    The thing about the run blocking and O-line in general, the Texans last year had the most injuries to the O-line in the history of the NFL, as long as they've been tracking injuries. I'm fairly sure, there was not a single week where we had all our starters for the entirety of the game. We came in to the season with multiple O-line injuries, and by week 2 we had to pull guys off the street to start for us.

      @@mroverdose14 According to AGL, Texans Oline had an AGL of 82.1 last year. Which is over 10(!) more than 2nd highest in the past 20 years.
      Houston had the most injuries to their offense and had 4th most to their defense - giving them the highest AGL overall by a massive margin. And the highest overall AGL since they've been tracking total injury games lost.
      Miami ranked 8th overall last year in offensive injuries.

    In the clip from the Colts game, #70 at left guard is Tytus Howard. He is the starting right tackle. The right tackle, #67, is Charlie Heck, swing tackle and third on the depth chart. # 63, center Michael Dieter was brought in to replace Jarret Patterson, the rookie (intended left guard backup) who started because of Scruggs injury, who was slated to start due to veteran Quessenberry's injury.

    The offensive line was a hodgepodge due to inury. The slated center never saw the field. His replacement got injured as well. After several weeks and several injuries at left guard, the slated right tackle came back from injury and played in that spot. There was even a game with a practice squad player at right tackle. It was a nightmare. Only one offensive lineman played every game, left guard Shaq Mason, a veteran brought into Houston via free agency. One other note: both of Houston's starting tackles are excellent pass blockers, but average at best as run blockers. That could be because the Texans haven't had a premier running back since Arian Foster, so the o-line hasn't been coached diligently in that phase or maybe they're just not talented in it. The player who was meant to be left guard is a good run blocker, but injured a lot in the year he was drafted, and missed his entire second season.

    Run blocking was atrocious most of the year + the high probability of Slowik calling a run play on 1st down. Schultz became a slightly better blocker later in the season for whatever reason. When we hit the blocks, run game was decent. Majority of the time though, plenty of missed blocks usually by non-linemen or no push by the line, leading to TFL or getting stuffed at the line. In some instances, Slowik also tried way too hard to establish run game even if it wasn't working, putting the team in some tough situations.
    Clip 12: Looking at your analysis, you're probably correct. Stroud has talked a number of times about him and Tank scheming during games.
    100% agreed that Stroud will usually play the open man or the guy he trusts, going for the base hits instead of home runs. In the very beginning of the season, he said it's about taking care of the ball, and that statement carried throughout the season. That said, it's also probably the fluid motion and the ball he throws that tricks the eyes. You think he's consistently throwing under 10 yards to open guys. No, he's zipping it 15-20 yards to an open receiver because he has great anticipation on top of the other factors. Because of the bad run game, Stroud had to consistently, just about every game, convert on like 3rd and 13+. It's actually funny because Texans struggled heavily on 3rd and short (like 3 yards and under), but you give the ball to Stroud on 3rd and 15, it's like 85% chance it's a 1st down.

      Base hits instead of home runs is an elite way of putting it. Was very clear the struggles in run blocking. Having watched both the Packers and the Lions this past two weeks, the difference was staggering!

    9:14 This is a zone running scheme, so the majority of the run plays are meant to be cut back. They get the defense flowing one way, and then someone seals the back side so the running back can either stay front side or cut back.

    Cover 1 robber
    They start in a high 2 shell to give the pre snap indicator that the middle of field is open and then they rotate the safety to a robber role to try and force a turnover. Pretty simple rotation for a NFL defense but they playing a rookie and you just trying to mix up the looks he see.
    I wouldn't play it like that but rather move the slot to the robber role and have my safety come down and play it with a backer flowing in to the hook/curl zone. This will eat any in breakers but it does give up free access to speed outs and putting the backside corner in a tough situation if he isn't elite (Houston had three very good receivers imo)

    Watching how he throws off the edges of his feet makes me think of Aaron Rodgers & I wonder about that being intentional. Rodgers gets power on his throws launching them that way. Stroud may be what Rodgers could'a should'a would'a been had he gotten better support early in his career.

  • @danielvandusen5724

    One more reason, and possibly the most important reason why Stroud throws the ball where the receiver has to go to the ground to catch it is because he's trying to protect his receivers from a "hospital pass."
    I think that's what it's called in rugby. But he's trying to throw it so his receiver doesn't get murdered by a defensive player when he catches the ball.

    Robert Woods had stepped out of the back of the end zone earlier on the other side of the field according to the ref. There was no conclusive camera angle, but the ref had thrown the flag immediately, so his foot must have just landed on the chalk. Once a player has gone out of bounds, he's not allowed to be the first to touch the ball thereafter.

    Youve earned a sub. Texans fan and your observations are spot on... Cj has the pocket awareness of a damn airport radar and it was the first thing i noticed and no one ever says it. His pass placement rarely ever put his passes or recievers in danger and tank dell getting hurt was a freak accident and our offense struggled after that... In the game they cut to cj and dell after the missed connection or maybe another similar play and hes explaining to him about spatial awareness and where he meant to throw it then they shake it off and keep it moving. There gonna do so much together... With the run game our second level blocking was so inconsistent that damian peirce our 2nd year premier back struggled in the new scheam and Singletary earned his contract with his new team!

    When Dell got his kidney put in a blender, he'd cut off his route too soon. Whether that was the route he'd been coached to run, we don't know. But if he'd continued one more step forward rather than turning left, the ball would have been on his numbers rather than over his head and a bit behind. CJ has deep concern for his teammates, from keeping them healthy to helping them be at their best so that, in his words, they can feed their families. That concern is one of the things that makes his placement great. The only time I've seen him misstep was on that throw to Dell that ended with Dell concussed. The ball was too low and Tank went down and landed on his head after catching it.

    • @AlexandtheNFL
      @AlexandtheNFL  4 месяца назад

      Yeah that is certainly obvious in the way he plays. He doesn’t ever lead his receivers into trouble, so that one with Tank was an outlier. Like we both said though, it wasn’t on Stroud!

    • @mroverdose14
      @mroverdose14 4 месяца назад +9

      Being wide open doesn't change the throw...... A good throw is a good throw.
      Why do fans believe that this changes anything for a QB other than limit the placement options. If the ball is in a placement option that even if covered would be perfect...... Why are you holding that against the QB?

    • @josecaride512
      @josecaride512 4 месяца назад

      @@mroverdose14 You are getting it wrong. I am not saying that it's a Bad throw. What I am saying it's that he exagerates the balls placement because the reciever had no one within at least 10 yards. Obviously the ability to navigate through the Mess and still manage to find the reciever is amazing, But i honestly think that any good quarterback could have made that pass, i think stroud has other plays that show it's accuracy better.

    • @ChewsCarefully
      @ChewsCarefully 4 месяца назад +2

      @@mroverdose14 In my experience people say that very selectively. I've been on this streak of trying to point out what people missed about Justin fields because unlike other QBs attracting hate, his career has been affected by it. When he led the NFL in offense for three weeks straight people just shrugged & only said "this proves he can't win." And when I pointed out how accurate his passes are that even the INTs & incomplete passes hit his receivers in the hands, they *_DON'T_*_ say_ what you said here.
      They blame him for being unable to read defenses which explains why the receivers drop his passes not at all.

      @mroverdose14 4 месяца назад

      @@ChewsCarefully These are people who are bias and have little ability to see context. They're lazy and only look at the results. Now, I personally don't like fields. Inaccurate (NFL is about consistency) 3 isn't remotely close enough a sample size to define a player. He didn't see the field well enough and processed post snap progression to slowly. The scheme wasn't great but he didn't develop in areas of an NFL QB enough to consider him a starter at that level.
      Him and Hurts have some of the same limitations but Hurts has actively tried to improve those weakness.

    • @ChewsCarefully
      @ChewsCarefully 4 месяца назад

      @@mroverdose14 Well, you'd have to look closer & at the right times to see where that's not quite true. I mean he has been doing all those things. But he didn't _start_ doing them until '22. (The one time I don't write a novel about this someone makes points that require me to).
      1) If he was great even in college but not in the NFL one has to look at the play-calling. But as far as him not being able to scan the field, that's pure BS. You couldn't know this however unless you'd ever seen ruclips.net/video/QuhUbISnr8s/видео.html or *really examined* how Fields regressed especially in '23.
      Say what you will about being able to teach how to read defenses, but it isn't something you magically _unlearn. So the eye-test & stats prove he can. so why _didn't_ he?
      2) ruclips.net/video/FiiK21VzI_o/видео.html. Count how many defenders get through to Fields in just the half of this game shown in the 1st 23 minutes. As a bonus explain wtf is going on at 22.45.
      This isn't even all the times his o-line sabotages him in from of his eyes this game nor the only game they do it. Another channel's hosts laugh about how Sam Mustipher's highlight reel is just a series of still shots of him facing back towards Fields arms out-stretched as if begging forgiveness. He was the C for all of '22. In another video I forgot to link to myself he leans over his C for this season, points to an unblocked defender: the C nods then runs the other direction. Fields gestures & asks "Wtf?" The jerk doesn't answer or even help Fields up after he's sacked.
      Now before anyone says "these things happen on every team" not like this. Not after your teammates says "got it" do they run away from the block. right before your eyes & let you know that they can't trust you, not run away from blocks. Other teams miss them occasionally. Not this often & not deliberately running away from them.
      So yeah, after a while your head & feet start moving to look for free pass-rushers _before_ you look for receivers & even then you're never sure you caught them all.
      3) Three _isn't_ a remotely big enough sample size? You sure? If Zach Wilson suddenly put up three games of excellent offense people would cheer he'd turned a corner. Some people Have Charisma. Others seem to attract hate. Eberflus boasted about meddling in the offense & despite him having no experience doing so the press accepted this Without Question to the extent that they never again asked to speak to Getsy.
      & there was a second streak in '23 where the offense played better. It was right after they acquired Sweat & a new DC so Eberflus was too busy elsewhere to meddle as much as he normally did in the offense. Coincidentally, this 5-game stretch also used the same plays as the 3-game one. Since even coaches on the same teams don't use each other's plays, these are Getsy's plays
      So we have a 100% correlation between who is the main offensive play-caller & how well Fields does. So, if it's Fields' issues, how tf is the HC unable to account for them even after being shown how, twice? At that point, even if he has issues, it's the fault of the play-caller shown how to overcome them if they don't use that knowledge.
      Again, this is assuming it's Fields' issues. Go look up any highlight reel. Even his INTs from '21 feature receivers falling down, failing to run routes & in Mooney's case, deflecting passes that hit him in the hands into those of defenders. He's incredibly accurate.
      There's more, but that video link showing his o-line deliberately letting defenders through to him multiple times alone should account for him becoming jittery. I mean imagine seeing your own teammates do that to you...
      Then you come onto the sideline & all your coaches act like everything's normal. It's amazing he didn't have a complete nervous breakdown. There's tons more evidence that Poles & 'Flus wanted him gone, but if the above doesn't convince you, more won't either.
