      Completely unprecedented for the franchise. Even when its entrance numbers surpassed SF numbers in the release year... after all not every game surpass SF just for being new. Just like the fact it's getting a 4th season, which is rare in this genre... though some people might not be fully aware of that just because the only two games with long dlc cycles are SF and TK, the mainstream games that everyone plays. But that's a tremendous achievement.

      @@hands-ongaming7180 MK's never really been top 3 in terms of competitive scene size. It's at the top (aside from Smash) in terms of sales/mass popularity, certainly, but that's because of massive appeal to more casual players. But the FGC, tournament-going player base for it, while it's always there, has never really been as big as those for the other big names in the genre.

    • @faceurhell
      @faceurhell 7 дней назад

      @@hands-ongaming7180 Competitively, in the post-SF4 world, MK has always lagged behind the newest Street Fighter, the newest Tekken, the newest Smash Bros and Melee in terms of competitive interest. Now Guilty Gear has done that with Strive, and Dragon Ball will probably be above there when we get that inevitable DBFZ sequel. And who knows, maybe if Capcom gets their fighting game division together, their newest Versus games might do this as well.
      A lot of factors go against MK; poor launches, poor game states, lacking competitive interest outside of Europe and America, bad PC ports, no actual release of the game in many Asian countries, and MK being too violent to appeal to younger players. But if I'm NRS I don't care much about all but the first two issues, because NRS' last 5 (soon to be 6) releases have all been significant blockbuster hits.

    Tekken went from 1800 entrants as their peak to over 4000, and SF6 has had 2 years in a row with over 5000 entrants. Obviously correlation isn't causation, but the fact that both these games have very high-profile and _very_ successful newcomer-level content creator tournaments (e.g. CR Cup and Sajam Slam) I don't think should be overlooked for these games' popularity

    • @Freakattaker

      There's some amount of self looping feedback since part of the reason newcomer level content creator tournaments happened is BECAUSE there were newcomer level content creators interested in getting into these games, BUT the tournaments absolutely played a major part in getting public eye onto these games in a way that hasn't been seen in a longgg time.
      Without the tournaments, who knows how many of those content creators would've really gone on to get into these games and spread awareness of how cool they are to the wider audience and ecosystem outside of the typical FG player base.

      @@leithaziz2716 And T7's massive growth itself compared to older games is related with some outside factors like the strong support that the franchise got in that decadent period (post Tag 2)... and even the factor of SF's decadence because of SF5's early years. That failure broke the hype wave the franchise was surfing on due to SF4's success, and gave an opening for people to give more attention to games from Bandai Namco and Arc Systems. Because in the time of SF4 it was stealing a lot of attention from other games, no matter how competent, like GG Xrd and KOF 13.

      @@emperormegaman3856 In a way HxH is like DBFZ, just not in the aspects that interests the fg fan and consumer. Like, it's unquestionably the result from DBFZ's success, which combined a famous anime franchise with a solid traditional 2d fg format. I dont know how much the specific use of MvC system (loosely but close enough) mattered... but it must be a factor, because MvC died in that period and there was no other game in that style. Regardless HxH is doing the same thing: big anime franchise + MvC system.
      But one important factor for sure is that traditional 2d fgs based on animes became very rare after the ps2 gen, because the technology growth and the decadence of 2d fgs motivated companies to use other genres for animes, even if it's the 3d arena fg format. So people immediately gave a lot of attention to a traditional 2d fg of DBZ. And Eighting (dev company) is making this cheap HxH game betting 100% on how critically starving the HxH community is and their willingness to support the game.

    • @Sakaki98
      @Sakaki98 7 дней назад

      Games in a different sub genre can absolute share the same misses when it comes to the quality and support of the product, and those are where all the comparisons are being made.
      The fact that Eighting’s involved ensures a similar lack of balance given their history(which is or isn)t fine depending on who you ask) , they sport a similarly anorexic roster size relative to their respective subgenres, they both are getting graphically diffed by games two or even three console generations prior, and HxH has arguably less of an excuse for these things because there are copy-pasted MvC animations all over the place that would assumedly lessen the budget and manpower necessary to alleviate the aforementioned issues.
      And when it comes to post-launch support concerns, that’s probably the one area where Eighting has failed harder than Bamco with how much of a laughing stock DNF Duel has become for taking 2 whole ass years to complete a single season of where even the disastrously launched so-poor-we-were-basically-forced-into-Sony-exclusivity SFV had finished their third season by this time.
      Saying that a 2D and 3D tag fighter have nothing in common is probably the biggest reach here lmao

    The problem with MK isnt the number of competitors, it's that the games growth is stagnant. Every other game has grown immensely over the years but NRS games have just stayed around the numbers it usually has. They have to do something. They have to rethink how the game flows competitively. Obviously its in its own stratosphere with Smash when it comes to sales, but even Smash can pull in large numbers of competitors from those huge install bases.
    Also, to the dismay of the vocal minority, they need to add an option for gore. Other countries wont touch the game and companies wont sponsor MK bc of it. Literally an option hurts no one because its your CHOICE whether to have it on or off. If you argue against it then youre just seeking confrontation and arent a part of the arugment

      I'm not an MK fan, but in my eyes, the gore IS the game. Obviously it's a feature that hurts the game in lots of ways but I don't think they should take one of the key features of a series just to (maybe) increase popularity.
      Cause even Injustice 2 was looked at with negative impressions competitively. NRS just kind of misses the mark in the regard by default.

MK tournament numbers have been bad, and most of it's player base went back to XI (according to Steam Charts). Plus it's part of "the big 3" it shouldn't be getting lapped by 3 anime games. Uni growing is beautiful to see, that games tournaments always end up being a gem to watch at these events I swear.

    For context, the NRS competitive community usually isn't that big for single games, as much of that audience is used to move on to the next title when it comes out around 2 years later. They don't latch on to a specific game much.
    This is why beyond the 1st year, the dedicated competitive audience dwindles down fast as they're ready to move on and don't feel the need to go back (Maximillion is kinda the exception in that regard for MKX content creation). MK11's continued support was when a lot of players were caught off-guard and realised they couldn't just wait for the next new thing, and MK1 might go the same route. That and the rough launch is why the entrance numbers are so low (despite this being MK1's first year at EVO).
