    One thing about the 3408s you get absolute reliability as long as you treat them right. I've owned one in a KW cabover here in Australia for over 20 years and the only time it let me down it grenaded a turbo once. It's hauling A trains @ 175,000 lb, sometimes up to 265,000 lb. It's still working hard to this day.
    The more weight you put on, the more the fuel mileage is the same as a late model engine.
    I think his engine could do with an in-frame though, it took a long time to start. Mine smokes at cold but nothing like that. When it's hot it doesn't blow much smoke at all.
    They are something of a legend here in Oz, KW only made about 30 here. I think KW and Pete made a lot more in US.

      Billy Bob : When one of your those that you Dearly Love, comes down with IRREVERSIBLE LUNG DISEASE, after longterm exposure to the sickening fumes and smoke. ( C.O.P.D. ) and they wind up in a nursing home and are attached to an oxygen machine via an surgical openening in their throat where an oxygen delivering hose is inserted down into the lung, THEN you will PROFUSELY THANK those that serve in the environmental protection movement !! As much as I did not care for his policies "I NOW" offer my deepest RESPECTS, for the then ( Conservative Republican, in the 1970s ) President of the U.S.A. I do not offer any disrespect to you sir, but as a nursing home patient ( attached to an oxygen machine, forever ) I urge all of you truck and car enthusiasts ( like myself ) to re-think your attitudes. Sign Me: Living in a nursing home FLAT on my back for the rest of my life attached to an oxygen concentrator !!! 😭😢😩 P.S. Beautiful antique trucks and autos appearing at special antique fairs, may BRIEFLY ( but no more )be given ( I am a B series Mack lover, since childhood ) a moment to show off those great sounding monster diesel engines. Had one in a 1978 Pete EXHD with a 6x5 over and it would get you in trouble if you let it real fast with the law. Fuel mileage was not the best out of one of those engines, 4-5 miles to the gallon, but it could get the job done.
      Also had one in the same year truck that stayed in the Cathouse more than on the road and Cat dropped an experimental 3406 engine as a replacement by accident. That white cat engine would do 600kw on a dino.

      I have too. The KTA 600 was a good engine, but others and I found out about the KTTA 600 and ran them as they were the king of the engines back in the late '70s and early '80s with 1200 hp. If you paid attention you could get 6 miles or a little more to the gallon out of them. You had to run either the 6x4 or 6x5 with them as the 15 speed lower gear bearings would not hold up to those engines.

      BigRig Videos : How many of these guys and gals develop CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE ( C.O.P.D. for short, like wise for 🐕companion pets, if any ) after breathing in the smoke and fumes, of these big diesel powered rigs for a long extended period of time. There is NO cure. You live for the rest of your life in utter misery. You are CONSTANTLY short of breath, and in many cases like MYSELF, you wind up in a nursing home with staff bathing you, and putting diapers on you, as you are COMPLETELY INCAPACITATED ! You MUST TAKE MANY medications to assist your breathing, not to mention that in the more severe cases, you are attached to a breathing machine ..........oxygen concentrator, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, year round. Believe you me, this is no way to live your retirement years, after working so damn hard all of your life. BE forewarned ! 😩 P.S. Once you are diagnosed with C.O.P.D. it progressively gets WORSE! Not trying to scare you.....,I'm just "Shouting Out" a warning, of what has happened to ME !

      How do you Like That ? it's unprovable that you can get cancer from driving a truck that emits black smoke from its exhaust. cigarette users are far more likely to get lung cancer. what's more worrying to me as a driver is blood clots from so Mich sitting with your knees bent and prostrate cancer from again, sitting for long periods of time and holding back from using the restroom.

    LOVE the old 3408's, we had one new in a logging truck in 1980.... nothing outpulled it, we pulled up to 175,000 lb on 5 axles on a restricted route permit, it burnt fuel but you were grinning the whole time, had a couple of 8V92's too... they burned just as much fuel and couldn't pull themselves off a stump, don't think I ever chained up running the 3408, just keep backing out of the throttle when it started to wipe it's feet, could almost count the pistons firing and it just kept on going

      8V92's were a decent Detroit, at least less oil leakage than the 71 series engines, though in my truck technician days (1978-1983), NOTHING out pulled the Cat 3406's or 08's with the same hp ratings, they always had more torque, especially against the 2stroke Detroits. Only time I ever saw a Detroit come close was an 8V92 who's owner had installed 10mm injectors.

      Drove a Super Liner Freightliner back in the 90's with the 3408 dumping into a can then straight pipes. It would roar! Great sound at idle too, echoing in that can. How to spot a superliner: Cab widened, vertical stack on head lights for radiator clearance, narrow foot wells, ah never mind you'll never see one.

    • @rondye9398
      @rondye9398 7 лет назад +1

      When I worked for Caterpillar in Portland Oregon, these original trucks were called Superliners, later changed to Power liners I think for legal reasons. The development work was done at the Cat dyno facility. Interestingly although they look like a regular freighliner none of the body panels are the same! So don't wreck one.

      yeah it's funny you wouldn't think I'm a nice warm day like that but the funny part is I know a guy's got to 72 Pete with a 1693 V8...and it doesn't matter if it's a warm summer day at 85 degrees outside or a winter day at 5 below zero
      that cranky Kitty is not happy unless you hit it with the preheater doesn't matter what the temperature but if you preheat it she will just light right off

    I like how the gauges are setup on the dash. I prefer the Old School dials over digital readouts. I trained on an old 1969 Pete in driving school. We had a KW too but it was just for the oval track as it was a COE and we just ran conventional on the roads.

    I keep coming back to this for a watch...
    I started trucking in 1977 in a 352 Pete with a 1693TA Cat and a 13 over with 4.11 gears and 11.22 tires..
    It topped out in the low 80s but it would pull a house with ease.
    Similar clatterpillar sound.
    I loved that engine... was never quite satisfied with any engine after that... very satisfying to run.
    I used to run out of paper mills in New England. Leaving Jersey at 2am with light loads nirth and heavy loads back.
    On rainy nights she used to spin the tires going up the Palisades Hill to the GW... 45 miles per... 1800 rpm... suddenly the revs are fluctuating up... 27,000 pounds in the trailer and this thing was spinning the tires...
    Yea... that was trucking fir me in the 70s.
    By the way... Im a Pete guy all the way...
    But those W900 A model KWs are the nicest looking trucks ever made.

      Actually moat diesel rig dump black smoke.. Apparently you never heard the term rolling coal lmao and I'm pretty sure that truck doesn't have a dpf setup so yeah...

    • @andreasthayer
      @andreasthayer 5 лет назад +2

      Some think "rollin coal" is cool...frankly the "coal" just is a sign of an out of adjustment system. Some visible exhaust is expected when gunning the engine repeatedly but leaving long trails of smoke is an engine begging for a tune up. It's an 18L engine so properly tuned it ought to toss the rig around. He kept saying it's a clanky clattering engine but the one I ran was smoooooth like a sewing machine.(or my bald head)
      It shouldn't sound like a box of marbles. And bully dog and other smoker chips are programmed to dump a ton of fuel into the engine to "roll coal" but unless you adjust the oxygen intake you're really wasting it without creating more ponys...let's turn some diesel into NOISE!!!
