  • History was set at Belmont Park Saturday but it was not Funny Cide becoming a Triple Crown winner. Instead, it was trainer Bobby Frankel winning his first Triple Crown race when his Empire Maker won the Belmont Stakes (gr. I). Ten Most Wanted was second and Funny Cide third.
The New Yorkers were rooting for New York-bred Funny Cide. But a New York-bred did win the Belmont -- Frankel was born in Brooklyn.
Empire Maker ran second to Funny Cide in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), and then skipped the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), which Funny Cide won easily. Empire Maker was favored in the Derby.
Empire Maker is by Unbridled and out of the incredible producer Toussaud, by El Gran Senor. The Belmont winner was bred and is owned by Khalid Abdullah's Juddmonte Farm.
Jose Santos sent Funny Cide right to the lead in the 1 ½ mile race run over a track made quite sloppy by persistent rains. He appeared in good shape when the half was run in :48.70, and six furlongs were timed in 1:13.51.
But, Jerry Bailey aboard Empire Maker said he could sense that Funny Cide was rank as they traveled down the backside. Empire Maker was in third at that point behind Funny Cide and Scrimshaw.
"He was so rank today. He couldn't get him to settle down," Bailey said of Santos and Funny Cide.

Funny Cide hated rain. And he was on the rail the wettest part of the track. He and Jose got the first two legs of the TC and thats pretty amazing. RIP beautiful guy...you're lighting up the heavens.

American Pharoah's grandad gets his Belmont Stakes win which paved the path for Pioneerof The Nile and later American Pharoah's Triple Crown Triumph.

Though I started off the Triple Crown trail a major Empire Maker-fan, I really came to respect Funny Cide. After the Preakness, I honestly felt that he might pull it off, but Empire Maker truly had the distance pedigree. Thanks for uploading this. It was great fun to remember the colorful cast of owners of Sackatoga Stable. BRIAN

    Two notable trivias.
    1. Several years later, the name of the winning trainer here, Bobby Frankel, was later used to name a British colt which would make a deep inpact within the horse racing community worldwide. Coincidentally, that colt has the same owner as Empire Maker.
    2. Empire Maker later became the grandsire, or the grandfather of American Pharoah, which eventually won the triple crown after the American horse racing community waited for three and a half decades.

When Funny came to Churchill a couple years ago for the 10 year (wow!) anniversary of his Derby win, he was still prancing in the paddock acting like he was going to post. Every time he passed the gap to where they would turn to enter the track he would glance over to the track - the old guy still has spunk!

Great ride by Jerry... Funny Cide left his race on the track when he worked 5 furlongs in 57 seconds and change. Bailey just tracked Funny Cide and brought him home

The Triple Crown receives so much media hype that the public often seems unaware that a win in the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, or the Belmont Stakes is a high achievement in itself. Placing in any of these races is ah honor, as well.

The conditions coupled with the distance did not favor Funny Cide. I think it was a mistake to run him in the lead so early too.

  • @SaraNightfire1
    @SaraNightfire1 9 лет назад +6

You could tell that Funny Cide was racing too hard in he first part of the race. The jockey practically had the horse in a chokehold and pulling every step of the way trying to slow him down but Cide wasn't having it. He sadly just ran out of gas n the end.

      JoJoGunn
That was shown in videos and zoomed in pictures to be a false accusation. Also, considering I've seen what horses look like under batteries, he wasn't showing any distress indicating he was being shocked. Also they said they were having a devil of a time trying to keep him calm before the race because of the hype at that point.

I love when you can see how herd dynamics affect the outcome of a race. You can literally see Ten Most Wanted just stop when Empire Maker looks over and pins his ears back at him, and asserts his dominance.

The jockey cost the horse and his self that race all because of changing tactics. The horse has his style of running n also his own pace so that's where the jockey comes in to compromise with funny Cide. I just don't know if he were trying repeat the 1973 Belmont. There's only one SECRETARIAT.

Can't we see anything without hearing about Secretariat? He would never have won by those "remarkable" 31 lengths if Sham had not gotten injured in the Belmont. He was racing on a Indy 500 track on which quite a few records had been broken in the surrounding few weeks. He never ran 2:24 again. In fact, he lost to Prove Out at Belmont by 4 lengths later that year. In the mud. Prove Out's time if it had been a fast, dry track like Sec had in his Belmont, would not doubt be close to 2:24
