Yes! I’ve learned a lot as a self employed fashion designer. Starting my own brand with a very small bugdet, doing everything myself. I hope it will be a nice experience to add to my resume because I never had a job nor internship and I plan to move to the US, I hope to get a job in the industry.

Hi Zoe ......I live in Nigeria and I have been following your channel for the past three years. I have been working actively in fashion since 2014 and I have worked across various creative capacities but one constant thing I have done across all brands is pattern-cutting. I really really do love to draft patterns and I have been considering going to get an MA in pattern cutting for a while now but I'm so unsure cause overhere in Nigeria, nobody really thinks pattern cutters are important. Our industry is sooo small. I'd love to also teach it. But I also feel that I'd be sooo limited creatively especially with creatively exploring pattern-cutting......I'm not even sure what I'm texting about but I wish I knew how best to pivot

      Hiii! Ebuka.
      I'm from Nigeria too!
      The western part!
      I love Zoe videos too!
Basically, I major on fashion illustration, sewing and about to start writing all I discover in the industry. I don't know what I want to do in the fashion world as yet but I know I want this.
I want to be in the industry. Want to go to school and earn my degree.
As you said, Nigeria don't think so high of fashion designers.
      It's so disheartening.

I’m currently studying Fashion Design at University in Adelaide. By far, you are the best teacher I have every had. You are clear and thorough in your teaching and this makes learning so much easier. My drawing has improved so much over the last 2 weeks of watching your channel. With every video, I’ve learned at least one if not more new things. Thank you! You have made matters so much clearer for me in class now. ❤️

Another great episode. I didn't know you used an iPhone. It looks very clear. We were taught in film school that having good sound quality is arguably even more important when it comes to presenting a polished and professional project. Bad sound immediately cheapens the work and makes it read as amateur. Reducing the barrier to entry when creating is key. Use what you have and go from there. Camera tech has improved so much. The audience footage from Beyonce's Renaissance tour is so clear! A video on the tour costumes and original runway looks would be cool.

Really dislike family owned small businesses or small businesses with no formality. They want you to be formal and expect a lot from you without saying or explaining what they want you to do.

What our reachers mention in F.i.p is take internships with designers learn extra from them and their staff they highly advice if one has a relative whos a designer thats best plus a good resume . In the philippines yes headshots and details with portfolio with experiences, think i got haunted not to do wedding services due to experiencing a Karen mother of the bride, the bride is kind and we felt bad for her how her mom is crazy haha. Keep ranting about the unpaid internships because the college I went to would offer internships to fashion students to work behind the scenes for fashion shows on the weekend and guess what broke college kid worked on the weekends and 2 other days throughout the week?...Me! Needless to say I was never able to do those internships.

  • @JaciHirschi

Unpaid internships are an issue in every industry not just fashion. I’m not even studying fashion but I am studying entrepreneurship and social media marketing. Companies want you to have experience in order to hire and pay you. So then you look at internships to get you some real world experience, and most are unpaid. It the worst.

Kent State - 0 help, 0 assistance unless you want to intern at Davids Bridal. I found my internship by finding a designer's outfit I liked in a magazine, finding her email, and ended up in Brooklyn for a summer. It was a cool experience, but I would have preferred leads on bigger fashion companies. Unfortunately, the faculty/staff at Kent at the time simply did not have those connections. They've improved since I was there, so I hope they got better with that for current students.

The unpaid internship comments... FOR REALS!

  • @thefashionalchemist
    @thefashionalchemist Год назад +1

Don’t get me started on unpaid internships 😭!!! I did two during my placement year at Uni, one reimbursed travel and the other didn’t, totally unpaid. The brands weren’t massive, but they were part of the London and Paris fashion weeks. I remember one time the designer was asking the production employee to make sure she books him a business class flight to Korea 🫣. Internally I felt rage lol like you’re really out here concerned about your business flight and showing us your Dior lip balm 😳 whilst there’s a bunch of us interns here who aren’t paid and we’re worked just like paid employees smh🤦🏻‍♀️. Looking back now, it is a funny memory lol, but the whole internship experience actually made me realise I don’t want to work in a design studio. The pay is low for the work you do, and the standards for their workers are low too. You’re overworked most of the time and paid less than minimum wage 😳. I was lucky enough to have my parents just about afford to help me out during Uni, but a lot of the interns I met were international and these guys had access to money. I recently discovered in the tv and film industry, the internships or work experience you do have to be paid. I get why, cos the producers of that show/film are liable for any misconduct which fashion doesn’t have. No one is held responsible in fashion especially the production part because almost everything is outsourced. And the regulations just don’t exist 🫢. This is how slave labour exists and it becomes acceptable within the industry. It shouldn’t be, but it is, and if you look there’s still a lot of unpaid internships out here. I know legally in the UK, if you need to do an internship as part of your degree or course, they aren’t obligated to pay you - but this doesn’t mean they shouldn’t. If you’ve ever noticed, fashion internships mostly require you to be a student because they know they can get away without paying you… so trying to do an internship after you graduate isn’t likely and you shouldn’t be doing anything unpaid, unless it’s voluntary work ofc.
Other industries will pay these internships anyway, but fashion doesn’t and it angers me tbh. Fashion interns are out here slaving for experience and to top it off, there’s no job security after it. Even if you apply for junior/entry level roles there is still some level of experience you need to be employed 🤷🏻‍♀️.
This was a good podcast, thanks for opening up that topic!
