Facts. I have several friends that grenaded them back in the day trying to sqeak out 20 more hp. The best way to get more power in a neon is to buy a 350z or something along those lines and save 10k
Finally this is how rcr should make shorts. Next do one grilling or fixing a cabnet or maybe grab coffee in a drive thru lol getting heating but then having to be nice yurrr
I remember years ago I was looking for 1 or a wrx or si. I ended up getting a 4dr Si. I never regretted it once. Such a fun car. Maybe not as fast but was plenty. Si ended up putting down 237 whp
I remember being at the dragstrip about a year after those came out… There were four or five there on a test and tune night. They were consistently running low 13 second quarter mile times. Impressive for a little car with a little engine.
@@Meatpopsicle999that’s how I feel about the wrx’s aswell hell the ej25 had been in production since the 80s you can pick one up for so cheap most people don’t even care to build an engine and would rather blow a motor once per year
My buddy and his Father owned nearly a dozen at one point. Even had a new old stock one with less than 20K kilometers from Canada. I always trashed him but thought the commitment was cool. My bro is kicking doors somewhere now. God bless him and his neon ass 🙏
Years ago I had a coworker who built a bonneville streamliner with a neon SRT4 engine in it built to 450 hp. Most of the surviving muscle cars out there were hot rods that were restored back to stock. Cars that are truly all original are full of rust and mouse nests and worn out parts. This is the reality of classic cars. A lot of restored cars have been down to a bare shell if they were fixed properly. If Im going to build a car from the ground up, I will make no pretense of it being any kind of numbers matching original or in any way stock. I'm building something that can be driven safely in modern traffic. My 49 chevy 3100 was badly rusted out, had the good parts picked off it, and what was left was destined to get recycled. There was no floor left under the seat when I pulled it, the engine had been left open and full of rusty water from decades in a junkyard. People still asked me "your going to keep it stock, right? It looks so cool with that rusty patina? At least keeping the straight six? " Um... Hell no! I cut it all apart along with other vehicles, media blasted it, welded it back together, and am building a truck out of it. About a third of the body is now reproduction sheetmetal and fabricated parts welded in. I modified the frame to accept mustang suspension and power steering, a limited slip rearend, a fuel injected chevy v8, and 4 wheel power disc brakes. Outside of the body, frame, glass, and trim, none of the mechanical or electrical parts are 1949 chevy anymore. Oh, fuel tank will be under the bed instead of in the cab behind the seat now. Will have seat belts and air conditioning eventually, but Im not there yet. I am a hot rodder and a artist, not an archaeologist. I did leave just one of the bullet holes for character. 😂😂
this is true for about any car. if you need to replace items sure go for something more durable which is designed to handle more power, but dont go throwing new things in while ignoring basic maintenance
They will take a lot of boost if the tune is right. A lot of kids ruined them and gave them a bad rap early because they were the cheapest fast car you could buy when they were newish.
I was waiting for him to walk into the other room to show us his SRT-4. 😂 In all seriousness, I drive into work at the same time every day, apparently at the same time as another dude, and I get to see it in all of its glory for 30 minutes a day. They are beautiful little beetle looking cars.
Saw one riding on welds with angry headlights on the way to work this morning. It was a time capsule. The skittle had a lot of street cred back in the day.
Yeah idk this seems like a bad take. Neons are pretty easy to modify, within reason, for not crazy money. If you want 500 whp it’ll cost ya but mid to upper 300 range no big deal. If one has survived all stock this long I do agree to leave it be though, not many left stock and in good shape.
Mine lasted with 500hp for years daily driven. 400whp on 93 and she still lives on. These cars are stout and reliable when taken car of properly. Just kinda a lost chassis at this point. Going to be a lot of lost knowledge on these cars soon, already seems that way
I had an SRT4 that put down 540whp. Fully built everything and rocked out for 6 years with no issues. But yeah, over $14K was spent to get it there. And the torque steer was downright dangerous! Fun car tho. Now I'm running a boosted Viper.
Got mine around the start of the c. vid. Found one that need tires rockers panels n a front fender had allot of miles 283k ish I know allot about neons so I always wanted the srt 4. I did simple mods to mine got the stock air box out of the way cause it takes up to much room, had a after market hood from a different neon, got some 16s for spare set vw rims the Canadian style kind look similar to the stock 17s, upper strut bars, did a lot of maintenance to it water pump timing belt, coil wires plugs, struts brakes sway bar links, gas tank strap lol just one, radiator, fan, most recent was metal lines that go to the heater core rotted out had to make new lines, has no ac or pwr steering, all 3 motor mounts, put a 160 thermostat in it so it kicks on sooner I am sure I am missing something also have a oem turbo and manifold for one day. I have a problem this is all over a 5 year span. I don’t drive it in the snow it gets put up for winter the salt will make it die faster n I wanna be able to drive it for as long as I can
The neon r/t 5 speed was so much fun but it's a dodge they made a few crappy cars in those years to present. I was a kid washing these in 98-1999 at a chrysler dealership. Dart 340 was real fun too.
I’m not a huge SRT 4 guy but. There are plenty of well tuned maintained SRT 4 cars pushing 350-400 reliably. A good tune, quality parts and a well taken care of car won’t have any problems pushing those numbers. You don’t have any idea what you’re even talking about. People get 300 with a stock car 😂
The original output was falsely advertised as 215 HP followed by the exact same 2.4L DOHC Turbo making 230 HP. My neighbor had one with the Chrysler stage 2 upgrade which includes bigger injectors, turbo and new ECU. I don't remember if they could flash those earlier ecus so they had you swap it out. He ran 13.1 in the 1/4 mile. The same as a modified Cobra Mustang The engine has forged internals. The pistons are cast aluminum which kept that weird design from the PT Cruiser that shared many of the same parts such as the head, block, etc. The non-turbo and Turbo 2.4 engines shared most of the same parts except the rotating assembly and cams. The cast iron block will take the boost but the head wants to lift.
They are very strong especially the bottom end. They are successfully modified all the time. 500-700hp examples are all over and no they aren’t all super high end some are stock with big turbos and huge injectors.
I still kick myself for not taking the note on one of these used back when I totalled my 09 Impala. Our next door neighbor worked at the used lot for a big dealership in my hometown and after doing some math came back with 4 cars he suggested I could safely go for as far as insurance and note went. A 13 Spark that'd be paid off outright, an 05 SRT-4 with a ~$100 note for 12 months, an 09 Escape with a similar note, or an 04 Volvo outright. I was delivering pizzas at the time and even though I really liked the Neon and the Volvo I ended up going with the Spark because it was almost brand new, had zero body damage, had BY FAR the least miles, got 30+ miles to the gallon, and it would be paid off on top of all of that. I was, unfortunately, thinking with my stoner brain and could only imagine having $100 less to smoke every month. But hey, I made some good memories in the 3 years I had that Spark til I blew the head gasket and almost threw a rod driving it to Florida from Texas with almost no breaks 😂 I wasn't much of a car guy back then so I try to give myself a little grace, but I would love to have that Neon these days 😮💨
After owning 2 I completely agree. The first had already had 15k put into it and the second one I put 8k in from stock. I don't agree that it takes a lot of money to get this monster up to par but it definitely takes some know how. I see these poor things everywhere and they are always vacuum line and wiring spaghetti under the hood because some idiot thought he could RUclips it.
Had a buddy that never modified the motor and only did underbody and transmission work on it to help reliability, he gave it too his kid as a first car, the kid didn’t do anything either but school bus drivers drinking Hennessy can make a srt4 look like a tuna can really fast. Kid made it out all right bus driver is in prison for open warrants. Edit:Grammatical errors
Thats like the FG2 Civic Si. 06-08. You can hardly find stock unmolested examples because every teenager gets their hands on them and destroys them. I just picked an 06 up, bone stock Navi car never been modded with the very hard to find oem honda hfp body kit for 3500$. They actually made the people who bought them new sign a legal document saying they would abuse the hell out of it, and under no circumstances were they allowed to wax the paint or wash out road salt.

If you are buying an srt4, don't, buy a cobaltss with the lsd, from 2010. It is incredably modable, for reasonable cost. They can make 400hp reliably with the right mods. This is why the older 2.2/2.5s are better. They're not made of glass. I love the srt4 and the 2.0/2.4, but those older engines can make some serious power without as many reliability issues.

Dude is 100% correct. I have one and kept it stock. Awesome car!
20k was what they sold these for. Could you imagine how good one felt to drive off the lot?
I love how these shorts turned into you chilling on a chair to "I need to do stuff around the house bit still need to do shorts" vibe
Man mod the hell out of it. Blow the block then go to the junkyard.
That’s what I’m saying mine lasted for years with 500hp then bought another engine for $500, still kicking
@@Meatpopsicle999that’s how I feel about the wrx’s aswell hell the ej25 had been in production since the 80s you can pick one up for so cheap most people don’t even care to build an engine and would rather blow a motor once per year
Yes sir 👍👍👍😎😎😎😎🫡🫡🫡🫡🫡
My buddy and his Father owned nearly a dozen at one point. Even had a new old stock one with less than 20K kilometers from Canada. I always trashed him but thought the commitment was cool. My bro is kicking doors somewhere now. God bless him and his neon ass 🙏
I like these shorts, so much better then most channels just clipping parts of their longer videos.
Same with the cobalt. It's fun as it is out of the box, do the basic bolt ons and tune and you're in for a blast
I love your laundry shorts and would watch longer format of it too
this is true for about any car. if you need to replace items sure go for something more durable which is designed to handle more power, but dont go throwing new things in while ignoring basic maintenance
Maulers description of Elm St 3 is so good. I suck at concise descriptions so it’s super impressive.
hearing, “i’m talking subaru sti big money” is rough 😭
Those things had super low compression from the factory. Hard to believe they couldn’t take more boost reliably
They will take a lot of boost if the tune is right. A lot of kids ruined them and gave them a bad rap early because they were the cheapest fast car you could buy when they were newish.
The motor and internals were fine. The idiots who didn’t tune their car and starved them caused that
The ones I see on the road in Southern California are modded and/or trashed already 😢
I was waiting for him to walk into the other room to show us his SRT-4. 😂
In all seriousness, I drive into work at the same time every day, apparently at the same time as another dude, and I get to see it in all of its glory for 30 minutes a day.
Going to be a lot of lost knowledge on these cars soon, already seems that way
I've had mine rolling around at 450hp for 11 years, its my daily driver and runs great.
I drove one in 2020, a guy had converted it to hand controls so it was a skewed experience but it was fun regardless.
Real. I left mine alone. Had to sell it due to rust. Even stock it constantly had issues.
I had an SRT4 that put down 540whp. Fully built everything and rocked out for 6 years with no issues. But yeah, over $14K was spent to get it there. And the torque steer was downright dangerous! Fun car tho. Now I'm running a boosted Viper.
Oh boy you called it the Neon SRT-4 and not just the SRT-4. Thats fighting words to a Neon SRT-4 owner
Wasn't there the caliber srt 4 too?
Sure was buddy @@calvinlim9485
Gotta respect the upside down detergent bottle, you know that’s getting rinsed out too.
Do we want a full video?
Is the sky blue?
Is the grass green?
Never seen an NSX with that color combo. Now I want one even more 😅
Now this is the content I like to see
My lawn guy is so proud of getting one at auction. Upgraded turbo and 500+ HP lol.
My lawyer did the same thing lol
I don’t drive it in the snow it gets put up for winter the salt will make it die faster n I wanna be able to drive it for as long as I can
Drove an ek9 for a friend for about 700km, fell in love. He's a modifier with a whiff of stancing. I tried to hammer it to him. Do Not Ruin It
The neon r/t 5 speed was so much fun but it's a dodge they made a few crappy cars in those years to present.
To be fair 250hp out of something as "light" as the neon isnt terrible. Just a shame its a neon lmao
Yeah I mean 0-60 is 6 seconds even with rubbish tires it's not slow
@ozgurmehmet4258 the suspension being made out of bailing wire and coke cans will give out before you ever get to 60 anyway 🤣
The same as a modified Cobra Mustang
The engine has forged internals.
It was the only OK Neon that’s for sure lol.
We always messed with people and called Neons PT Cruisers and called PT Cruisers Neons.
My teacher at my high school mechanic class had a big turbo built bottom end srt4 making like 400 iirc. thing was so cool I got a ride in it one time
Had a buddy that never modified the motor and only did underbody and transmission work on it to help reliability, he gave it too his kid as a first car, the kid didn’t do anything either but school bus drivers drinking Hennessy can make a srt4 look like a tuna can really fast. Kid made it out all right bus driver is in prison for open warrants.
Edit:Grammatical errors
They’re a unicorn anymore. They’re all blown, destroyed, or rotting away. They used to be literally everywhere. Now its really rare to see one
I always thought neons were so cute! My mom had one in the 90s but I doubt it was an srt4.
Somebody say SRT4? 😂😂
I loved my SRT4 when I had it. I didn't crazy mod it, and kept everything reversible. I had an OG 03 with a glass transmission.
Same goes for Miata’s! With the exception of a proper boost setup lol
I like these types of shorts.
Thats a midwest basement laundry room right there
@@DaDaDo661 ope.
So it would seem, but I'm pretty sure he's from the upper east coast/New England.
Except for the dude in Northern California with the “Mopar ?” Badges with the dump valve that nearly made me deaf
Sir as a used appliance salesman, I commend you for not overloading your machines!
I like the chevy cobalt ss. The base cobalt are ugly but the cobalt ss is a car I really wana get
Thats like the FG2 Civic Si. 06-08. You can hardly find stock unmolested examples because every teenager gets their hands on them and destroys them. I just picked an 06 up, bone stock Navi car never been modded with the very hard to find oem honda hfp body kit for 3500$. Car makes 197hp stock and redlines at 8k and sounds glorious from the stock exhaust especially when VTEC kicks in. My dad has an 06 in his garage, navi summer tire car with 22k original miles. Probably the nicest one in existence.
Nice joists!
Also they’re WAYYYY cheaper to build and more reliable than a Subaru.
Subaru engines are literal junk compared to the srt4.
Was always a fan of this car my mom had the cheap Plymouth car served her well would have lasted longer had she taken care of it.
😂 just cause you blew yours up doesn't mean you can't make 500hp reliable car for not much money.
I miss my 2005 SRT-4 with a MOPAR Stage 3 Kit.
I see what you did there with the (sorta on point) dryer door sound effect
They actually made the people who bought them new sign a legal document saying they would abuse the hell out of it, and under no circumstances were they allowed to wax the paint or wash out road salt.
Funny, my srt-4 is pushing 575whp and has been reliable the entire time i have owned it. Everyone has an opinion, and yours isn't valid.
Named it the fastest production car under 20k at its time❤❤❤😊
Last year I remembered the srt4 existed. And I thought "where did they all go? I used to see them all the time." Since then I've been paying super close attention looking for them I saw one this whole year... in the wild in Tennessee. I havent seen any up here in NE ohio.. they're all gone
I know the guy who owns the most Dodge Neon SRT4s in the USA and he has a modded one, a classic registered one, and a daily driver.
Everything in this video is correct. Doesn't stop him though. He is the reason you can't find stock ones for sale. Parts hulk go brrr.
Watching this reminded me that I need to go put the wash on
If you find one changes are that it’s already modified. Dodge needs cars like this to revive their line up.
If I remember correctly they came from the factory with stage 1,2 and 3 power upgrades.
He’s not lying 😊
In only found two very clean low mileage unmodified srt-4s on Autotrader in the entire country so this guys right
If you are buying an srt4, don't, buy a cobaltss with the lsd, from 2010. It is incredably modable, for reasonable cost. They can make 400hp reliably with the right mods. Probably already has 3 bar map sensors. Buy an efr 7063, hpfp, intake, downpipe, e47, Saab injector, and hp tuners. The car will make 350hp 400ftlbs all day if you don't lug it in 3rd. The trans can be replaced with the f23 for shorter ratios.
Idk what a dodge neon is but it sounds like one of the midsize dodges at the worksite that never die. Like stratus caliber intrepid. There's a lot of medium sized dodges that refuse die to die like the ppl who drive them
Soon to be classic, I already see them and go woah a survivor!
This is why the older 2.2/2.5s are better. They're not made of glass. I love the srt4 and the 2.0/2.4, but those older engines can make some serious power without as many reliability issues.
Fun fact OG writing for F&F had the neon as the hero car 😅
Saw one 4 weeks ago and i was more amazed than seeing a countach😂
I had one that definitely wasn’t stock , and I remember feeling jealous when I saw a mint condition one. It even had the stock intake 💀 you would think these cars came from factory with a CAI with how rare the OEM on is.
Had one about 3 months back at my body shop that was totaled out because the owner drove over a parking stop going 30. Had a few bolt ons under the hood but was pretty much stock.
My neon is best neon because *Angry* *Headlights*
