- The angry bubbly sport sedan that seems to be pissed off at the world. The Dodge Neon SRT-4 was one of the cars that every high schooler wanted as soon as they turned 16. This turbocharged 2.4l machine was designed and built to be the domestic answer to the import tuning scene. Fullweezy 35 That’s fake news. Mitsubishi had nothing to do in terms of design/engineering of the Chrysler Turbo I/II/III/IIII engines. Mitsub also had nothing to do the SRT4 A855 or PT A853 engines.

2020 now and I still have my 2003 SRT-4 which I bought brand new in 2003. Haven't found a good reason yet to get rid of it. Certainly don't want to sell it to some ricer who will hack it with mods and probably wrap it around a tree.

To tell you the truth fast furious I like cause got young people into cars but I don’t like cause made the car game more trendy like if they have it then I have to have it smh. All the stuff on fast and furious even in Atlanta we were doing that before the movie came out cause we were the home of nopi and anyone remember nopi was the home shop to get all your tuner parts and we had races everyone would meet in these parking lots this was before the coil over crazy and air suspension.i just say this man that I want people to customize car that are not common that’s what keeps the car game fun japan does it . @@deangelos1980 the other thing is they've been mostly sold and resold and eventually some kid either wrecks it or blows the engine or junks it because they fucked it up too much and can't figure out how to fix it. I never saw the point in putting 500+ HP through FWD. The car is fast enough for me as is and having owned it for 17 years and over 215k miles it owes me nothing and it's still a fun car to drive. My wife has a Solstice GXP, similar power and RWD and convertible so that's a nice change up and still fast. My other car is an 08 Honda Accord 4 cyl. Not fast at all but runs perfect, good on gas, roomy, comfortable, and great for a long trip and then I don't have to worry that I'm driving a 17 year old car.

SRT4 was a great little car. Bought one for my wife new and swapped out the orca wing for a standard wing lowered on eibachs with some after market rims. Car looked great and ripped. Dang thing wen't 13.8 in the 1/4 bone stock in 2005.

@@MsHannahLynn02 That is a (most likely SRT swapped)1st gen (1995 to 1999) neon, with an SRT gauge cluster, not a 2gn. Hence why the dash is different, assuming you have an SRT/2gn neon
@@MsHannahLynn02 the interior is a 1GN with the ACR "delete" kit. Plastic covers for where the radio air bags and ac control's go.

Thomas Dusynski not yet you mean even with the hurst shifter you’ll get a grind it’s the cheap synchros they used it has nothing to do with the shifter itself I owned a 04 srt4 at that time dodge/chrysler had trouble financially and they didn’t have a big budget to build the car, hence the rear roll up windows and open diff in 2003.

put the 3rd gear extender in mine a week after I bought it and didn't have any issues the entire time I owned it.

A few of my friends are SRT4 fanatics, their place has a total of 5 of them, in various states of (dis) assembly. They're pretty quick overall given what they paid for them.

Fun fact: 6:41 is a 1st gen neon with a srt4 instrument cluster and Mopar stage 2/3 toys switches.
I agree. The quick spooling mopar stage 3 kit with around high 300 - low 400whp makes for a quick and responsive street car.

I've had two regular 2nd Gen Neons, and still really want to get my hands on an SRT-4 someday.
As someone who owned one for 12 years as well as it's PT Cruiser equivalent and sold it for a house, I miss and want it back. It wasn't good at one thing but it did everything! Drag, autoX, track days, and rallyX.
My SRT-4 is still a blast. I bought mine used, back in the day, several years old. Have never regretted it. I think I bought it with 42K
Now, has about 154K. I can't say enough about it, and driving 40 miles, one way to work, as my commute.
Nobody, and I mean Nobody, on the highway at the time, would out-pull me. Still have the 3rd synch. gear that I intended to install, which I never did, and have never had reason to, either, sitting, in the plastic seal, on my dresser. Seriously fun, little car. Will I keep it? Still, all stock.

You have no idea how badly I want a 2005 Dodge Neon SRT-4 in Orange Blast. I ended up getting a Chrysler Neon, but my heart never forgot the SRT-4.
Didn't even mention the best part, just like the MK4 Supra's the Neon SRT4's engine is way over built. They are well known to handle 500+ Hp on stock internals.....
Think about this, the dealerships of the time (03-05) were bolting on 100-150+ Hp kits aka "Stage 3" to a stock engine! A Standard SRT4 was underrated at 220Hp and the Stage 3 Kits were capable of 350+ Hp. All that being done by the Dodge dealerships themselves......
That's why you gotta love good ol' dodge
Every single car ever is capable of 500+ on stock eternals with bolt ons. The supra and neon aren't special.

as an srt4 owner myself, i was reading up on vaccuum lines, diagrams and such and i came across an ancient LIVE FAQ that the mopar crew behind the designing of the car participated in on the srt forum i think, someone asked about the back seat rolldown windows, and it wasnt actually designed that way for costs, it was simply because the window switch/motor couldnt fit back there. not enough room, its too narrow, take the back seat door panels off and see for yourself. not much room at all, the car is exceptionally narrow. lol

Bought a 2005 in 06. Installed mopar stg3 made 350hp. Rolling in 2nd gear would not hook on the street. It was fun. But now there all parked next to eagle talons in the junkyard.

Very reliable. Just like any car, maintain it properly and it’s plenty solid. Buy a beat down example and be prepared for headaches.

@@njshift Yup. I had one and it was bulletproof. I never threw crazy big power at it admittedly, but, it did have mods and a tune and she ran strong. Miss it. I'm seriously considering looking for another but so many of them are getting beat on right now. Hard to find a clean-ish one that, like you said, won't give me headaches.

I had one. I was 22 years old and delivering pizza for Dominos. I had a black '01 and a blue '03 Neon. Not at the same time. I just seemed to keep upgrading to newer and better Dodge Neons for some reason. I traded the blue '03 on a blue '04 SRT4. I had it for three weeks, zipping around town delivering gross pizza and wings to people in record time. But then I finished school and got the job I always wanted. I moved out of the sticks to a bigger city. I got a nice apartment. I met a bunch of new peoole. The new job was a corporate one in an office. And in three short weeks, I was just a different person. I had grown up a little and suddenly hated that little car. I sold it and bought a Nissan Titan.

Owned a 2009 Cobalt SS Turbo with the stage 2 set up from factory and boy was that little thing the most fun I ever spent money on Lol tough reliable little car with plebty of power and a narrow but plentiful aftermarket. Sold it when I noticed some issues because daily toys are not a good idea and get expensive quicker than their 0 to 60 times... Lmao but if you haven't done one on the Cobalt SS or at least haven't drove one I suggest doing so. Almost no turbo lag in the later models and the supercharged ones from the first gen were just sexy sounding and would suck you into the seat. Lol drove a modified one at 16 supercharged and good golly got dang did it move. Bought the turbo one at 23 and enjoyed it for awhile. It was more up to date and had more bells and whistles, sunroof, better radio, etc. The responce and all felt more electronic if that makes sense but either one is a killer ride for the under 10k budget. I paid just under that for my 09 with 40k miles from the original owner who took it to like cars and coffee type of events.
How bout the PT Cruiser GT Manual
A great car, I beat on mine (minimal bolt on 260 mustang dyno whp) for 9 years with only a blown head gasket which was my fault!
Plus they flew under the cops radar.

My cousins srt4 did 12.6 with stock turbo and about 115 passes in the drag strip. I loce mine till and old lady did a dead stop and i crashed it but still alive.3rd gear is crap on it and got lucky and got a dcr syncro.but for 4000$ its pretty good.

The sounds it produces is not angelic. It's always backfiring when you add an aftermarket exhaust. The only car I know that does it at low rpm
Had an 05 SRT4 stage 3 used to hurt there feelings with that car most of the time..

Don't forget the Caliber SRT-4... super dope and quick too. Got 360whp 400 wtq stock turbo out of mine.

Not every srt4. It was due to excessive factory sealant clogging the oiling holes on the input shaft. Those who performed frequent trans flushes early in the srt4’s life have significantly less risk of the issue.
good luck...every SRt4 in tis day and age has been MOLESTED by a kid or person who has had ZERo respect or care for it....i owned 3 of them and i had to dum alot of cash into each due to lack of maintenance and sheer stupidity of the previous owner...if you are die hard about owning one then find one with VERY VERY low kms and one or two owner...stay AWAY from the HEAVILY MODIFIED or hell even modified AT ALL ones...these cars dont like being modded...they liek to break fast when ppl start messing with them.
Frankly...if your die hard domestic guy and want a 4cyl tuner car that wont cost u a arm or leg "caugh caugh any new 4cyl car this day and age." then i would go fo rthe cobalt ss over the srt4 having owned both. THAT and there is a bigger aftermarket for the cobalt where as the srt4 aftermaket has died off
Scypheroth i know mine is needing some fixing. But its not too bad thankfully, mainly tie rods and a wheel bearing. But im glad to have such a unique car (im one of two owners in my city 😆)
Everything you said is wrong... these cars are great for power, they will handle 400+whp for years. And they love mods, it's just many kids get them and don't know what they are doing. And weather your talkiky supercharged or turbo cobalt, neither compare to the srt4 as far as a drag race platform. The direct injection on the turbo cobalts make everything more expensive and difficult
Same with DSM's, they got bad rap because of ghetto mods .
