Precisely, the OC was incompetent. Predictable offense , no blitz-beaters, slow developing downfield routes for all receivers. Hurts never had a chance.
They designed the offense that way deliberately to play to Jalen’s strengths as a passer. In a way, they were almost forced to call their offense this way due to the limitations of their star QB. Which are: he doesn’t see well over the middle, and he doesn’t excel making quick decisions.
The Eagles Offence also used the least amount of Pre Snap Motion, which just makes it harder to recognise how the Defence will play some of those routes

To say he doesn’t throw in the middle of the field is funny. We have seen him do it. Went to a SB. Why all of a sudden stop that? Coaching, coaching and coaching. I’m not saying he wasn’t at fault but this is the prime reason Siriani should have been fired.
I think you did a great job summing up the entirety of the situation. The only thing I would say though, is this happened PRIMARIALLY because of coaching. Hurts has all the talent needed (He showed that in 2022), but without the right coaches, his flaws show. He asks to be coached hard. He knows he needs it, but those coaches let him down last year.
Teams had to stack the box to keep from getting run over. Very small step from that to bringing pressure on passing downs. That's what KC did to them in the Super Bowl. Make Hurts throw perfect dimes under pressure all day long by denying the run and blitzing the heck out of him. Hurts still almost pulled it off, because he was darn near perfect for most of the game. KC's rookie class of bigger, more athletic defensive backs (moving on from Tyrann Mathieu) had a lot to do with it.
I think when Hurts dropped the ball for no reason in that game the NFL figured out the blitz scared and shook the heck out of Hurts so that could have been the beginning to the end.

The Eagles unwillingness to include a hot route has been infuriating as a fan even during our Super Bowl run. It was just finally exposed last year. Jalen can bounce back. I expect to see it. Still with all this he wasn’t awful by any means last year.
Hurts had one of the worst OCs in the league last year and still won 11 games. Abysmal run game, uncreative ways to scheme recievers open, and pass protection took a dip as well.
It was miserable to see Devonta Smith's route chart after the season and realizing (what we already kinda knew) that 99% of the routes he ran started and ended at the same side of the field. He barely crossed the field and EVERY time a player ran a route crossing the field we had very good gain. We all thought "oh now they saw the potential there!!" but no, they just refused to open up the playbook. I don't know exactly what happend but I'm sure there was a bit of hubris there. Like "this team can run anything or nothing at all and talent will carry them". And the fact that we got to 10-1 and AJ Brown had an unbelievable stretch speaks for itself. This is easily a SB winning roster if paired with a good coaching staff.
Very well broken down. As a birds fan, I was screaming at my TV about the coaches not having an answer for the blitz. Here’s to hoping KM has a better hot package and gets Jalen back to the basics in terms of progressions and reading the field bc if so the eagles will be a scary team for sure
The data shows what happened, but not why that happened. To begin with, the Eagles have not given an explanation for the total collapse in the later games of last season. We are only left with supposition based on the team’s off season moves. So, let’s look from that. While the offense didn’t perform as well as last season, it was still one of the better offensive units in the league. The issue was almost exclusively on the defensive side. Mostly, due to a lack of talent in the secondary. It seems to me, there was a game philosophy issue at the root of the failure, on both side of the ball. That philosophy was, the obsessive focus on the ‘big play’. Obsessed with making the big play on offense, and with not giving up the big play on defense. That explains much of what we saw happen on the field. Make no mistake, this was Sirianni’s base football philosophy, as mindlessly stupid as it was. He said as much in more than one Press meeting. On offense, a risky constant pushing of the ball downfield, regardless of down & distance. Made obvious by Hurts’ throwing long when the was an open first down short, and holding the ball waiting to see if a big play develops downfield, often rolling-out to further extend the play. On defense, it produced a soft coverage scheme, giving up first down, after first down toavoid giving up a deep completion.
You didn't touch on the lack of the run game. The Eagles were successful in the 22 season and the early part of last season when the ran the ball. They seemed to become allergic to the run game early and began to rely on "the big play" that they had success with in '22. As you stated, the were very predictable, painfully predictable. The fact that they didn't make any adjustments at all, week after week, was very hard to watch.
Brian Johnson really thought he could run only 5 plays, almost none of them involving the run, motion, or the middle of the field, and thought they were gonna get far. The fact that it actually worked for 11 games before the bottom finally dropped is pretty astounding when you consider that.
I’ve said it a bunch of time. He can’t throw in the middle of the field. I’ve been an Eagles fan since 2001. I pray he gets those passes in the middle next year.
I feel like the Eagles simply expected to bully and out-talent teams each game offensively no matter what plays are being called in the Nick Sirianni era so far but that just isn’t sustainable.
Very accurate take. It isn't sustainable but Sirianni was too stubborn to make any types of adjustments and the offense became predictable. "This is MY offense." - Nick Sirianni
Yup. The best ball hurts throws is a 50/50 to AJ. In 2023 they had the best roster in franchise history, that season was full of ‘talent wins’. Teams figured out hurts and that’s why they lost 7 straight to end the season. But hey, who knows maybe the coordinators can carry Siriani to playoff success again.
Almost like the Whiners expected to bully everyone they faced and we seen how well it worked out in the SB appearances they were in. It was also not sustainable
Luckily they really fixed this and teams now aren't even blitzing all that much anymore because it's not as effective. Kellen Moore's done a good job fixing the offense.
@@tay14741 Does passer rating take into account that he held to ball for 5+ seconds in a clean pocket, unable to make a decision because no one is "college open" ? Someone who trust his accuracy wouldn't held the ball for 5+ seconds... with the best WR duo in the league. But hey.. passer rating amirite !
If the offensive coordinator from the opposing team chooses to use empty personnel on every snap I’d blitz the hell out of whatever QB that is back there
They knew he was hurt last season. They better not try it this season. Teams aren't going to play man to man and they can't play zone. Zone, they have a better running back. Man to man, Jalen can run.
It’s very simple coach Nick has said a million times if her sees one of our two WR1’s on single coverage he wants Jalen to Air it Out deep. There is a reason why Jalen has the highest depth of targets. It’s not complicated and Nick never has built in hot reads into the office he relies on Jalen being super man
The problem with trying to fix all this is that almost all coaches are stubborn to a fault. Can Sirianni honestly assess himself and get better? Doubtful, but its possible.
There was no good run game and the secondary was suspect to be kind to their actual performance. I'd say those were two bigger issues last year than the blitz rate
4:30 yea that’s dumb. Adorie Jackson is one of the fastest corners and he’s like 12 yards deep. Run a curl route at least or do a short catch and get 3-5 yards and who knows maybe he makes a man miss. That’s was a bad play
Hurts inst a great quarterback, he's a good quarterback when everything is going his way. He's what people think Purdy is, but Purdy actually can run and throw instead of run away.
This why you dont hire a first year coordinator with a still developing qb. Never understood why they though that was a good idea especially coming of superbowl.
While I do agree that Jalen Hurts was not great, I think it was way more of a brian johnson issue cuz he was super uncreative and just bad at his job, I think Hurts will do better with Kellen moore as his OC, although probably not as good as he was with steichen

Very well done video!!!!
I imagine everyone brings in against Eagles because they are the only offense in nfl history to not run hot routes.
The Eagles unwillingness to include a hot route has been infuriating as a fan even during our Super Bowl run. It was just finally exposed last year. Jalen can bounce back. I expect to see it. Still with all this he wasn’t awful by any means last year.
Fantastic video.
Thank you!
The eagLes shouldn't have gotten rid of Brian Johnson. Who will Nick Sirrinis scapegoat be now?
great video
Thank you!
the clip were you are explaining what a blitz is, is one of 3 slant routes ran the whole season 😂😂
Very well broken down. As a birds fan, I was screaming at my TV about the coaches not having an answer for the blitz. Here’s to hoping KM has a better hot package and gets Jalen back to the basics in terms of progressions and reading the field bc if so the eagles will be a scary team for sure
Shame on you for taking a better help sponsorship, look into their company. Great video on the other hand.
I've had a great experience using them, what's wrong with them? I'm genuinely curious
World B Free was a great basketball player, but Edge B Free sounds like a potential disaster for any offense!
Two games a season vs the 2023 Wink Martindale Giant's blitz oriented defense has an impact.
Brian Johnson is the reason for everything in this breakdown.
I’ve said it a bunch of time. He can’t throw in the middle of the field. I’ve been an Eagles fan since 2001. I pray he gets those passes in the middle next year.
They got film on him and started doing what they did to him in college he can bounce back if he can hit wrs more quickly
Need an Alex Rollins "how to watch football" live course... To give a deeper appreciation for the game... I'd pay $100
It's a tough game to watch live! Now when they start putting the all-22 live, THAT'S gonna be the game changer
The problem with getting blitzed so much started with Brian Johnson
I feel like the Eagles simply expected to bully and out-talent teams each game offensively no matter what plays are being called in the Nick Sirianni era so far but that just isn’t sustainable.
Pretty much
Very accurate take. It isn't sustainable but Sirianni was too stubborn to make any types of adjustments and the offense became predictable. "This is MY offense." - Nick Sirianni
@@smdeagles2785 One of his few 'adjustments' was to promote Matt "Football Terrorist" Patricia, and we all know how well that went...
MY BROTHER ITS CHRISTMAS WHEN YOU DROP! I HOPE YOU TAKEOFF EVEN HIGHER THIS YEAR 🔥❤️
Thank you brother!!!
Luckily they really fixed this and teams now aren't even blitzing all that much anymore because it's not as effective. Kellen Moore's done a good job fixing the offense.
Worst part is, the 49ers showed that he sucks if you play the contain game too.
As long as he's in the pocket, he struggles. Gimmick QB.
he literally has the highest pocket passer rating bro what…
@@tay14741 Does passer rating take into account that he held to ball for 5+ seconds in a clean pocket, unable to make a decision because no one is "college open" ?
Someone who trust his accuracy wouldn't held the ball for 5+ seconds... with the best WR duo in the league.
But hey.. passer rating amirite !
@@YanChose who is he supposed to throw to if all there is are go routes bro what
If the offensive coordinator from the opposing team chooses to use empty personnel on every snap I’d blitz the hell out of whatever QB that is back there
The eagles passing offense Hurts to watch recently.
I can not believe we were so bad to finish the season
They knew he was hurt last season. They better not try it this season. Teams aren't going to play man to man and they can't play zone. Zone, they have a better running back. Man to man, Jalen can run.
Also aj brown was hurt with a knee also jalen hurts had a hurt finger jason wasent in and ect
Looking back at this now when he is one of the best in the league against the blitz this season, shows you how dogshit our coaching was.
Love the holograms!
It’s very simple coach Nick has said a million times if her sees one of our two WR1’s on single coverage he wants Jalen to Air it Out deep. There is a reason why Jalen has the highest depth of targets. It’s not complicated and Nick never has built in hot reads into the office he relies on Jalen being super man
Soooo Jalen hurts just a taller Russell Wilson??
The problem with trying to fix all this is that almost all coaches are stubborn to a fault. Can Sirianni honestly assess himself and get better? Doubtful, but its possible.
If hurts is getting blitz more then the receiver should know to turn around quickly. AJ brown or 88 could had work together to get short catch at 1:38
That offense was horrendous last year, they only survived the beginning of the year off of talent
3:30 is a very sick edit
Shane was him for the offense, and Brian Johnson couldn't build upon that hype.
Hurts kills the offense by scrambling to the right and always looking to throw outside. The frustration is the equivalent of McNabb dirt balls.
There was no good run game and the secondary was suspect to be kind to their actual performance. I'd say those were two bigger issues last year than the blitz rate
Hopefully these new coaches have the capability to put the players in better positions since sirianni is just a cheerleader.
4:30 yea that’s dumb. Adorie Jackson is one of the fastest corners and he’s like 12 yards deep. Run a curl route at least or do a short catch and get 3-5 yards and who knows maybe he makes a man miss. That’s was a bad play
That's why Moore is here now. Motion stops the blitz. It forces adjustments
He’s a gamer he’ll adjust watch.
nice
Hurts inst a great quarterback, he's a good quarterback when everything is going his way.
He's what people think Purdy is, but Purdy actually can run and throw instead of run away.
The Eagles players’ talent was able to carry them to 10-1. The coaching staff was the problem. I hope Moore coaches Jalen hard.
Just tells you how junior varsity Sirianni really is as an offensive mind
This why you dont hire a first year coordinator with a still developing qb. Never understood why they though that was a good idea especially coming of superbowl.
I believe alot will disappear with Moore as play caller Herbert was really good vs the blitz last season
“Nice” 😂
It's a "blitz" if the the defense rushes six or more. That forces man to man or zone.
It's 5 or more, make sure you double check your sources cause people will put whatever online!
@@AlexRollinsNFL Rushing five leaves six defenders to cover five receivers. It's not a man-to-man situation.
This lil worrying as Jalens my keeper qb and guiotine qb. Tush push tds helped bunch last year
Eagles got to take what is giving like they did the year they went to the Super Bowl
While I do agree that Jalen Hurts was not great, I think it was way more of a brian johnson issue cuz he was super uncreative and just bad at his job, I think Hurts will do better with Kellen moore as his OC, although probably not as good as he was with steichen
Moore is going to bring out the best in him
ZERO BLITZ. Hurts Kryptonite
Could’ve ran the ball more to fix things throughout the season. Running slows up the blitzing and pass rush
They couldn't get any movement while running
