its a fukn Challenger with a big blower and a fancy cooling system. buy a stock challenger and dump $25k into and smoke this car in every way. but that fact that it weighs as much as my Truck does I will pass and wait for an actual DRAG CAR that doesn't weigh 4200 fukn lbs are u kidding me smh

      Well, you showed Dodge there, didn't you! I'll bet they're already correcting their future plans based upon your comment.

      My 2013 Turbo Mustang GT Auto is completely street legal and passes emissions with no problems at all..... and goes low 9's at 148 mph and I didn't spend $100k building it and it doesn't weigh as much as my other vehicle which is a TRUCK!
      It comes in at 3650 lbs. Throw 19 in inch F14's on it with NTO5r and it carves corners better then a 2016 Dodge Charger which I drive at work and still hooks good on the street as long as I turn the boost down to around 10 lbs. Its a 76/87 T6 from forced Inductions.
      Throw on 15x10 DR's and I go low 9's and still drive them around too but I got MT Pro Radials and at higher hi-way speeds their obviously not as stable at the 19's but still handles fine cause I got 17's up front.

    Really enjoy your videos. Your mathematics abilities -- combined with your ability to transform highly complex data into engaging, digestible explanations -- is astounding. I share the same ability (minus your level of engineering acumen!). Very rare talent, man! Really impressive. Please keep these coming ... always an informative and very fun watch!

    Your drawing was very accurate, you should be proud! So basically it hits 1.8g's when all that weight transfers to the rear, then stabilizes and levels out. That must be one hell of a kick!
