RetroFlag GPi Case Software Set Up Guide - Safe Shutdown - Screen & Buttons

- Putting this out a bit early but I want to make sure everyone is ready when they receive their unit from RetroFlag.
In this video, I show you how to set up your SD card to work with the all-new RetroFlag GPi Case.
This involves installing RetroPie or Recalbox installing the screen and button.Bat file and then installing the Safe Shut down Script all provided by RetroFlag.

I looked into the issue you mentioned about the banana pi m2 zero not working with this case, looks like the gpio pinout is different, we would need to rewrite the gpio map files.
It seems I was wrong, other banana products are different, but it seems they uses the pi wiring spec for the m2 zero.
I'm growing more and more convinced that ETA Prime is my spirit animal.

I can't thank you enough for this video. It is absolutely impossible to find concise information for someone that is new to this stuff. I'm not an idiot, but instructions like those from Retroflag that say things like "transfer roms via SSH, install safe shutdown and you're done" didn't get me far. Cheers!

I just finished going though this with my 10year old nephew. He's really been wanting to get into raspberry pi stuff, and really wanted a handheld thingy. This was perfect but I knew there would still be a large curve for the dude. Then I found your video while researching good handhelds for the zero this sold it for me! Tonight my nephew and I put it all together and got it running thanks to you and your direction! Thank you for making my ten year old nephew a real happy dude, And he learned something in the process! Win win for Uncle Cody that's for sure! If you follow your steps exactly on a Windows 10 computer it works flawlessly! It's cool to be smart! Keep on keepin!

Thank you for the videos for information and updates (along with all of your videos). I am anxiously awaiting for the GPi case to go on sale (again) on Amazon. I had been searching "Retroflag GPi" case on Amazon for weeks now with no results until I used your link in this video and found it. I am not certain if the Amazon database takes time to update (like DNS) or if they have yet to enter in search terms of "retroflag gpi" into their item search database.

Really hope retroflag makes a gameboy advance design. I like my replaytech cm3, but modding a gba case can be tedious
Any help for a Mac user coming? I set my other RetroPie up using a keyboard and the Ssh setup is proving to be difficult. It won't connect to the Pi using the IP that was displayed on the Pi. Thanks

Hi, nice and good tutorial.
I did installed retropie and wifi, everything works, my question is now i can safely just turn off the handheld with the power button? it will shutdown completly? or first i need to go select -> shutdown and then push the button?
Thanks for a great video. I am running retropie 4.6 Buster.issue with shutting down. All installed as explained in the video used the latest links on the retroflag site and the switch is set to on in the battery compartment. However the safe shutdown script process doesn't appear to work as in the video. Any advice.

I think the only way to use SSH on the Pi Zero is with adapter(s):
- MicroUSB ---> Ethernet
- MicroUSB --(OTG cable)--> USB --> Ethernet
- MicroUSB --(OTG cable)--> USB --> USB Wi-fi dongle/stick

Hello, I have installed a few MAME games but i can’t add coins to play. I also tried the hot key select + start to return to the game selection screen but it’s not working. What can I do?
Question I have used the ETA Eta Prime Retroflag GPi Case software video to install my safeshut down and reset and the use of by buttons and sound. When it did a restart after in install of the safe shutdown it started scrolling "checking in progress on 1 disk" then at the bottom says 100%. Now it just stopped and not restarted or anything. The video did not say anything about that. Need help.

Thank you for the tutorial. Every time I restart after installing the safe shutdown script on Retropie 4.4 the pi does into a checking in progress on 1 disk and always leaves me in emergency mode. I have tried to re flash my SD and it continues. Any advice?

@ETA what happened if you want to install Recalbox? Do you follow the same steps. I think you mentioned it at the end of video, but just want to double check. Great work by the way.
I installed Recalbox, didn't work so well.... Super Mario World was slow...

Thank again for all the great tutorials on retro gaming. I been trying to follow this video for the Retroflag GPi CASE and keep running into an issue. First the safe shutdown part through PuTTY got stick near the end before losing connection to the pizerow. So I tried it again a few times and after the shutdown does go through I get to a screen on the GPi CASE that I am in emergency mode and it cannot open access to console, the root account is locked. It doesn't go any further than that. What does this mean? I'm new to raspberry pi and retropie.
Hey man, do you also got an idea how to Config the Raspbeey Pi Zero v 1.3, i still got the older one and i m not sure were i can get the data for the "safe shut down" because this pie dont got wifi or bluetooth and for the config you use to get the buttons runnig, it is working but when it comes to the point were you have to calibrate the buttons i always got problems in the end because in the end there always three buttons left and i can´t end or skip this part

I downloaded and filled out the WIFI config file with Notepad++ correctly and put the file on the root of my sd card. I followed all of your directions but can't get my Retropie to show an IP address to use in Putty to install the safe shutdown script. Any ideas of what I need to do to get this to work?
Hey ETA PRIME, i noticed that there's a micro usb connection, right under the battery pack notch. What is that? Is that another way to power the device? Or is it for future firmware updates?
I missed the two limited lightning quick Amazon sales of this Retroflag GPi case. I thought the official release date of this case was June 15th. I contacted Retroflag this Friday to ask when the GPi case would be back in stock and I was told “mid to end of July”. With no issues reported by anyone regarding the case I am curious to know if there was a production holdup as this is to artificially drive sales (similar to the NES classic/mini.

After writing the retropie image to the SD card, I can not open the SD card in order to see the extracted files. The system says it “does not recognize the file system”. I’ve done this multiple times now. How can I resolve this?
if I messed the button configuration at the start, how to I reset them? I didnt know about the two buttons at the back of the case and I didnt set them, therefor they dont work.
would it be easier to just install all the scripts before you put the pi in the case cause I've never been able to connect via ssh for whatever reason.

I posted this in a reply below but wanted it not to get lost. If you run into the problem where you followed ETA's instructions correctly but when you reboot your Retroflag GPi case and it gets stuck on the checking disk part in the boot up then here's the fix.
1. Reflash retroie to the re-formatted sd card
2. Use the usb power cord versus batteries, makes accessing the shut down switch easier for the next parts.
3. Follow ETA's instructions but leave out turning on the safe shut down switch in the batter compartment or the installing the safe shutdown script part.
4. Turn on system and set up your controls in retropie as normal.
5. Go into the retropie configuration menu and set your timezone. *This is the issue, mine was defaulted to GMT* For some reason the safe shutdown script didn't like this causing the check disk part.
6. Safely shutdown retropie from the retropie quit menu. Wait a few second for it to completely shut down and the screen to fade away. Mine took about 15-20 seconds. Then turn the power off.
7. Turn the Retroflap GPi case back on. It should boot up normally into retropie.
8. With the unit on turn on the safe shutdown switch in the battery compartment.
9. Continue ETA's instructions on installing the safe shutdown script and let the unit auto shut down.
10. Turn the unit back on and all should be good to go now, no more check disk issue.
This is what I had to do and it worked after trying to redo all the instructions all weekend.
You can also "fix it" by downloading the 4.3 version of Retropie
so if I wish to use the wifi of a different source ill have to change this again? or can I create multiple wifi config files so if im tethering on my phone it will look for that when out... or my home wifi while at home? or even my mother in laws wifi if I am there? thanks.

you can also create a blank file named "ssh" in the root of your boot partition and ssh will be activated on first boot.
Do u have any ideas why mine gets stuck on the checking screen that runs after a restart. After I restart, after seting up the safe shutdown(following your steps) it checks to 100% then stays on that srceen. I am using a 64gb sd card, does that matter at all? Also I did just setup my friend with a 32gb sd card with absolutly no problems.
the steps were amazing but the the Wifi part was lacking. I went to that drop box was saying i couldnt download the file. Can you explain the other method of doing thids

I formatted 256GB SD Card using Etcher and it is now saying I only have 59.6MB. I reformatted it using SD Formatter and it gave me correct size. But when I use Etcher to put the Retropie Image on the SD Card is lowers the size back to 59.6MB. What am I doing wrong?
Why is your config file different than from what the Retropie website suggests? You have one line missing and have end command and start commands in it...
I was wondering what options this setup has for video output, can you still connect to a TV or monitor in this case? I don't mind cutting out an HDMI port if I have to, but does the configuration allow connecting to a TV once in a while?
From the install files that they've included...Probably not. Maybe there's a setting you can change afterwards..
