- Sikorsky S-61 C-FQNG of Vancouver Island Helicopters is seen starting up and taking off from CZNL in Nelson, British Columbia. The Sikorsky S61 is one impressive helicopter, and I was really happy to catch the engine startup of this one!

These used to be our bog standard birds for our UK Coastguard 999 service. They all sounded scary and mean in the air you could tell an S61 from any other helicopter. You could see and hear these coming over a mile away with that noise. That angry/evil sounding rasp off the tail rotor was what made these sound so intimidating. The size of them and the noise they made were incredible.
Such an outstanding heli, haven't seen one so far.
I was so happy to get some footage of this one, the S-61 is an impressive machine. I hope you can spot one soon!
Wonderful sound and close up video of the awesome Sikorsky, Jesse 🥰👏👍👍
Thanks so much Volker, I appreciate it my friend. This Sikorsky was awesome to see.
That go entering and leaving the rotor arc at low rpm is out of his mind.
Year Manufactured in 1960 - What a classic & great catch Jesse 👍😎
What a classic, this old Sikorsky is looking great for its age. Thanks Ed!
@@TheHDAviation I'm really glad you caught it 👍😎
Great video. I think I've seen a few large Sikorsky's like these at air shows. A pilot told me the fuel burn runs around 1000 lbs. an hour.
Thanks, this one was really neat to see. Ouch, you wouldn't want to be responsible for that fuel bill!
Super catch of this Classic 👍😎
Really awesome job on timing and catching this beauty! I love that fresh turbine whool up sound during the rotor start up!
beautiful video of engine start and take off from this great looking helicopter, hope those fires are getting under control, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Rob, this S-61 was so cool to see. One I had wanted to get a start-up of for a long time. Thanks for watching!
Great video and Sound big like
Thanks so much, this S-61 did sound great!
Outstanding catch! Love my Sikorskys!!
Thanks, I was so happy to catch this one. The S-61 is one awesome machine!
Just outstanding! What a great catch! Awesome job on the camera work Sir!
Getting ready to drop some Bambis. Good luck to our friends up North with these huge wildland fires. Stay safe.
Thanks so much Matt, this S-61 was so cool to see. It was impressive to see the size of the bucket this one carries.
Fantastic video!!!
I always watch your videos with big pleasure 👍👍👍
Thanks so much my friend, I appreciate it!
Wow! This one is such a beauty! It looks really retro, but I’ve never seen it… Great video my friend! Keep it up 👍👍😀😀
What an stunning footage my friend!🤩 Very worrying how badly the air has been clouded by the forest fires😪 I really love the mighty Sea King! Hope to see on of the German ones before they retires😬 Thumbs up and greetings from Germany👍🇩🇪😉
Genau!
@@MovieSpottingBerlin die deutschen werden dieses Jahr angeblich ausgemustert, soweit ich weiß😬
Thanks Martin, it was a real treat to get to see this old Sikorsky in action. I really hope you can catch one of the German Sea King's while they are still flying.
@@TheHDAviation you're welcome! I hope so too, thank you! Yesterday I've seen my first NH-90 Sea Lion, it's the replacement for the Sea King! ;)
I really like turning on the engine ❤
Nice capturing 😍
Thanks, this S-61 did sound great firing up!
Fantastic master piece catch. Really impressive e to see this on action. Great video
Thanks very much Jerome, this S-61 is definitely one of my top catches!
Fantastic capture and footage!
Stay safe!
Thanks very much, this S-61 was so cool to see!
Aww man I liked her old paint job. 😢
I wish I would have seen it in its old paint, bet it looked good.
@@TheHDAviation Flew her a lot with the green yellow and white livery when CHI leased it.
What a fantastic catch.
I would love to get one someday.
Thanks so much, I was so happy to catch this S-61. I really hope you can catch one some day soon!
Beautiful capture my friend😀 Greetings from Japan 👏
Thanks so much!
Great catch, Hope the fires aren't as bad as the ones in Quebec.
Thanks, this S-61 was so cool to see. Luckily they aren't bad near Nelson yet, but there are many bad ones across the country already. It looks like it could be a long, bad fire season.
Awesome capture, mate! So spectacular! :D
WOW absolutely amazing video Jesse! This Sikorsky S-61 is really an amazing sight to behold. What a magnificent and beautiful masterpiece of a helicopter. Like 153 from me! Cheers Matt
Thanks so much Matt! This classic Sikorsky was so cool to see, definitely one of my favourite helicopter catches from CZNL. We'll soon see what this years wildfire season will bring into Nelson!
Awesome catch and video!
Thanks so much, I was happy to catch this one.
*Excellent 🚁*
Thanks for watching!
Muy bueno el video,gran trabajo!!!
Thanks so much my friend!
Everything about this is awesome! Such a cool bird, amazing sound. Well done!
Thanks so much Kelly, this awesome helicopter was very cool to see!
@@TheHDAviation you are very welcome! Keep up the great work!
Great video, I love how those thin rotors can lift up a massive helicopter like that. Looks pretty smoky in Nelson, the fires sure are unfortunate but at least we get to see some cool aircraft!
Thanks Seb! So true, it is amazing that these thin blades can lift this massive machine. They must be able to take quite the force.
12 year working with s61a.. miss the sound.
Awesome footage mate! Very interesting to see this take-off from up close. Beautiful looking heli, although the reason it's flying is something very sad. Nice work anyway!
Thanks so much Mylos! This old Sikorsky was super cool to see, one awesome machine.
Great video👏👏👏
Thanks a lot!

Hope they're able to get those fires under control up there!
Luckily there aren't any fires near Nelson yet, but there are a lot of bad wild fires all across the country. Looks like it could be a long/bad season!
Let's hope not! All the best...
Seems like every part of Canada has wildfires right now. Meanwhile it is still raining here in NorCal.
Ya, looks like it's going to be a long/bad wildfire season for sure. I hope we get a bit of rain up here soon!
So amazing prop sound! Also in action for the German government.
This S-61 did sound great, it was awesome to see. I hope you can catch one of the German Sea Kings!

Wow..😮
This one was cool to see!
That smoke isn't looking too good 😥Hopefully they can put out the fires soon... Nevertheless, nice video capturing this takeoff, I just love that sound!
Thanks! Luckily, this one was from last summer. We've been lucky in Nelson so far this year, and haven't had any fires nearby yet. There are a lot of major fires all over Canada right now though, looks like it could be a bad year.
Wow!
Love the S-61!

Thanks very much for watching, this Sikorsky was great to see!
Is that smoke I see in and around Nelson? It's fire season again.
wow
Espero que logren apagar los incendios y saludos
Thanks my friend, it looks like it will be a long wildfire season in Canada this year!
Wow, great shot! What's your camera/camera specs to avoid strobe or wagon wheel effect on the rotors?
Thanks! I shot this on the Panasonic VX870 and it was just set to auto.
@@TheHDAviation Man, that's crazy. Is that the default mic too?
What’s that used for exactly?
This one was being used for wildfire fighting.
A S-61 starting up with a Huey in the background, doesn't get much better....
Good eye with the Huey! We had four 212's working out of Nelson at the time I filmed this one, that was pretty cool to see.
Why do they start up with the rotor brake engaged?
I think that is the APU firing up for the first minute or so before the blades start spinning.
@@TheHDAviation The rapid acceleration of the rotor seems to tell us that the engines are already turning, and the brake is released.
The rotor accelerates faster if the engines are already at flight idle which makes it safer because there is a risk of a boom strike if the rotor is spinning at low speed especially on gusty days.
Ahhh....that makes sense. Don't need any boom strikes!
@@nocalsteve
@@TheHDAviationI'm no S61 expert so please correct me if I am wrong but I don't think these would have a turbine APU? I wouldn't think they would be a large enough aircraft to have one. Airbus and Boeing passenger aircraft would but heli's would be too small. So I would assume one of the two main Rolls Royce turbine engines that power the aircraft would count as the APU. They sound as if the turbine engines start and run with the rotors completely stopped as an idle 0% throttle. Then once they are ready they sound as if they increase the throttle from 0% and power them up a little as they release the rotor brake. Then once the rotors are spinning on full but the aircraft is still idle they power it up to 100% to lift it off the ground. I'm just guessing
Wow! Amazing shots of an amazing machine! Another great video.
Thanks a lot, this old Sikorsky was awesome to see!
