As a railfan who shares an interest in big diesels in general, that railway footage was the icing on the cake.
    2:53 - BHP 4340 and other are EMD SD70ACe/LCs powered by an EMD 16-710G3 16cyl 2-stroke engines.
3:20 - Rio Tinto 9121 and other are GE ES44ACis powered by 12cyl 4-stroke GE Evolution Series diesels (GEvo) which is why we call them "Gevos" here in the States.
You will notice "AC" in the model numbers for both. The diesels spin big alternators, which power AC motors "in the wheels" using inverters.
Great video, thank you for uploading!

I have massive respect here in America for truck drivers, and most of their trucks are often around 37 metric tons gross, though we have those that go over regularly. But you guys pulling 70+ metric tons gross, for often WAY further than we do in America, you guys rock. Also, y'all have some down right gorgeous trucks too, and that CAT V8 sounds glorious. We don't have many of those in trucks, the two 3408 engines I have seen in person were mobile generator sets.

How's this for an interesting fact that I only learned a few days ago, Nullarbor isn't an Australian Aboriginal word, its just "null arbor" as in "no trees"
Maybe everyone else (from here in Aus) knew that already but I know I didn't!

The 90 mile straight, you have to admire the early settlers and explorers who headed in that direction not knowing what lay beyond, water food resources etc.

This was Fascinating to watch, pulling all that weight on a 90 mile straight road! The Drone Footage was Cool as Hell, along with music at the end. It made it somewhat Surreal an Lonely! Hamma down Captain! Does anyone happen to know the name of the music/song at the end by chance?

I knew from the thumbnail this would be in Australia!
I'm guessing "sleepers" are in the US called "ties." As an ex-railroader, I noted that the 120 ton(ne)s would fill one railroad car of a 100+ car train. Your trains may be even longer. I noted US locomotives on at least one of those trains. Maybe made there under licens(c)e.
    Nice drone footage!

    • @gm16v149
      @gm16v149  3 года назад +3

The sleepers or ties as you call them were going to the iron ore railways in the isolated north-west. The cars gross out at 160 tonnes (176 US tons) and the BHP trains gross out at around 43,000 tonnes with a 268 car train. The EMD and GE locos are fully imported from North America, they aren’t used anywhere else in Australia because they are too big.

    Goodday Mate,
I would if loved to have seen & heard your Kenworth here in Melbourne, it is a rare treat to hear 3408 Caterpillar these days.
But in the last 2 years a company by the name of Midway Concrete in Laverton North are running a Peterbilt 379 on a 19 meter B Double with a pneumatic tanker.
It is a tri , bogie set up.
I live in Port Melbourne & this Peterbilt loads from Lorimer st straight off the big concrete hoppers feed by the vessel Goliath which comes & goes between Victoria & Western Australia.
Now this Peterbilt twin 7 inch stacks & pushing in excess of 650 hp I have been told.
When it pulls out of the terminal it is grossing 63 tons all up, the noise OMG the noise that 3408 makes on a quiet Saturday morning you never hear anything like it in Melbourne.
Forget about Scania, Mercedes Benz, Mack V8's this Peterbilt drowns them all out.
I get out of bed on a Saturday just to see & hear this Peterbilt plus follow it over the Westgate Bridge all is slogs it up the bridge.
    Windows down just sounds awesome.
Plus I work besides the Westgate Freeway in South Melbourne & you know when the Peterbilt is passing bye it has a thumping noise all to itself .
I am so envious you drive a 3408 compared to my 2644 Mercedes Benz.
Big fan of your Kenworth love to check it out next time it is in Melbourne.
How many 3408 Cabover's did they make any idea.
    Cheers
    Louis 👍

I think they made about 30 in Australia with the Caterpillar 3408 V8. Mine was the first one, used to belong to a guy called Lloyd Davies from Terang. I’ve heard about that Pete, haven’t seen it yet. You should get a video of it.

Good to see the old girl still pulling strong. Seen ya around north of Karratha. If you ever meet a bloke called Dicko or meet a guy in a red Director Kenworth, tell Google and Declan say hi.
