    Back in the days... As an electrician I installed 2 a v16 quad-turbo Caterpillars for emergency power generation at a hospital. These power plants were enormous. I can't remember all the specs however the radiators were biggest radiators I have ever seen in my life . The day tanks was 300 gallons x2 with to 15000 gallon tanks underground. That job was really fun. Awesome experience as a young man. I think the output on the generator was 30000 KV each. The sound when they start it up was like no other engine I've ever heard.. especially under load, in the engine-room it was completely deafening.

    All I know is that, when I was a H/D truck mechanic in the late 70's and early 80's, 3406's and 3408's were the gold standard engine options you could get. EVERYONE who had one would never think of repowering to a different brand

    We still manufacture and use both the 3300 and 3400 series in some countries with lower emissions standards and even put them in new equipment in those countries. Also, caterpillar itself didn’t really use steam tractors. It was formed by the combination of Best and Holt tractor companies and they were using gas engines by that time. The name “Caterpillar” was from how reporters said the tracked tractors crawled like a caterpillar across the fields.

    I'm not familiar with the 3408 but the first truck I drove when I started truckin had a 3406 E (6 cylinder) and it had 1.75 million miles and last I saw it had over 2 million. The next truck I drove was a C-15 (updated and improved 3406 I think) and it had 850k miles when I started and 1.35 million last I drove it and in nearly half a million miles other than oil changed and routine maintenance the alternator went out and the number 2 fuel injector mounting bolt vibrated loose and needed torqued down and that was it! It blows my mind that any engine can do a half a million miles without needing parts replaced and even more impressive that it had already logged .85 million miles already!

    Love the 3400 series, easy to work on , reliable and plenty of grunt , 3406, 3408, 3412’s I have had in generators , wheel loaders, dozers, scrapers, excavators etc. the best service life we achieved with any of the engines was a 3412 in a 600kva generator, 35,000 operating hours before overhaul, and another 45,000 hrs after before it was sold, the lowest hours because of application and demography was the 3406 fitted in the D8N and some R’s of 6,000 hrs, mainly partial seizes pulling pistons apart , but all in all great engines 👌🏻😎

      We use inline 6 diesel engines due to serviceability, reliability, and complexity. The v8 diesel is the literal enemy of all 3, and makes less torque. The reason the v8 diesel died was because they were all turds, if only chevy and Ford could learn that lesson with pickup trucks.

    Hopefully the diesel people in here can confirm or correct me on this. But, I believe the intake and exhaust valve position in the heads is to help the air "spin" in the cylinders, to keep more of it in the center where the combustion chamber is in the piston, and under the injector.

    • @174wolf
      @174wolf 11 месяцев назад +6

      Not technically in the center, but to get the injected fuels flame front to reach as much of the oxygen in the cylinder as possible by swirling it around. Some engines also use "swirl flaps" to change flow below under different operation points.

    If overheated the 3400 was prone to liner recession, causing head gasket failure.
    The Cat repair was to remove heads and piston and liners, and machine the block to fit a stainless steel ring shim under the liner, returning liner protrusion to max spec.
    It made the engine better than standard and never failed again, even when run hot.
    They where also prone to exhaust studs breaking, requiring replacement.
    It was a good engine and was nice to work on.

From what I've heard, the K19 is also very reliable and similar to the B5.9 has a very long service interval and capable of the same if not more hp and torque than the 3408s and cheaper to run and maintain as well. @@siam_g.d.s This is a long post, but very informative. Here in the US we called them the KT Series or even just K engines. They made a lot more power in the trucking application and lot of drivers have testified that they could bog down and grunt and lot better than the 3408. The KT-450 was the most common K up here until the KTA-600's popularity took off like a rocket. The stories of factory 3408s walking past K's up hills were because they faced a KT-450. Several guys bought a 450hp 3408 DITA, modified it, and succeeded in trouncing some of the factory KTA-600s that roamed the passes. The thing with a KTA-600 is that you never needed to upgrade it; there was so much power right out of the factory.

      KT-400 (450 Derated) @2100 RPM (1974-1985)
      - 1200 lb/ft (1627 N•m) @1500 RPM - 20% rise
      K = Cummins' family of 1150 ci (19L) inline-6 diesels
      T = Turbocharged
      A = Aftercooled
      C = California - California has always had tighter emission standards than other US states. Often manufacturers had a model inter series tuned specifically to meet California emission standards. If a trucker based in California ordered a truck, it could only come with a California-certified engine. In the case of the KTC-450, Cummins had to aftercool a KT-450 to meet the standards.
      * Both the KT-450 and KTA-600 were released for the 1974 trucking year. The KTA-600 was however, briefly taken away and brought back in 1977 when Cummins released the Big Cam I Series of 855s. All because it was too far ahead of the market; only about 2-3 went in a truck prior to '77. The KT-450's the only contenders at release were Cat's 1693TA (425 hp, 1275 lb ft) and Detroit Diesel's 12V-71N (456 hp 1200 lb/ft). The 12V-71T (525hp 1450 lb/ft) did exist, but it was almost mythical.
      † The torque rating of 1650 Cummins gave for the KTA-600 has received lots of scrutiny and rumors that it output more torque than advertised. I tapped into a very informative thread in a facebook group discussing this rumor. A common reason spread about that Cummins never advertised it higher because the transmissions of that time weren't rated for that much torque. Lots of drivers and current-operators concluded that they believe the KTA-600 put out about 1700-1800 lb/ft (2305-2440 N•m) of torque.

I didn't like them though because at 10,000 hours they turned into ticking timebombs and it was just a matter of when you where going to have to swing the engine. Also the fuel lines where prone to cracking and misting fuel into the air. Thanks goodness diesel fuel is hard to catch fire.

    I am very sure that the 3406E was being found in new trucks in the late 1990's........so the 3400 series did not die out in 1985. It was just that the 3408 fell out of use in trucks, because of cost and weight. In Australia, the 3408 and K19 Cummins were the engines of choice for triple (130,000 kg gross) and quad (166,000kg gross) road trains in remote regions. Operators were not driving "thousands of miles" on those engines........there were getting a million miles. At 6.08 that "double" road train is loaded with steel rail track sleepers from Whyalla and is negotiating a round about near a small place called Jamestown SA, Australia. The most common, large capacity V8 turbo diesel that was massively popular in Australia was the EM9-V8 used in Macks..........they would have outnumbered the 3408 about 400 to 1 and were common all through the 1980's until about 2000. The fuel price spike in about 2005 wiped them out.

      Loggers up in Vancouver also ordered or swapped 3408 and 3412’s in their Pacific logging trucks which often hauled 150+tons (136,000kg). Of course they were in a similar boat of being outnumbered by old detroit v12’s but once they quit (especially the 12v92 which had a tendency to snap cranks between the blocks) they would swap them for just about anything else.

    I don't know where you got the 1985 year for end of production, but it's still being made.
    You can check CAT's site.
    The 3412 is niw the C27, and its successor is called C32.
    Makes almost twice the power btw.
    So, I don't think the 3408 is that good really.
    If you can make twice the power, while consuming less fuel, the starting point might not be that good after all.
    Sure, reliability is important. But something tells me the C32 doesn't have to be rebuilt every week either, and with twice the power, it can do more work, while being cheaper to run.
