- Point Given, the beaten favorite in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), redeemed himself two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), taking racing's middle leg of the Triple Crown Saturday in authoritative fashion before a record Pimlico crowd.
Under Gary Stevens, Point Given was full of run in the final turn, sweeping three wide, hooking stablemate Congaree, and seizing the lead as the field straightened away for home. He crossed the wire 2 1/4 lengths in front of another closer, A P Valentine, with Congaree again just beaten for third. He was a neck behind A P Valentine and 1 1/4 lengths in front of Dollar Bill.
Derby winner Monarchos finished sixth. Monarchos and Point Given vied for favoritism before the race, actually flip-flopping several times as the money poured in. At post time, Point Given was the slight favorite, both horses sent postward at 2-1. There was $1,332,065 in the win pool on Point Given and $1,328,229 on Monarchos.
Trainer Bob Baffert thought two prep races were enough for Point Given going in to the May 5 Derby, but apparently he was wrong. With the Derby fifth-place finish behind him, however, Point Given looked much stronger in the Preakness and the result was never in doubt.
"We were disappointed after the Derby, but we had confidence in the horse," Baffert said. "I loved the way he worked before the race.
"I knew at the quarter pole he was the winner. I haven't seen a move like that since Real Quiet."

Every time I see Point Given, I amazed at how big he was. He made the other horses look like weanlings. Rock Hard Ten and Risen Star were big like that as well.
Check out Forego. He was a behemoth! Lost to Wajima two out of three but looked like he could have swallowed him.
+ipowers2927 Rock Hard Ten was a HUGE horse
Yup, Dortmund is another gigantic thoroughbred.
Point Given was the horse that got me into horseracing, very impressive for such a big horse.

Triple Crown broadcast were so much more interesting and well done back in the day, imo.
100% yes. I can't stand the broadcasts these days. It's all about fashion and parties for some reason...
I'm only 27 years old so clearly I've missed some greats, but to this day, Point Given is probably the second best horse I've ever seen run. Definitely one of the top 3 year olds of this century
I got to meet Monarchos when he was standing at Claiborne, and he was so gentle. He happily let me give him a hug and of course he got some cookies. The only thing he did was let out a great big yawn. More concerned about whether he could lay down and take a nap. :)
Thank you for uploading these complete broadcasts. I used to have them all on VHS taped over the air, but I had to get rid of them because of a move.
Wow! Thank you so much I am so excited to watch it! That was incredible of you!
1 of the Greatest Horses of this Century...Even with his Short career i have him in my Top 3 of this Century along with American Pharoah and Ghostzapper...These 3 are Standouts
I miss Jim McKay
RIP Big Boy you were a Big Stud with a beautiful long stride!
Amazing! Thanks for posting this entire broadcast! I can't wait to see the entire televised broadcast of the 2001 Belmont Stakes - I hope you post that (fingers crossed)!
Point Given was built like Secretariat.
Those were an excellent moves by G.S/Point Given! 3 wide on the clubhouse, 4 wide burst on the backside to sweep ahead into 3rd with lots in the tank and a power stretch run. Grandmaster ride by Stevens!
Monarchos needed a pace meltdown and a little luck to get this done. He got neither. Plus his trainer said before the race that he hated the track.
At the beginning there is a mistake. Monarchos did not run the second fastest Derby ever. Sham did in a losing bid to Secretariat. Everyone sleeps on Sham, what an incredible horse. Would have finished second in every Triple Crown race if not for a broken bone in the Belmont.
You're welcome..I just put the 2001 Belmont broadcast up.
Point Given looking back for the other horses until he was at the wire.
Seattle Slew is and always will be the Best of the Best.....Love you Slew and the Taylors...!!!
Great Horse this was the first of 4 consecutive Grade 1 wins for him
I have about 20 minutes of that broadcast.. I'll post it sometime this coming week.
Point Given should have been raced more going into the Derby. This is the result of the super greedy horse racing industry of today that he was not given more prep races before the Derby like he would have in the 1960's and 1970's.
No, he would have been retired early. Don't forget that his career ended early due to injury.
Wow. I can’t imagine the childhood George had. How does a young child rise above that? But he did.
Ha... I just realized that he is owned by prince achmed... you know, from Jasmine
How about the full broadcast of the 2002 kentucky derby 2002 preakness and the 2002 belmont
can you upload the '84 preakness pleease?
How many of these Preakness horses are still alive? Is dollar bill still alive?
Dollar Bill died in 2004 😢sadly
Race @ 51:55
the triple crown ended on the middle jewel for the second year in the row
Camera switched too late on the stretch
I'll post what I can soon..
this is my 2nd fav triple crown year (first is sunday silence - easy goer) but i respect Monarchos but point given was the best 3 yr old this year by far and i kinda feel sorry for the horse that he his not a triple crown winner one of the best american horses i have seen
Point given should have been a triple crown winner got bounced around in Kentucky Derby
Beautiful Point Given reminds me of the greatest horse Secretariat!
1:07:26 he's getting the replica version of that trophy
I'm assuming that the grass epidemic was eventually solved, but what caused it?
Btw, little did Victor Espinoza know that 16 years later, he'd win the Triple Crown 👑.
