  • A record crowd of more than 120,000 went from a roar to silence today at Belmont Park as Birdstone upset Smarty Jones in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) and denied racing its 12th Triple Crown winner.
Stewart Elliott sent Smarty Jones to the lead early on the backside and the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) and Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner was pressed most of the way down the backstretch, first by Eddington and then by Rock Hard Ten.
Smarty Jones put both of those horses away, but Edgar Prado had Birdstone moving well and he came up on Smarty Jones' outside with a furlong to run and gutted out a one-length win.
"He kind of drug Stew to the lead. He didn't settle as easily as he had in his other races," Smarty Jones' trainer John Servis said immediately after the race.
"I was pressured by still felt like I had enough horse," Elliott said.
Prado, who rode the winner, apologized for spoiling yet another Triple Crown bid. "I'm very sorry," Prado said, "but I had to do my job. This is just part of the business."

This was one of the greatest broadcast calls ever. Tom Durkin shows the heartbreak and the astonished respect for Birdstone. Props to Birdstone. He won that day. Disappointment for most though. That's why they play the games. People say that the Kentucky Derby is the most exciting two minutes in sports. I disagree. Nothing compares to the Belmont if a Triple Crown is on the line!

Smarty Jones lost the only race of his life in the least indicated competition: 136th. Belmont Stakes. Anyway, he will always be a great racehorse. So intense was the sympathy Smarty Jones generated that Donna Barton instead of interviewing Birdstone´s Jockey Edgar Prado, went straight to Stewart Elliot. That is what is called "The horse of the people"

The fact that Elliot turned on some gas so early and Rock Hard Ten pressuring Smarty for much of the race is what caused this heartbreaking loss. Having a 4 length lead at the turn for home should have put this race in the bag for Smarty Jones. It is rare that such quality championship horse give up a significant lead down the stretch of the grueling 1 1/2 Belmont. Give it Birdstone and his jock for having the tactical speed and energy reserve to run down Smarty Jones. They did everything right to take advantage of the one thing wrong that Elliot did on Smarty Jones. Sad. What a great horse. Greatest triple crown loser ever.

Looking back.... and heck...going forward. I hope and wish a group like Sackatoga Stables (Funny Cide) or owner like Roy Chapman could win a triple crown. When the opportunity arises, the "blue bloods" seem to conspire to not let "the little guys" win. At least this was rumor as far as Smarty Jones year go. I've watched horse racing in depth since 1997. I've watched replays over and over and over from almost every big race from 1980 and beyond. Looking back....1997/2003/2004 are my best memories from this sport. RIP Roy. I wish you coulda got the TC, but ya know...with Smarty, you created a generation of horse racing fans....and for a moment in 2004.... you had the world cheering for you and your horse. California Chrome could play the role of Smarty Jones and Wicked Strong could play the role of Birdstone where he will catch California Chrome in the final strides.

Stewart Elliott rode this race all wrong he knew everyone was going to push him hard early why did he not just take a lead and come with one sustain run on the outside and am pretty sure he would of won - but i suppose that his just nit picking

Birdstone, Victory Gallop and Da Tara crashed the Triple Crown party. I see it happening again on Saturday!

Rp Perez I liked Da Tara. I loved it when Big Buttsucker started thrashing around because Desormeaux wouldn't let him run.

Birdstone so funny how he has delayed response to the whip. Give em a tap, acts like he doesnt feel it then 3 secs later surge

A lot of blame goes to all jockey's in this race. It almost seemed the "bigger name" jockeys wanted to gang up on Smarty and push him enough to make him fold, with no regard for their own mounts. Secondly, Elliot only ran one race that whole day (I believe). Any rider on a foreign track will take as many mounts as possible to get a feel for the track, slow points, etc. He should've done more in his own right. In any instance, I was here and this was an extremely disappointing day

Na, It was Smarty's Jockey that lost him the race taking the lead and trying to keep it the whole race. He burned Smarty out and just did not have enough left. If he had ran it like Birdstone did, would of been a different story. If Jockey's indeed get together to plot what you say David, then its a Piss poor Jockey to fall for such antics. you do your best, run the best race you can and this just happens brother.

Jeez I wonder how much Visa paid to have it called the “Visa triple crown”. They just had to get their greedy little hands in there didn’t they?

William Ryan Smarty was running against crows in that Triple Crown. His winning times in the first two races weren't anything to shout about; the only good time of the three races was Birdstone's 2:27 in the Belmont.
