From the time Secretariat put his head in front of Sham at the top of the backstretch, he never lost an inch to another horse in the race, and in fact was gaining ground with every single step he took. That is mind boggling to think about. He sprinted the first six furlongs, and the other horses were presumably conserving energy running much slower. Presumably by the the time they hit the turn to come into the home stretch the other horses should have started making up ground on Secretariat as he started to slow down. That never happened. He only increased his lead with every stride. He continued to sprint, and at a faster pace than the trailing horses that were starting to run faster themselves and had conserved energy during the first half of the race. @@toddjohnson7133 I've often wondered this myself. You are absolutely right, Turcotte never used the whip, cuz as you say it was completely unnecessary. The only encouragement Secretariat received, was that Turcotte let the reins go and let the horse run his own race once they hit the backstretch and he began to pull away from Sham. But what would have happened had Turcotte even given him one tap? Well the world record for a mile and a half on turf is 2:22.3 set by Twighlight Eclipse in 2013. I'm not sure even Secretariat could have run that fast on dirt, but it's not hard to imagine that he could have gotten pretty close to that time with just a little encouragement.

Chris Hartley, you’re way off base. Ghostzapper only raced 11 times and only a handful of his races went beyond a mile. Secretariat not only had the speed but he could run for distance as well. He would of made mincemeat of Ghostzapper!
cadavis7261 I watched this race in black and white with my best friend when we were both in grade school. This is the first time I watched it in color. Secratariat was so amazing in that race, winning so fast and no one could catch him. We both rooted this amazing red horse on.
Sounds like my parents; they lived through the Depression and never replaced anything unless it simply broke. Every now and then I still come across a TV program I never knew was in color because my parents kept their black and white TV long after color TVs were affordable.
NYRA clearly got permission from CBS Sports to post the video. This is why the video quality is far better than the bootleg kinescopes that are typically seen of this race and this broadcast on RUclips.

I was so fortunate to be there and watch this race... I was eleven years old and we went to Belmont and Aqueduct quite frequently to watch the horses run. I will never forget this race and I will never forget that horse.
My grandfather, who was 74 at the time, was a horseman and p/t bookie. I watched this race live with him. After Secretariat took the commanding lead, my grandfather said: “You won’t see this again…this horse is once in a lifetime”. I’m 72 now. So Pop was right.
I always liked the story of Jack Nicklaus watching this race on TV at his home. He started weeping uncontrollably and had no idea why. He mentioned this to a a sports writer. The writer told Nicklaus he was weeping because he, as an athlete, had witnessed something rare: perfection in sports.
We knew we were watching something miraculous that day - and when Chic Anderson declared "... he is moving like a TREMENDOUS MACHINE!" , it was the best description imaginable. Secretariat's autopsy revealed a heart more than two and a half times larger than normal, so when all the others were suffering oxygen debt, he was just getting his second wind.
Sham broke a bone in his leg along the backstretch, and his jockey, Laffit Pincay, sensed something wrong so he eased up and just rode him out to the finish. It had to be surgically repaired with screws, and it ended the horse's racing career. He had a successful but not spectacular record as a stud.
@@thepack74 Any other year, Sham probably wins the Triple Crown himself. An outstanding horse that also broke the track records at the Derby and the Preakness. Secretariat was simply legendary.
I've watched replays of this 73 Belmont dozens of times, and I still tear up and get goose bumps every time. Never has a horse or athlete in any sport faced so much pressure, or had such high hopes placed on him, yet somehow still manage to spectacularly exceed all expectations. This race is quite possibly the single greatest sports performance of the 20th Century. Sham was a tremendous horse in his own right, having at that time run the second fastest Kentucky Derby and Preakness in history. Yet Secretariat completely broke him on the way to his 31 length victory. The personification of true greatness.

@@GolfBaller He just takes my breath away.I was ten years old when I watched Secretariat take the Triple Crown and I've never forgotten how it felt to see his victory!
This race started with five horses but quickly became a match between Sham and Secretariat. Sham was a valiant horse but at the 1:00 mark, the truly unthinkable started to happen. Secretariat, at that moment, decided to run into the history books! He accelerated away from Sham and galloped into the Twilight Zone. With every yard, he and Turcotte left the others in his dust and increased his lead. At 1:40, things got surreal! A performance never-before-seen took place...an awesome display that raised goosebumps and brought tears to the eyes! It was almost a religious experience to see this horse race for the finish line. An equine still unequaled, unrivaled and unique!
It was right about that time when Sham fractured the cannon bone in one of his legs, and his jockey recognized that something was wrong with his horse. He eased him off the pace and just rode him out to the finish---not that he would have beaten Secretariat on that day even with 4 healthy legs. However, while he never beat Secretariat for a win, he did beat him for second place in the Wood Memorial.
I read one interview of Ron Turcotte where he said that the last part of the race just felt strange, because usually you hear the cacophony of the hooves of the other horses nearby. This time coming around the turn and into the stretch, Secretariat had eclipsed the field by such an unbelievable amount that Ron was running in quiet. He did turn around once and look back in two famous photographs.
Ron Turcotte turned to look at the clock and saw how far back the other horses were and was surprised. He knew from the lack of the other horses' hoofbeats that he was ahead, but he did not know he was THAT far ahead. Turcotte said that Secretariat really did feel like "a tremendous machine." Top jockeys say that Secretariat is the horse they would have most liked to experience riding. I've heard horse people say that all the attributes (large heart, perfect gait, etc) must have come together in Secretariat more than any other horse. They sometimes use the expression "the horse that God built."
I was at work in a restraunt with a bar in 1989 when Secretariat died. The local news came on and after announcing he had passed they played the video of the Belmont. Every member of our staff and every customer stopped what they were doing to watch the race. Almost everyone had tears in their eyes at the end. To this day I believe that race was the greatest moment in sporting history. There will never be another like him.
I’ve been a big sports fan my entire 72 years and and teams I’ve rooted for have won many championships ( even the Cubs), but this horse is STILL my fondest sport memory.
I never get tired of watching him run. He was a racehorse for the ages. I’ve read a couple of excellent books on him from the time he was born until the sad last days of his life. He was a champion in all the right ways. If I could go back and watch any sporting event today, it would be Secretariat winning the final race of the Triple Crown.
Would you mind giving us the names of the books you think are excellent? I've never read a book about Secretariat, although I read one about Man o'War that I really enjoyed, and a YA book about Exterminator called "Old Bones, the Wonder Horse" that sparked an interest in thoroughbred racing.
I think I have watched the video (the real one and the movie) many hundreds of times - I tear up all the way through. I think Red was a horse that really liked humans - because the humans around him were very affectionate towards him. Horses know which people are nice and which ones don't really care except how they perform. I love the part where announcer exclaims "He's all alone. He's almost a 1/16 mile away from all the other horses!" Red looks so relaxed at that incredible speed. Wow!
Penny Chenery devoted many years to make sure Secretariat would not be forgotten, that he would be remembered for what he accomplished. I'm sure Secretariat loved her, but on the day that Penny visited Claiborne farms to visit, it was Riva Ridge that came up to her and not Secretariat.
I just read where Turcotte said that when he crossed the finish line, he wasn't breathing hard and hadn't even broken a sweat. Hard to believe unless you go back to the Preakness. Look when he crosses that line: fresh as a daisy.
@gingercake0907 Yes. That's right. People will not give God the glory and thank Him for the miracle, sign, and/or wonder that He just showed us. Secretariat truly was a gift from God.
I never saw him in person only in the movies. I cry everytime I can't imagine what it was like to see this in person. This had to be an unbelievable moment for everyone who was blessed to witness this spectacular moment.

I would say Winx 30 races without a defeat would be better
@@jacktattis Yeah but who was he running against? Secretariat would probably have beaten any horse on that track because of the lead he had, 25 lengths ahead that means you could fit 25 horse between Secretariat and the first horse behind him. Has Winx won like that?

@Hector Rodriguez That accomplishment was more Wilt Chamberlain-like. And if you don't know what that means go look at the record books.
Secretariat never raced as a horse, age considered, Ghostzapper is the greatest racehorse ever
@@chrishartley8884 What are you talking about? Secretariat raced against older horses as a 3 year old. He still holds the world record at a mile and a half on dirt by 8 lengths. As for who is the greatest, that can be debated...but Secretariat ran in more races than Ghostzapper did (GZ has issues with injuries and did not develop as fast as a 3 year old).
Chris Hartley, you’re way off base. Ghostzapper only raced 11 times and only a handful of his races went beyond a mile. Secretariat not only had the speed but he could run for distance as well. He would of made mincemeat of Ghostzapper!
I am so happy to finally see a version of this historic race in its true colors and not washed out.

What a call by Chic Anderson..."a tremendous machine"...."...But Secretariat is all alone!" It's still breathtaking to watch Big Red race 48 years later. They'll never be another horse like him.
best part about Andersons call was...while he obviously was excited and raised his voice as the race went on...he wasn't screaming like a banshee at the end....Larry Collmus had a good call going with American Pharoah's Belmont Stakes...then ruined it by screaming at the top of his lungs at the finish...
At the 1:00 minute mark, Secretariat made his move. He had astonished people in the Derby and Preakness by coming from the rear to win. Here, he took the lead at the start and then carried Turcotte into the history books. Almost supernatural to those watching at the time and beyond belief now. 31 lengths ahead of the rest and a record 2:24 that stands to this day. The greatest athletic feat ever.

too cool, everyone must have been yelling at the top of their lungs...
Kind of like Janet Evens the great American swimmer that has a super efficient heart.
Sham also had a large heart at 18 lbs. He just didn't have the rest of the attributes that made Secretariat great.
I did not know about Sham's injury. What hard luck. So glad he went on and recovered.
He didn't face pressure. The owners did. He was more like "Oh, you want me to run!" So he did

Bill Nack. He was closer to Secretariat than anyone, and he has some amazing stories. I need to buy his book!
"Eye roll"
I thought Eddie was closer to him than anyone?
Sham deserves fame and glory for this effort- he set the pace, then he lit Secretariat's fuse- the rest is history. They were 1st cousins!
To me, it's #2, behind only the Miracle on Ice Game.
I read a few years ago of how the vets were sobbing as they put him down then they saw the size of his huge heart.

Wow!
so true Turcotte's hands were so quiet as he and Sham were competing for the lead and you had it right ( relaxed )with a tremendous sense of purpose
