  • They were the first-time bumpkins of this majestic race, the old car dealer from Pennsylvania, the trainer from West Virginia and his hunting buddy, a 39-year-old jockey who had ruled Philadelphia Park but had never before been within spitting distance of a race this rich or grand. It took only a little more than two minutes in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, however, for Roy Chapman, John Servis and Stewart Elliott to be rocketed from thoroughbred racing's outhouse to its penthouse, carried there on the back of a colt named Smarty Jones.
    Remember the name. Smarty Jones wound up wearing the blanket of roses for winning the Derby because he outran his pedigree and 17 other horses on a swampy track that he caught like a jet stream. He is the first horse to arrive at the Derby undefeated and leave unblemished since Seattle Slew, who swept the Triple Crown races in 1977.
    He also made his owners -- Chappie, as Roy Chapman likes to be called, and his wife, Pat -- rich enough to look prescient when years ago they decided to name the 100-acre horse spread they used to own Someday Farm. Smarty Jones not only took down the $854,800 first-place check for the Chapmans with his two-and-three-quarter-length victory over Lion Heart, but he also earned them a $5 million bonus from Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. Oaklawn celebrated its 100th anniversary by agreeing to bestow a windfall on any horse that could sweep its Rebel Stakes and Arkansas Derby in addition to the 130th Kentucky Derby. ''We're ham-and-eggers,'' said Roy Chapman, 77, who has emphysema and watched the race in a wheelchair. ''We never reached this level and never thought we would until we met Smarty.''

    Glad to see the Smarty Jones fans here that have taken the time to watch this. Thanks for posting. Am pulling to see American Pharoah win the Triple Crown but Smarty Jones will always be my favorite horse of all time. He too, like Alecramsay1227, made me fall in love with this awesome sport.

    I love the coverage of the Derby from this era. Classy not trashy. What has happened to the media recently is very sad.

    I know this is Smarty Jones' show and I was always such a big fan but this video reminds me how much I loved Lion Heart too. He just ran his heart out everytime and was no slouch himself.

    Funny how the owner whose horse cost Smarty the Triple Crown opens the program. Oh, if only we had known then. ;) It was an exciting run that year. Everyone I knew was rooting for Smarty. It reached past the usual fans that year.

    Always loved Durkin’s call at the top of the stretch. Can’t ever touch the 87 BCC, but this was niiiice.
    Love Smarty. Had a chance to attend the Preakness and he was awesome. So easy. Very very heartbroken it didn’t happen for him at Belmont.

    Stewart Elliott this is Barry Shulman remember me I'm proud of you I was good friends with Rudy Biaze and went to Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Florida in 1984 and bumped into a trainer who Denise Boudreau who owned a farm with Roland Hopkins , sad she passed away . I worked on the backside at Gulfstream park and met RUDY TURCOTTE the brother of Rony Turcotte me and Rudy hung out together after the morning and went to the Elloree training center in south Carolina in 1983 I weighed about 119 pounds . I've had many relationships with woman and in Lynnfield ma where I grew up .when I went to the north Andover riding academy and went into horse shows and jumped fences I won 3 ribbons. Your friend Barry Shulman. I know you won't probably get this message but I got email on October 4 2014 to go to Suffolk Downs and the ride didn't come .I was sad because I know you were there . I was sad I have a autoimmune illness heredetory illness that my grandfather had. Barry Shulman.

    What a cool story all the way around for the Smarty Jones win, from undefeated horse to a 1st time KD start for oft overlooked jock Stewart Elliott and then a 1st time entrance for the trainer at the KD... and then to see the owner on the defib have to sit down and catch his breath at the end of the race... I mean how's there not a movie about Smarty yet?

    For the courtesy of you and others who view this, I have for you the lyrics for "My Old Kentucky Home." They are below if you want to read them while listening or sing along. It occurs at the 43:56 mark.
    The sun shines bright on My Old Kentucky Home,
    'tis Summer, the people are gay;
    The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom,
    while the birds make music all the day.
    The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
    all merry, all happy and bright;
    By'n by hard times come a-knocking at the door,
    then My Old Kentucky Home, good night!
    Weep no more, my lady!
    O, weep no more today!
    We will sing one song for My Old Kentucky Home,
    for My Old Kentucky home far away.

    Smarty Jones was one darn good race horse. ( Off topic ) I wonder if the owner's will give another trainer Baffert's horse's for the 2022, 2023 ( hopefully, a bunch more year's) KY. Derby ? Spank, spank.
