      Hans Christian Andersen is said to be a panromantic ace. He apparently wrote the little mermaid to describe how he felt for a man but couldn't be together just like how the mermaid couldn't be with her prince. Yeah it wasn't a happy ending in the original story. Don't let Disney fool you.

      You think he was killed in a lover's quarrel? I find his death suspicious as well, His killer was known to have a strong moral compass, I think he found out a terrible secret that Hamilton kept and felt he had no choice but to kill him... A lovers quarrel is probably not enough of a reason for someone with strong morals to kill a friend.

    @Barnesi94 2 года назад +9

    You point out that he doesn't like labels 2:50 but then call him queer 0:27? You even note that queer is a label on your animation.
    Don't get me wrong, this is a nice project, it's nice to learn about non-straight/cis/white history but I think its important to respect peoples choice of/choice not to have a label. You can just say he's not straight rather than label him queer. Many people, especially of the older generations, do not like to use that term and I think it's a bit presumptuous to assume that he would identify as queer if he were alive today.

    • @Caboose575
      @Caboose575 2 года назад +5

      Wouldn't "not-straight" be a label too?

    • @Barnesi94
      @Barnesi94 2 года назад +1

      @@Caboose575 Well 'not straight' wouldn't be a label, it would be 'non-straight' if you were to use the semantics correctly. Like 'non-binary'. The semantics matter. For example above I'm saying that he's not straight (rejecting the label straight), I'm not saying he's a 'not-straight' (use of label). Rejecting one box doesn't automatically put you in another, language is abstract.

    • @Caboose575
      @Caboose575 2 года назад +2

      @@Barnesi94 But it does. Changing the word from non to not doesn't change the fact you're labeling. "Labels" are just adjectives. No matter what you do, you will always be described in some matter. And people who wish not to be labeled become labeled as people that don't like labels. Pretty ironic, actually.

    • @Barnesi94
      @Barnesi94 2 года назад

      @@Caboose575 You're talking about Russell's paradox (the label labels all that do not label themselves). It's an interesting theory. I'd argue that you're oversimplifying classification theory by calling labels 'just adjectives' though (although I understand your reasoning behind it, given that the entire human obsession with classifying everything is based on our innate need to simply things in order to understand them I guess thats fitting).
      Regardless, in the context of this video I still believe that stating that someone does not identify as straight is not the same as calling them queer when it comes to applying labels.

    I'm a queer black woman who discovered James Baldwin in college. During my freshman year, I was far from home, a bit lonely, and spent a lot of time in the university library. I discovered James Baldwin completely by chance an d felt mostly elated--but also angry. Why wasn't he ever mentioned in school? HOW could they leave him out of the curriculum? I read it alllll. This series honestly seems like a great way for people to be recognized for their great works even through hard battles in society. People talk about history like that for people who are straight.
      If you have an issue with “gay stuff” then just don’t click on it. It doesn’t hurt anyone to tell those who are queer that they are accepted.

      I never said we should only focus on sexuality. I mentioned that it was a good way for people in the queer community to connect with someone who has great accomplishments. The video focuses a lot on the person’s achievements and celebrates mainly that. The sexuality of the person is a part of them and shouldn’t be overlooked. How much it should be focused on differs from person to person but we don’t see the video and only see the person as “oh, this person was queer.” We see the video and it’s “he accomplished many feats and we was also queer.” It’s about him as a person, but just his sexuality.
      And it definitely is something to be mindful of. I agree we look at people’s actions, not just sexuality, but queer people have been seen as inferior and having someone to look up to is not a bad thing, in my opinion.
      Now, for the label thing. I’m a bit confused why this is related to a comment that is about “I see too much stuff on gay people” and my response is “hey, I think it’s fine, avoid it if you don’t like it.”
      If this is an issue about the LGBT+ community, then there will be people who like labels and other don’t. Certain people will label people when they don’t want to be labeled and that’s them, does it mean the community is all full of these people? Does it mean we should speak about queer people less? No. Every community has people who are different and hypocritical in your opinion.
      If this is connected to the video having people labeled and certain people don’t like it, then it honestly could just be differing opinions that the community can honestly work on. But, once again, it doesn’t talking about make queer people less valid.
      For the school club thing. Students are diverse because they are people and having a place where people can meet others like them and thrive can be great (my opinion, once again). Especially in a time where some groups of people are in a worse place than others. It might not be the end-all solution to true diversity, but it can help those who need it. It can help people of that group see they’re not alone and that they’re not inferior or such.
      There’s a lot of people out in the world and having a group could bring to spotlight people who are talented but are overlooked because of the fact they are a minority.
