Here's the breakdown: The MC1R gene controls melanin production. In people with brown, black, or blonde hair, this gene functions normally. In redheads, a mutation in the MC1R gene leads to production of pheomelanin instead of melanin, resulting in red hair and fair skin. This same MC1R gene is somehow linked to pain receptors in the brain. The mutation may affect how these receptors respond to anesthesia. Studies suggest redheads: Need about 20% more general anesthesia for surgery. Are more resistant to local anesthetics like lidocaine. May be more sensitive to certain types of pain (like heat and cold).
Glad someone posted. Even as someone auburn haired with 2 red haired grandmothers I’ve had anesthesiologist freak out when I was like dude I’m not asleep yet.

This whole segment shows the incredible chemistry between the 3 of them and how they are constantly building on each other - Gourley with his X-Men quip, “Finally”, and Sona bringing it up Arroyo’s role in the episode. None of it scripted or feels forced . Just incredible
I absolutely love how Jose already knew what he had to do even before Conan mentioned it. He was probably already dressed up in his doctor’s outfit, waiting for that phone to start ringing.
I appreciate that Conan was dying to tell the spot-weld joke even though Sona and Matt were interrupting it. So, he quickly altered the joke so he could still tell it without it being awkward and it killed.
Damn- the part about him talking about welding... This man can just spit out an entire stand up set off the top of his head when other comics would take months to be half as funny as him. Comedy gold!
I was working and just happened to refresh my youtube and the show had posted freshly (like 20 min). Had to go on lunch and watch it. It was the most bizarre thing I'd witnessed in years and it was friggin GOLD. The commitment was awesome. Great job downing the "wings of death"
Absolutely, I also love that you can tell by the way Conan was communicating with his eyes 8:36 that he set Matt up perfectly for that joke. Just all around amazing comedy prowess and chemistry with this group
That’s honestly what also made the entire thing so good. Conan didn’t just focus on the comedy, he also made sure that he was answering Sean’s questions intelligently and sincerely. His entire monologue about finding comedy everywhere while he had spittle running down his cheeks and hot sauce slathered all over his face was both inspiring and hilarious.
It was, and will be remembered as _the best_ Hot Ones episode to ever air. Conan _killed_ that performance so good. Of course all the antics were hilarious to no avail, but at one point he even went meta with it. Sean was just in awe, congratulating Conan for "commiting to the bit", and Conan's answer was _THIS IS NOT A BIT! DON'T SAY I'M "COMMITING TO A BIT" THIS IS WHO I AM!!_ Just... incredible holding all that together. Also the self irony in the end was just 😙🤌🏻 mwahh. _"I didn't just take in horrible chemicals and go over board with it to be relevant to people 50 years younger than me...!!"_ Superb comedy.
Post Malone's was pretty good too. Bobby Lee pretty much crapped his pants. There were a few other wild ones on hot ones. But only one or two people outwardly handled the pain the way Conan did.
Conan, you are the BEST! You're a class act and so devoted to your craft + passion in so many ways! I've been watching you since the early 90s while learning English as a kid and I continue to look forward to enjoying all your new projects! 💓

You had the best interview on Hot Ones. Something about your face being bright fluorescent red while you're covering your pain and acting arrogant was one of the highlights of my life. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. I remember you coming out on Late Night physically ill and yet you still did your job. We have nothing on you. Thank you!
Conan elevated Hot Ones to the pinnacle of what it could be. Conan managed to present both the most "extreme" response to the hot sauces and continue with a hilarious skit seemingly as if the sauces had no effect. He also managed to be a good interviewee and be profound in moments. Usually you either get people that can barely make it through, or show very little response because they can deal with the sauce, but might not interview well. I don't even know where HO goes on from here.
I've been watching Hot Ones for years and it's one of the most consistently funny and interesting shows I've ever watched. It's so good and never disappoints. Conan O' Brian, who's in his 60's and has nothing to prove, goes on Hot Ones and absolutely kills it. My wife and I laughed so hard, our kids thought there was something wrong with us. Somehow, with the number of amazing episodes there have been, it's one of the best ever.
Man, Conan, I just want to thank you. Late Night got me through so many angsty teen years. Seeing you on Hot Ones was a highlight of my adult years. Best interview EVER. 😂
I just want to say, seeing you on the Hot Ones episode inspired me to get to know you. It was incredible....unbelievable in fact. I have been on a binge of your content all week and weekend. You're a funny dude.
'but those are things that you do so that your children will never look you in the eyes again'. - This is why I never end a conan clip early. Everything he says is gold.
The ending of hot ones and how Conan entertained everyone is what made me a real fan of his now. Now because of that hot ones video alone im definitely gonna check out his newest project. Idk why I never thought Conan was funny until now but man he is perfect right now. I do love hosts but I'm glad seeing Conan in the spotlight and shining. He deserves all of this amazing glory for his contributions to comedy.
"I never thought Conan was funny until now but man he is perfect right now" - Grasps chest and looks up at the sky, "Elizabeth! This is the big one!" I remember watching Conan's show back in Jr. High and thinking he was one of the funniest guys of all time. This was back in the days of In the Year 2000 and Pimpbot.
Gorley’s Tom Cruise analogy was perfectly put. Conan dismissed it but the point is valid: both will fully commit and go to the most extreme lengths to entertain.
No wonder they meshed so well with that car ride parody video, which could potentially have been the dullest thing ever. Full commitment on both sides. 😂
So, now that Conan has, again, gone to that extreme, on hot ones, the universe should naturally bring Tom Cruise and Conan together, on Conan's podcast to discuss their common drive to entertain audiences to the utmost! Or, even better, Tom Cruise does Hot Ones THEN Conan's podcast? OR! Tom Cruise, Sean Evans and Conan eat hot wings on Conan's podcast! Yes?! Lol
Conan was, is and forever will be one of the funniest, wittiest, most sympathetic, smartest, most generous people in the entertainment industry. The Hot Ones episode he was in is already legendary.
Thanks for the welding education, Conan. I'm learning to weld. As a valuable skill to build my own metal framed stuff. I'll take this advice into consideration and suggest it to my welding instructor.
The redhead thing about being resistant to drugs is 100% true. My father is an anesthesiologist, and was talking to me about this when i asked him about his work back in the day. It fascinated me then. Basically, they need a bit more than the average person to stay asleep with anesthesia. I'm not sure if that is for all drugs, but definitely for what we commonly use for anesthesia.
@@Seabeams The sensation of spicy is just pain. There is no taste bud for it, just our pain receptors. So it's just about pain tolerance. As Conan says, he'll do anything for a laugh even at the detriment of his body. He powered through it, or he's used to pain enough to ignore it. I'm not sure if being a redhead affects their sensitivity to spicy food, but that would be interesting to learn if that does affect things.

Didn't know Conan was a fecal engineer. So multi-talented.
He’s multi “feceted”.
You mean a human soil engineer
He doesn't weld so well, but he's very affordable.
I understood that reference 😂@@SARYM911
“Fecal Engineer.” 🤣😂🤣 Hilarious!! Bravo!!
Thank you for asking the REAL, important post-Hot Ones questions that everyone thinks about, but are too afraid to ask the celebrities lol
Like the time Hot Ones LITERALLY killed Coolio...
A BEAM of the whitest light you've ever seen come out...
The technical term for this phenomenon is "ring burn"
I’m going to pretend you were referring to his wedding ring irritation
@@Seabeams Yes, a ring burned just like it did on his wedding night.
After hearing the Podcast for so long, this is the first time seeing Sona, all I can say is, Conan brings the joke and she brings a laughter that makes this show so awesome. Love you Sona ❤
This might be the most unintentionally motivational things I've ever seen. When asked if there was a moment when he thought it might be a bad idea he said, "I had already decided I was going to do it."
Set a goal, visualize it, and stick to it no matter the cost to oneself. I think pain and suffering really is the great conundrum of human existence and if we learn to tap into it for energy we become unstoppable. David Goggins is a great speaker on this. Cheers 🍻
@@Eserr7856 Right, I see a lot of threads from people that are asking, "How do you get motivation to workout" or something similar. The secret is that people aren't actually motivated. They don't want to do things, but they do them anyway because they already DECIDED it was going to happen. Motivation comes after.
@@zuzusuperfly8363 exactly 💯. As the popular stoicist Ryan Holiday teaches, "if you want momentum, you'll have to create it right now by getting up and getting started"
Yeah! Total dedication to his craft. Like, commit!
@@johnlucas6683 Commitment is so much more valuable than motivation. People don't talk enough about that.
The doctor character was comedy gold. Including him doubled the fun is an already great episode.
btw i think ive commented on every hot ones episode since the beginning. conan. i had been waiting for you to be a guest for YEARS. thank you. can now die happy
Which episode is your favorite?
Here's the breakdown:
The MC1R gene controls melanin production.
Studies suggest redheads:
Need about 20% more general anesthesia for surgery.
Are more resistant to local anesthetics like lidocaine.
May be more sensitive to certain types of pain (like heat and cold).
So basically he should've felt more of the spiciness.
Glad someone posted. Even as someone auburn haired with 2 red haired grandmothers I’ve had anesthesiologist freak out when I was like dude I’m not asleep yet.
Hydrocodone makes me crazy, does absolutely nothing for me, but make me manic
Good post. From a university professor, cell biology
@@thadofalltradesI’m not a redhead and that happened to me when I took hydrocodone for the first time. I thought I was dying. My head felt like it was going to detach from my body and float away. I was going insane.
This whole segment shows the incredible chemistry between the 3 of them and how they are constantly building on each other - Gourley with his X-Men quip, “Finally”, and Sona bringing it up Arroyo’s role in the episode. None of it scripted or feels forced . Just incredible
I’m so glad that I watched the Hot Ones episode first, but that and this episode of the podcast will 😂I’m either order

Conan O'Brien is like the gift that keeps on giving. The man is hilarious!
I looked like an absolute maniac laughing at the welding bit whilst walking down the street.
What kind of maniac watches a video while wallking down the street
@@Talisman09 it's a podcast
@Talisman09, what kind of idiot doesn't realize this is a podcast?

What God said.
I had to stop driving tbh when I heard it on the podcast. 😂😂😂
It was a legendary episode of Hot ones. Never expected anything less from the best late night host of all time.
I was working and just happened to refresh my youtube and the show had posted freshly (like 20 min). Had to go on lunch and watch it. It was the most bizarre thing I'd witnessed in years and it was friggin GOLD. The commitment was awesome. Great job downing the "wings of death"
Conan is a legend
Was wondering
RIP
"Finally"
That's some perfect comedic timing from Matt.
Absolutely, I also love that you can tell by the way Conan was communicating with his eyes 8:36 that he set Matt up perfectly for that joke. Just all around amazing comedy prowess and chemistry with this group
Conan goes for the joke and never backs down. Respect. 🙌🏼
honestly my fav part was the end when everyone cheered and Coco just looked around in awe as if he had made it to the top of Olympus.
I loved how earnestly he continued to answer the questions despite how insane he was being in every other way.
DON'T SAY I'M "COMMITING TO A BIT" THIS IS WHO I AM!!_
Just... incredible holding all that together. Also the self irony in the end was just 😙🤌🏻 mwahh.
_"I didn't just take in horrible chemicals and go over board with it to be relevant to people 50 years younger than me...!!"_
Superb comedy.
I always love seeing Conan look at Sona during one of his bits, seeing how hard she is laughing, and trying to make it worse.
Conan Lost His Mind After The Bomb💯😂
You could tell he was channeling all his pain into that nuttiness. It was either act crazy or show your pain and he chose the former.
@@McP1mpin Also I think there's a point where spice that hot straight up makes you a bit delirious.
Nobody ever leaves the Hot Ones gauntlet unscathed. It's either you suffer on screen, or you get off-screened like Coolio lol
His Hot Ones episode has over 8 million views which is like 8x the average of recent episodes. Great Job
Nobody will ever beat Conan's performance in taking on the sauces dead on...nobody. It was incredible to watch.
Post Malone's was pretty good too. Bobby Lee pretty much crapped his pants. There were a few other wild ones on hot ones. But only one or two people outwardly handled the pain the way Conan did.
Deserves an Emmy
Conan, you are the BEST! You're a class act and so devoted to your craft + passion in so many ways! I've been watching you since the early 90s while learning English as a kid and I continue to look forward to enjoying all your new projects! 💓
"FINALLY" Matt is an under rated genius
☝🏼☝🏼☝🏼
funniest one liner i’ve heard in months
he is not, we all know how great of a genius he is comedy wise!
“and how did it manifest itself?”
Thank you, Matt!
That was impeccable timing 😂
CALL THE WIFE is my new favourite quote, superb episode.
“Spot welding”!!😂😂😂
That bit positively KILLED! 🤣🤣
Best episode of Hot Ones ever. Seriously, it was an absolute masterclass in comedy and complete recklessness. I had to watch it again with the mrs, and I was howling laughing as much that time as the first ^^ Absolutely brilliant.
I think I had more tears in my eyes than the average hot ones guest, after he put that first wing in his pocket.
You haven't watched all of them then lol
@@DisorderedArray I broke down after the second one :D
Disagree. I couldn't watch the whole thing. It was kinda sad watching a grown man acting obnoxious because he's so desperate for attention.
Conan needs an outlet for the avant-garde comedy he is capable of.
Nothing beats Sona’s laugh. Sometimes just hearing it makes me crack up even if I wasn’t laughing at the bit.
It's the laugh of someone that's never worked a day in their life but still gets paid 💵💵💵
@@londonoverground if you're this hateful about the people on the show why watch it?
@@-Teague- how is that a rebuttal to my point? Are you 4?
@@londonovergroundIt’s a sign of emotional intelligence to recognize how unnecessary it is to randomly put down a lady you don’t know and have no concept of the responsibilities of. I don’t think a 4 year old is capable of that. Are you?
It’s annoying and obnoxious
Conan was so nice to have Sean on his Hot Ones appearance, he UNDENIABLY stole the show.
One of the funniest Conan moments of all time. I love how Conan always goes for it. I shot a few promos with him and he always goes all out. Conan washing his desk to Pour Some Sugar on Me was one.
That's the hardest I've seen Sona laugh 🤣
Conan shoving the half-eaten wings in his pocket cracked me every time!
Best Hot Ones episode ever!!! (and I've seen them all)
You had the best interview on Hot Ones.
If that had any artistic integrity they would end it here.
Where did you graduate from medical school? Dr. Arroyo - 1998 😂😂😂😂 man that got me..
Somehow, with the number of amazing episodes there have been, it's one of the best ever.
conan's brain is writing 7 different shows in 7 different genres at any given moment. LMFAO
Man, Conan, I just want to thank you. Late Night got me through so many angsty teen years. Seeing you on Hot Ones was a highlight of my adult years. Best interview EVER. 😂
He probably needed that luxe bidet
It's a milk bidet. Half and half maybe.
Great for the mouth as well
@@johnlee7164 Not strong enough. Need to bring in the water buffalo to get it straight from the source.
one of Jordan Schlansky's various tasks was to source Conan a Toto bidet after Hot Ones.
I concur. One of his best ad plugs on the podcast was for a Bidet... It's a segway from the pit of hell and should be revisited.
Best thing about Conan is that amazing comics/people (mostly underrated) gravitates around him, this time Dr. Arroyo.
The best thing about Conan is the people he knows? Wow gee what a great compliment
Legend has it, he now walks backward into danger.
"And those are the things you do so your children never look you in the eye" made me burst out laughing (': you're so unserious ❤
You should watch conan without border clips they're hilarious
You have a lot of Conan Remotes to catch up on.
He was arguably the greatest talent on The Simpsons writing staff and created some of the best episodes.
@@harrydavey9884 You can just watch those episodes and go, "Yup, that's a Conan joke!" Same goes for SNL skits back in the day.
Yes?! Lol
I laughed so hard when you started putting the wings in your pocket to save for later. Very funny stuff.
2:07 Sona goes full Italian mode
The redhead thing about being resistant to drugs is 100% true. My father is an anesthesiologist, and was talking to me about this when i asked him about his work back in the day. It fascinated me then.
Basically, they need a bit more than the average person to stay asleep with anesthesia. I'm not sure if that is for all drugs, but definitely for what we commonly use for anesthesia.
Basically, don't share your drugs with a greedy ginger.
I would have thought that meant he would be even more sensitive to spice since he’s resistant to numbing agents
Yes, as a redhead I can confirm that this is true.
Black redhead here! The dentists are always surprised at how many shots of novocain that they have to give me.
Conan was an excellent guest on Hot Ones. It was the highest rated episode ever. Good for Conan. He's so funny and cool
Highest rated on what? It’s there only on RUclips, right? Does it play on some streaming or cable channel?

Best episode on The Hot Ones period! ;)
I've already watched it 5 times. Such an incredible episode.
They made a big deal out of how it was the season finale and then he goes and just drops a new episode right after.
Have to agree. Previous favorite was Key and Peele, but Conan’s was just worlds better than anything else.
