I loved hores and started watching races young. I remember seeing Secretariat race( still my favorite). Maybe for a little excitement take a look at some of those old races. Sadly, seeing Ruffian break down ended my love of horseracing.
The normal thoroughbred has an 8-9 lb heart…when they did a post mortem on Secretariat that horse’s heart was over 20 lbs! Secretariat was a freak of nature. Or maybe genetically modified…who knows 🤷🏼♂️
@@lindahake1666 there is a documentary on RUclips about Secretariat... should watch it... they mention how big his heart ❤️ was. That horse was a beast!
(Secretariat)Kentucky Derby time 1:59:40 (Mystick Dans) time today 2:3.34 I hope people really and truly understand how great Secretariat was We will never see another Secretariat again! He records are safe for ever
I just want to say as great as secretariat was, you really can't compare times today to times 50 years ago. Rules have changed (they have cracked down on drug use and whipping as well as other rules). Tracks today have actually been made slower than back then due to safety reasons. I am not saying these horses would have beat secretariat because I have no doubt that secretariat would have smoked these horses as the time was extremely slow this year. However, comparing the times secretariat made 51 years ago is not really reasonable considering how much has changed in racing.

@@ernesthercher5193 -LOL. Some butt hurt people think he should have. Last time I looked, the best horse in the race is the one who crossed the finish line FIRST. Hugging the rail might be the shortest distance you have to cover, but it’s also where you have the most traffic to contend with.
If you watch closely. Jockey on the 2 horse clearly grabs Forever young jockey whip out of his hands. Before that happen I saw a whip go flying in the middle of the screen. Did anyone else see this. Forever young won this race hands down. Bumped all the way down stretch.
Larry Collmus having a Tom Durkin 09 moment there! Mystik Dan was well clear for a bit there and Larry didn't even see him similar to Tom Durkin when Mine That Bird won in 09.
Yes, I was waiting on this comment, that horse had opened up by the time he noticed it ,he was looking at all the outside horses that were closing and lost track of the rail
Larry’s time has past. That was one of the best derbys ever and he missed the horse on the lead, and made that call one to watch the race with the volume off. Was strangely obsessed with a horse that wasn’t really doing anything, Fierceness and Stronghold… great race and awful call
Last video I watched with my loving dad before he passed on June 5th. He loved horse racing, one of his favorite fun times. I love and misses him so much. What an exciting finish that made him smile.
Shocking commentary guys, the greatest 2 minutes in sports deserves better than that, come on. A tale of tough horses and a jockey who was determined to get his horse on the inside (that was the long photo delay, normally a stewards and DQ in America but Kentucky wanted to avoid it) and a jockey who took a horse’s moment in history away by giving it too much to do. Great racing brilliant event as always 🎉… CONGRATULATIONS MYSTIC DAN 🎉🎉
Congrats to Mystic Dan. Got the ground saving trip...Forever Young seems like the real deal...look for this horse if he stays healthy to do great things, probably should have won today for a number of factors including the ride 😉
#11 Forever Young's jockey should've claimed foul against #2 Sierra Leone's rider. Definitely had a chance to get put up to second, there was a lot of contact and may have cost him a nose or a neck 🤨🤔 Anyone agree?
Disagree, because none of the bumping was intentional. You see this every year around the final curve, the horses lean towards the rail down the stretch, and bumping happens all the time. Even if FY's jockey did decide to lodge a complaint, it would be rejected. It's bumping. It happens. Move on with your life.
He’s the trainer of my mother in law’s horses and while they’re not winning derby’s, they win quite a lot and they’re amazing horses! He’s a great guy and he has a great team of trainers under him.
I fervently wish what you said becomes reality. He won a local grade 1 race (counts as listed race in international grading) last Wednesday. His next race will be Breeders' Cup Classic, which he and Sierra Leone might clash again
overall a really brilliant race- some incredible riding by al three jockeys and massive heart in both Forever Young and Sierra Leone as well. SUPER impressed by the way Brian Hernandez kept Mystik Dan right at the rail, just behind the leaders for so long, and as soon as that gap opened up, he took that slot. really really well done.
Unreal race. One to remember. Sierra Leone only downfall was his leaning towards that rail. If that horse runs straight without contact, I think it’s a super super tight one between forever and Leone.
@@ketanjibrownsfavemolester7592 absolutely!!! Two fierce competitors, one of which was unbeaten, fighting tooth and nail to the end. There was no dirty play, just two horses going after it until the end.
i think Forever Young pulls away and wins by half a length if Leone doesnt bump his whole rear off balance. imagine what that does to a runner at this stage yet still right there. and he bumped him the whole stretch. Leone might of had a better run too but my guess is Forever Young. once he seen Leone next to him he dug in more - tough horse! best Derby ive seen mayber ever.
Correction: Sierra Leone was the best horse in the race, Forever young kept lunging into him disrupting his closing line, I am glad that Japanese cheat ended up third behind Sierra Leone.
1:40 - Race winning move not giving up that spot he held the entire race. Beautiful ride, stayed in striking distance while saving ground the entire time.
In the video it is clearly seen that Sierra Leone charges in and hits Forever Young almost making him fall, the Japanese should have filed a claim against Sierra Leone
What a race. I will say that was a horrible call of the race lol. Down the stretch he's calling a horse taking the lead that was actually 3rd lol. Come on man. Mystic Dan was well in front as he saying another horse had taken the lead.
@@cjhurtado73 He probably didn't. If you notice, there's a break in the call when he's trying to call that Resilience and Stronghold are coming up on Fierceness's outside on the turn, it's only a half second pause, but it is there, so he likely looked down at his program/flash cards to see which two horses those were, and may have missed Mystik Dan coming through on the rail when he did. And bc track announcers use binoculars to call races, and bc binoculars have a small view point, Mystik Dan was probably out of his sight again until he set the binoculars down when the horses got close enough to see without them
Congratulations to Kenny McPeek and his entire crew Wins both the KY Oaks, Thorpedo Anna, and the KY Derby, Mystic Dan. Spectacular!!! I bet the donuts will flood that barn🎉🏆👏
What a race three way photo finish my horse Sierra Leone loses by nostril , Forever Young 3rd. What a race he run in a thriller . congratulations mystik Dan .
Secretariat was an all - time great and his time was very impressive but the track was extremely fast that day and the one today was probably heavy with all the rain, lately. Mystic Dan, also, had to squeeze through traffic on the rail and it took a lot out of him. He ran an awesome race even if it wasn't all that fast !
to think that humans evolve and horses do not. you have to remember steroids were LEGAL in horse racing in those days not to mention the dirt in 73 was like running on concrete almost. you simply cant compare. barry bonds was the best hitter to ever play the game in my eyes but thanks to 3 types of roids or PEDs he used and one of them he used helped with eye site which a lot of people dont realize. so next time we want to compare today horses with Secret-ariat lets think about this? we had a nice clean race this year because they cracked down on Bob Bafferts drugged up horses.
@@josephyodiceyodice5990 Agree was a great race today. But the racetrack in 1973 was *not* lightning, merely fast. What made the time so fast is you had literally the two thoroughbreds (cousins) with the largest measured hearts in global history, going at each other hammer and tongs down the straight, to record the two fastest Kentucky Derby times of all time! That's right, Sham ran the Derby faster than any other horse in history, besides his cousin Secretariat.
Up until now the 05’ Derby was my favorite BUT THIS IS THE BEST BY FAR! Mystik Dan holding off the closers and getting the Oaks and Derby double, Sierra Leone and Forever Young slugging it out for 2nd & 3rd, and even T O Password did great! Im so proud of the Japanese! And hopefully this encourages them to keep trying because this was a huge performance.
Oh yeah, Giacomo passes 11 in the stretch, 6 of which he passed in deep stretch. Only one sports writer thought he'd win. Heck, I saw the Hollywood Futurity in person, and the top 3 were all out and matched each other stride for stride.
Derby is about who gets the best trip and stays out of trouble. Both Leon and Young ran better races, going wide, pounding into each other down the stretch and a stride or two more and both would have passed the winner. Congrats to Hernandez, he’s been around a long time. The Derby is the race you want to win. You’ll have that forever. If Baffert goes to Baltimore then your Triple Crown hopes will end there.
I am proud of Forever Young. The owner of the company that created Uma Musume, which revitalized horse racing in Japan, became the owner of the horse and won third place in the prestigious Kentucky Derby, not far behind first place. It's dramatic and inspiring. Also, he's super cute. Cute, cute, cute.
Sierra Leone's jockey lost his riding crop in the bumping with Forever Young and reached out and grabbed Forever Young's jockey. You can see it in the frontal view.
That never happened. Tyler still had his whip when he came back to the barn. In the frontal view he was holding the whip in his left hand right up to the end. He said after the race, he couldn't use the whip because Forever Young was too close, and he would hit forever young, which would cause a foul. He also never grabbed forever young, it is obvious in the frontal view he was trying to use the stick left handed and pull the reing to the right to get Serria Leone to straighten out. The fact of the matter is that both Serria Leone and Forever Young cost each other the race. Both of them were bumping each other. This is not surprising considering both of these horses were likely very tired by the end. Horses tend to drift in and out when they are tired. Both of those horses ran too good to lose, but hey that is the Kentucky Derby for you.
@@niecolaklima6366 If he doesn't actually impede the progress of another horse, no he doesn't. Many horses, especially deep closers like SL, have a bad habit of lugging in late in the stretch. As long as he doesn't actively impede the forward progress of another horse (which he didn't bc Forever Young still nearly won the race), than he doesn't need to be disqualified for it. And also, what is blaming the horse for the lugging in going to do if you disqualify him for it? The horse doesn't know it has been disqualified for anything and that isn't going to magically teach the horse to not lug in
@rendragmedia definitely! I expect the announcer to get the call right. It would be like Emmitt Smith scoring the winning TD in the Super Bowl and Al Michaels saying it was Michael Irvin.
if Sierra Leone had run straight and not kept bumping Forever Young, he probably would have won (also i feel so bad for Forever Young's connections, they were so close to winning! but there's always next time!) and to everyone criticizing Larry's call, back off. Everyone makes mistakes; even the GOATs slip up every once in a while anyways, what a thriller of a finish for the 150th Derby!

Another great one...👍
@@ValleyoftheRogueyeah that one was arguably the greatest race of all time with the Triple Crown on the line. Legendary rivalry between those two.
@@ericbrown1101 It was the best.
Probably one of the best Kentucky Derby’s I’ve ever seen if not the best
there was a better one two short years ago.
And the one of the Big Red in 1973...
I loved hores and started watching races young. I remember seeing Secretariat race( still my favorite). Maybe for a little excitement take a look at some of those old races. Sadly, seeing Ruffian break down ended my love of horseracing.
50+ years later Secretariat's record still stands.
And it always WILL.
The normal thoroughbred has an 8-9 lb heart…when they did a post mortem on Secretariat that horse’s heart was over 20 lbs! Secretariat was a freak of nature. Or maybe genetically modified…who knows 🤷🏼♂️
@david …. Could you post your info source? Secretariat had a big heart but never heard it was THAT big. Thanks.
He was running a Hemi !! 😅...
@@lindahake1666 there is a documentary on RUclips about Secretariat... should watch it... they mention how big his heart ❤️ was. That horse was a beast!
1. Lost cable connection.

3. It's one of the best races ever!
(Secretariat)Kentucky Derby time 1:59:40
(Mystick Dans) time today 2:3.34
I hope people really and truly understand how great Secretariat was We will never see another Secretariat again! He records are safe for ever
Secretariat - a truly unique, Freak of Nature!
(That's a compliment.) 🥰
@@KathrynsWorldWildfireTracking thank you ! 😁
@@SSN862 Secretariat had a huge heart.
The tracks of the 1970's were scraped and concrete hard. There is no comparison to today's tracks.
Greatest Finish, possibly of all time at the turn AND, at the wire. Outstanding race. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
An absolute joy to watch and breathtaking beauty! Nothing like the Derby!!!
I always get emotional watching these races…those power animals are just so beautiful 🤩
If Sirrea didn't block Forever Young for the whole finishing straight the Japanese horse would've won it easily.
There was plenty of bumping
going on by both...
Take your loss, and stop whining..
Ya Sierra was causing it could've been a foul
Mystic Dan wasn't exactly quitting here

Absolutely Right
Boy, that was exciting! Really didn't think that Mystik Dan would pull it off but was hoping McPeek/Hernandez could take the Oaks/Derby double. Brian doing his best Calvin Borel imitation coming up that rail. So happy for the whole team!
Forever Young was best in this race. Wide throughout almost knocked off its feet by Sierra Leone to only lose by a head.
Welcome to the derby
Dude-Mystik Dan had to shoot a gap half a horse wide to get to the front. He was pinned on the rail the entire race. Give credit where credit is due.
@@aeromedical6776 He had a perfect trip while saving ground the entire race. At the top of the stretch he had to wait for the tired frontrunners to drop back before he shot through. Besides that, it was a perfect ride by Hernandez.
I’m confused did FY win the race?
@@ernesthercher5193 -LOL. Some butt hurt people think he should have. Last time I looked, the best horse in the race is the one who crossed the finish line FIRST. Hugging the rail might be the shortest distance you have to cover, but it’s also where you have the most traffic to contend with.
Forever young the real deal. Best horse in race....
If you watch closely. Jockey on the 2 horse clearly grabs Forever young jockey whip out of his hands. Before that happen I saw a whip go flying in the middle of the screen. Did anyone else see this. Forever young won this race hands down. Bumped all the way down stretch.
My money was on Forever Young

But didn't win.
The best in every race is the winner. Nobody else
I had this weird feeling about both Mystik Dan and Forever Young this morning. Glad I went with my gut

:)
Larry Collmus having a Tom Durkin 09 moment there! Mystik Dan was well clear for a bit there and Larry didn't even see him similar to Tom Durkin when Mine That Bird won in 09.
Mine that Birds race was amazing but this call noticed Mystik Dan way before the other noticed Mind that Bird.
Yeah ..he blew it
Not an easy gig to do perfectly...
Especially in a 20 horse field...
Yes, I was waiting on this comment, that horse had opened up by the time he noticed it ,he was looking at all the outside horses that were closing and lost track of the rail
Mine that Bird was my favorite
Nice ride Brian Hernandez. Gave Mystic Dan a really good journey 💪⭐️
That was an exciting finish. I was pulling for West Saratoga
That little horse was so game to finish 12th after getting the snot knocked out of him, twice!
Larry’s time has past. That was one of the best derbys ever and he missed the horse on the lead, and made that call one to watch the race with the volume off. Was strangely obsessed with a horse that wasn’t really doing anything, Fierceness and Stronghold… great race and awful call
Yes he was focused on the outside horses and didn't pick up the rail
As is often the case, he's focused on the horses he's wagered on...and has hallucinations of glory. He sucks.
@@michiganjackLarry also blew the Rich Strike call. He stinks
NBC=Naturally Bad Coverage
Congrats to Mystic Dan. Got the ground saving trip...Forever Young seems like the real deal...look for this horse if he stays healthy to do great things, probably should have won today for a number of factors including the ride 😉
Jockey is rookie
#11 Forever Young's jockey should've claimed foul against #2 Sierra Leone's rider. Definitely had a chance to get put up to second, there was a lot of contact and may have cost him a nose or a neck 🤨🤔
Anyone agree?
I agree
Yes I agree, the betters who had place money 💰 should be mad 😠 😡
It was mutual.
The jockey, trainer, and owner all have the right to claim a foul, none of rhem did.
Forever Young got boxed in the whole race then finally got out and was bumped all the way done the stretch. He will win the next two races, bank.
I fervently wish what you said becomes reality. He won a local grade 1 race (counts as listed race in international grading) last Wednesday. His next race will be Breeders' Cup Classic, which he and Sierra Leone might clash again
The ending fight between the horse on 2nd place and 3place was determined for the winner!!
Doesn't get any closer than that. What a beautiful race
Congrats to Mystic Dan and his jockey Hernandez!!! What a very smart jockey! Great ride and well deserved win!❤
Nail biting! So exciting! Congratulations Mystic Dan! 🎉🎉❤❤
The Japanese horse Forever Young had a good chance kept getting bumped tough loss
NASCAR and horse racing are killing it with photo finishes this year
overall a really brilliant race- some incredible riding by al three jockeys and massive heart in both Forever Young and Sierra Leone as well.
Those two reminded me
of Sunday Silence Easy Goer
in the preakness...👈🤔
Forever Young was the best horse in the race. Mystic Dan got a dream trip. Just glad Fierceness lost.
Jockey was smart to stay on rail
Like Calvin Borel
Why glad fierceness lost?
He had to fight to get that trip,it was a very smart ride
Dream trip? He went through a hole that didn't exist to get past Track Phantom. There was nothing dreamy about it. That was pure heart and courage.
Correction: Sierra Leone was the best horse in the race, Forever young kept lunging into him disrupting his closing line, I am glad that Japanese cheat ended up third behind Sierra Leone.
Bad call by Colmus, He did not recognize Dan
1:40 - Race winning move not giving up that spot he held the entire race. Beautiful ride, stayed in striking distance while saving ground the entire time.
In the video it is clearly seen that Sierra Leone charges in and hits Forever Young almost making him fall, the Japanese should have filed a claim against Sierra Leone
Beautiful!!! What a great race.
What a race. I will say that was a horrible call of the race lol. Down the stretch he's calling a horse taking the lead that was actually 3rd lol. Come on man. Mystic Dan was well in front as he saying another horse had taken the lead.
We'll soon develop a race
caller with 40 eyes...👈🤔
Exactly! Horrible track call. I was like wtf do you not see Mystic Dan leading by 2 lengths lol

Secretariat was an all -
time great and his time
was very impressive but
the track was extremely
fast that day and the one today was probably
heavy with all the rain,
lately. Mystic Dan, also,
had to squeeze through
traffic on the rail and it
took a lot out of him.
He ran an awesome race
even if it wasn't all that
fast !
to think that humans evolve and horses do not. you have to remember steroids were LEGAL in horse racing in those days not to mention the dirt in 73 was like running on concrete almost. you simply cant compare. barry bonds was the best hitter to ever play the game in my eyes but thanks to 3 types of roids or PEDs he used and one of them he used helped with eye site which a lot of people dont realize. so next time we want to compare today horses with Secret-ariat lets think about this? we had a nice clean race this year because they cracked down on Bob Bafferts drugged up horses.
@@mike.j3913 not unless they go back to legalizing roids
Even if Baffert doesn’t go to Baltimore, MD’s Triple Crown are over …
I am proud of Forever Young.
The owner of the company that created Uma Musume, which revitalized horse racing in Japan, became the owner of the horse and won third place in the prestigious Kentucky Derby, not far behind first place.
It's dramatic and inspiring.
Also, he's super cute. Cute, cute, cute.
What a run! Love when the race is so competitive.
Sierra Leone's jockey lost his riding crop in the bumping with Forever Young and reached out and grabbed Forever Young's jockey. You can see it in the frontal view.
doesn't matter since he didn't win
Sierra NEEDS TO BE DISQUALIFIED, HE HAS A BAD HABIT OF DOING THESE THINGS
The horse doesn't know it has been disqualified for anything and that isn't going to magically teach the horse to not lug in
I called this race all day!!! Congratulations Mystic!!!

Final time of over 2:03.34 in a blanket finish, one of the slowest Derby's ever run on a fast track since Cannonade in 1974.
Yeah, but poor ole SL had to run 11 furlongs !!
They've really slowed the tracks lately, which disguises the poor performance of horses all being bred for speed at a young age.
@@floycewhite6991 - So you’re saying that horses are now predominately sprinters as opposed to routers ?
I’ve heard the question about track prep directed at Churchill Downs officials, and they all seem to deny that it has changed. I always suspected they went to a higher sand content after a string of off-track years, like the late 90’s. But that was just idle speculation on my part.
