I cry my guts out every time I see Barbaro run the Derby. I still remember watching the race at my boyfriend's grandmother's apartment--in Louisville--and sobbing helplessly when that covered van drove off. Just so awful and sad...reminded me of the heroic Black Gold.
It's still a tragedy that in a 20 horse field, in the sloppiest conditions you could ever imagine, that they took Maximum Security down. The reason there had NEVER been a DQ in the Derby is because in a 20 horse field, lots of sh!t happens. It was simply a horse race. He should have been crowned the winner. Shameful.
I sort of agree! There has been so much worse to occur in the derby (even in racing in general, check out the 2011 Santa Anita Handicap during the stretch) where the results stayed the same. I was actually at the derby and everyone in the crowd was booing. I was so upset because Maximum Security was my pick and it was such an incredible feeling picking the winner in person. However, with all that has happened with Jason Servis, I am glad he was taken down so we aren't dealing with that controversy if he should be taken down as the winner over a year later. It is definitely not Maximum Security's fault what his trainer did to him but there is no question that he would have never won the derby if he was not on the drugs he was on :/
Yes! That disqualification was a travesty. The whole incident was caused by WoW's jockey, painfully stepping up on MA's heels. Poor horse, yet he got the boot for it.
I blame the track judges for the injury. They had a horse who had obviously not settled down. (They put him in the drug barn due to the fact that there were chances of drugging with the trainer.) The horse threw his bucket across the aisle. (told by a reporter when the story was first leaked, quickly removed). Horses who are used to stalls and are usually settled in their stalls don't do that. The trainer wanted the horse to settle in another stall outside the drug barn, the stewards refused, the horse injured himself a few days later. That's a helluva coincidence.
I don't think so I think Bernardini would've still be a competent rival to give Barbaro some trouble if he did finnish the Preakness Bernardini would have definitly given him a challenge.

Ruffian was also amazing. She was undefeated. Secretariat wasn't. Man o war in my opinion was also a great horse. So for me, those two were better than secretariat, so was seabiscuit.

@@divaah4406 no Big Brown is an actual horse. Won the KD and the Preakness and then fizzled out in the Belmont. Almost a triple crown winner in 2008. He's my favorite cause of how confident and composed he was waiting till the last bend/corner to hit the jets and just power his way to the lead and cruise to victory. Such a beautiful handsome horse
