GoPro + Kenworth Roadtrain powered by CAT 3408

  • Just some random clips I took with my GoPro Hero 3+ Silver Edition on a trip in my Kenworth road train, powered by a Caterpillar 3408 V8. This trip took me from Melbourne to Perth to Port Hedland to Darwin and back to Melbourne.
    A light load of tower crane sections, only about 9 tons a trailer, giving a gross weight of about 50 tons. Normally my gross weight would be about 80 tons or 180,000 lbs
    .
    You can see the trailer cut-in with 2 trailers, you can imagine the cut-in with 3 trailers with a triple roadtrain.

    Just like everyone else says... Love the sound of that big old V8. I hope this is the way you always drive (steady pace and not too much strain on the engine) and not just a show for the camera. Makes you an operator and not just a steering wheel attendant. Great work, and can't wait to see more!

    My hat is off to the people who drive these machines. Australia has some geographical peculiarities that make it uneconomic to criss-cross the country with railways. These trucks are the red blood cells of the Australian economy. And the sound of that cat grumbling through the gears is mesmerizing.
    And (going back to the Stuart Highway in the mid 70s) being overtaken by one of these beasts on corrugated dirt roads with ruts nearly a metre deep full of bulldust and sections of pea gravel which are the reason small vehicles must keep the speed down in the first place... terrifying and exhilarating...
    Oh, yeah, add dust storms or rain to the equation.Respect to all truckies.

    I remember the day I realized I wanted to be a truck driver in the US. Me and a friend were driving our ford ranger through some backroads after a really bad thunderstorm that dropped tons of water. We came to a stop after seeing this miniature lake that had formed in the road and what appeared to be an oil field semi that looked like it was stuck. We decided to get out and see if the driver needed any help but as we got out we realized this semi truck, that was submerged almost all the way up to the top of the hood in water wasnt stuck at all. It was moving, very slowly but surely. We watched in disbelief as the driver made his way though the dirt road that was completely waterlogged and once he made it to where we were pulled over he rolled down the window took one look at our little ranger and said "Yep, I dont think you guys are gunna make it" Thats when I realized I wanted to be a trucker. These aussie road trains are legendary status.

    Nice filming, your shots are excellent and good lord the sound when the gears are shifted, when you press the accelerator, the beautiful puff of diesel inspired exhaust soot, the engine and exhaust note, the whistle of the turbo ...oooh my. Forgive my rambling, only a dedicated trucker & diesel enthusiast would understand.
    Btw your rig despite the at times harsh off tarmac driving conditions is clean, I noticed how relatively clean your trailer tyres were in the initial shots.

    • @vanjakukec9863
      @vanjakukec9863 7 лет назад +2

      You don know that most American truck manufacturers are owned by European companies. Mack is owned by Volvo. Freightliner and Western Star are owned by Daimler. International is owned by Navistar which is US based but operates in many countries. Peterbilt, and Kenworth are owned by Seattle based Paccar which also happens to own DAF. Basically they use common components among their different lines, so Freightliner will use Daimler made components in their trucks and Macks uses many Volvo powertrains etc. .

      In 1984 at Wudinna S.A, I'd watch a near new TNT COE/KW/3408 Prime mover/single ahead of three more TNT's passing close behind, as it was said they were used as a windjammer in the strong head winds as they across the Nullarbor

      Joe Hupp You need to get one where you can alter the angle of the field of view, the basic White Edition you can't do that. The Silver Edition like I've got gives you 3 FOVs (wide, normal and narrow). There's a new GoPro 4 out now, but I am happy with my GoPro 3 Silver Edition, and it's got a pretty good mic as long as you don't use it in the wind.
