Not only was this the greatest Derby ever, but Tom Durkin also delivered the greatest call. Absolutely spotless and poetic. "Songandaprayer's pace is blistering down the back stretch" "Pent up power of Point Given." "Jorge Chaves gets busy on Monarchos" "Invisible Ink is there, Point Given not today" "He's pulling away by 2, he's pulling away by 3" Kids, take notes.
I’ll go along with 2nd best derby ever, 1:59.40 best derby ever, I won’t mention the name because this isn’t one of his videos, but this was a great race!!
The track was a crafted into a launching pad for the Derby -- and if Big Red's record couldn't be broken then......no way will it ever going to be erased.
Sec's actual time is still a mystery. The first time was not 1:53 flat. It was more. But a couple of reportest timed it and said no, he ran it faster. The Sec Fan Club bugged the Maryland Racing Commission for 20 years before the time was changed to the current time.
@@brucerobbins6528 Uh, that was the Preakness, not the Derby. In the Preakness, the official timer was damaged by people running across it. Sec's times in the Derby and the Belmont are no mystery.
Absolutely great race, but track conditions also played a role. Monarchos caught lightening a a bottle that day; he was an above-average T-Bred, but not great.
Still 17 lengths ahead of American pharaoh and 20 ahead of Justify. Which the oaks winner the day before pharaoh ran 150 for 9 furlongs. She would have need to run 14 seconds for a final 8th to beat pharaoh.
Excuses Excuses, instead of diminishing this horse's accomplishment just because he almost overthrew your sacred king Secretariat, how about respect and congratulate the legendary race he ran!
Turcotte used the whip on Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby. It's there to see in the videos. Like 2 or 3 times down the stretch in his drive to catch/pass Sham.
Another way to illustrates Jorge Chavez - chop chop brillance it doesn't requires much whipping for his horses to responds Call it "Poetry In Motion" aka Philip Feanny
Point Given would have won the Triple Crown had it not been for this race. I wonder what went wrong for him here? A 5th place finish certainly wasn’t what he was looking for.
Monarchos was almost as fast. Songandaprayer had to set a blazing pace to set up a great stretch run for the winner....and we know that Secretariat could have run faster but he was two lengths ahead so why push for more. if Monarchos wasn't injured in the Preakness, he probably could have beaten Point Given in that race. However, the Belmont Stakes would have taken a tremendous effort to beat Point Given. Monarchos will forever be remembered for running the second fastest derby and a heck of a horse.
We are talking 3/10ths of a second, and I maintain Secretariat would not have run a time under 2 minutes if the field ran a half mile in 44 and 4. Secretariat is the all-time legend, but this was the greatest Derby performance of all time.
@@greghudson6861 Secretariats heart size and temperment (and performance at Belmont) beg to differ. Had Secretariat been in this field.........you would then see the greatest Debry performance of all time.
@@forrestfenn7511 I've said it, Secretariat was the better horse. But he WASNT in this 2001 field. So Monarchos, IMO, gets the title of "best derby run" while Secretariat remains "greatest horse that ever ran"
Secretariat would have beaten Manarcos with eas bc secretariat ran the derby at 1:59:4 or 1:59:2/5 and his cuz Sham was faster than that race with 1:59:9 and Manarcos is 1:59:97 listen/read closely

I don’t know why but “Point Given, not today” has stuck in my head for twenty years. Great call by Durkin.
Tom Durkin was the best to ever do it, imo- told the story, eloquent, dramatic, always had you on the edge of your seat.
Point given was riding terrible that day or he easily wins that race
“The opening half mile was the fastest in derby history!”
This race had the best horse names. All of them great.
Yesterday reminded me of this race - as insane as the pace was, the fractions and final here still stand the test of time!
Great Race! Just makes you remember “Big Red” the still reigning champ!
Mr. Fraction of a Second.
What a great KY Derby. Wow! Imagine being the owners of Monarchos and watching this race. That was all guts and class.
Holy crap. He was so far back still at the far turn incredible
The track was a crafted into a launching pad for the Derby -- and if Big Red's record couldn't be broken then......no way will it ever going to be erased.
200 win place on monarchos. One of my favorite days.
Fantastic race. Monarchos was the second fastest Derby winner, about 1/2 second behind Secretariat.
Sec's actual time is still a mystery. The first time was not 1:53 flat. It was more. But a couple of reportest timed it and said no, he ran it faster. The Sec Fan Club bugged the Maryland Racing Commission for 20 years before the time was changed to the current time.

And in third place, Northern Dancer 2:00.00 (1964)🐴🐴🐴
No Sham is faster than Monarchos
You're right. I stand corrected.
Invisible Ink really stole my heart in this race.
He died at only 13 years old. Too weak and for him to Place proves it was just a fluke
“He was as fast as Sham”*
Actually not he was slower than Sham by about .07 seconds
Classic line😊
NBC’s first Kentucky Derby
ALMOST as fast as Secretariat.
It's almost as if announcers saying a million words in 2 minutes take liberties for the sake of being concise.
Right, let alone Sham.
Chavez and Monarchos ran a perfectly timed race that day even of PG was better overall it still depends on how you race em
Absolutely great race, but track conditions also played a role. Monarchos caught lightening a a bottle that day; he was an above-average T-Bred, but not great.
Not as fast as Secretariat, but nearly as fast as Sham.
s\Song and a Prayer set the pace of this great race.
But not actually as fast as Secretariat.
Still 17 lengths ahead of American pharaoh and 20 ahead of Justify. Which the oaks winner the day before pharaoh ran 150 for 9 furlongs. She would have need to run 14 seconds for a final 8th to beat pharaoh.
Only because they readjusted the finish time to make it slightly slower so that it didn't beat the Holy Grail time of Secretariat. I call BS!!!
@@jeffthom1468 not true, the final time announced in the race is 1:59.4/5, it’s still listed as that, Idk how he confused 4/5 and .40.
ALMOST as fast as Secretariat.
But look at the other side of chop chop in this instance it's the way he employs his whip on Monarchos
Too many horses ran their best races ever. It makes you wonder how good secretariat was
One big difference was Monarchos jockey used the whip a lot, where Ron Turcotte never used the whip on Secretariat.
Excuses Excuses, instead of diminishing this horse's accomplishment just because he almost overthrew your sacred king Secretariat, how about respect and congratulate the legendary race he ran!
Not true, Turcotte admits in interviews that he used the whip in the Derby
Turcotte used the whip on Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby. It's there to see in the videos. Like 2 or 3 times down the stretch in his drive to catch/pass Sham.
Gary Stevens TOTALLY BLEW Point Given's Triple Crown here. You do not need to tell him. He already knows.
The Triple Crown was there for the taking but Gary the Buffoon was an amateur rider that day
@donarthiazi2443 yes sir
Almost as fast as Secretariat
He was as fast as Secretariat ... Tom Durkin unique and colorful comparisons.
No he was not dont get me wrong bc im not but that race Manorchos= 1:59:97 and even Sham= 1:59:9 who was 2 lengths behind Secretariat=
1:59:4 seconds
@@Lexi_adventuresSham never won the Derby though, people are comparing the winners of the Derby’s times
Only derby i attended, my view was horrible. By the gate, saw them break and run by on the stretch. If I ever go again I’ll have a better view.
Seemed like there were too many horses out there. Admittedly I know little about horseracing, but they were all bunched up at the start
Another way to illustrates Jorge Chavez - chop chop brillance it doesn't requires much whipping for his horses to responds

What happened to Point Given in this race, he should have been a Triple Crown winner.
He chased the early speed and used himself up.
Too close to the early pace
The track played to the outcome, horse racing its called, lets say the track was packed down that day.
Didn’t fire
Triple crown winners don't run record times. The pace was too fast

In addition to Secretariat, Sham was probably faster than Monarchos as well, so it may not have been the second fastest derby time ever.
Jorge Chavez (Chop Chop) just as equivalent to tooth loss
Chavez was the Greatest Jockey.
Sorry, not as fast as Secretariat. Also, could not reproduce his speed.
Bruh of all the racehorses ever Secretariat is not the one that needs defending. Nobody thinks he’s not one of the GOATs.
