- Funny Cide, a New York-bred gelding, came to Kentucky under the radar screen, but he will return to the Empire State a star, winning the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) impressively Saturday and putting himself in a position to win the Triple Crown.
The Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner and his connections -- owners Sackatoga Stable, Tagg and Santos -- had to endure an unsettling situation along the way. A week after the Derby, a story broke about a suspicious photograph from the finish of the Run for the Roses, but an investigation cleared Santos after showing he clearly was not holding anything other than his whip during the race.
"Barclay told me to try to save some ground ... then at the five-eighths to give him some loose rein," said Santos. "He just loped along and then I used my whip in case there was a camera or something. I didn't want him to get to looking around or something."
Funny Cide was sent off the narrow favorite in the Preakness over Peace Rules -- who had run third in the Derby -- but it was no contest, Funny Cide winning the Preakness by the second-largest margin in the 128-year history of the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.
www.bloodhorse....
Cried when he didn't get the triple. Rain, muddy track, fresh good horses. But - What a horse. Loved him.

Me too. They brought EM back just to be a spoiler at Belmont. I don't think EM should have been allowed to run, he didn't run the Preakness, he was fresh and rested. Secretariat, Funny Cide and Phar lap are my favorite horses. Love their stories. Sad ending for Phar lap.
Oh yes, living in New York at that time, many of us were watching the Preakness, cheering that Funny Cide may eventually win all 3.
Then the Belmont, I cried but looking back, those were great times. Love ya Funny Cide. He may still be alive, but not sure..
The year after came the wonderful "Smarty Jones"
@@walkawaycat431 YOU ALWAYS HAD FRESH HORSES IN THE BELMONT
@@chuckschafer942 Secretariat and Sham were not fresh.
@@chuckschafer942 I just believe that if you don't run all, don't run any.
Living in upstate NY, this was so exciting. I still get tears watching.
Me too.
PM - thanks for posting this. I still have it on an old VHS tape somewhere.
Funny Cide for those interested is happily living his days out at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, VA and can be visited every day. Sadly Ten Cents A Shine would later breakdown in 2007 at Winterthur, DE while attempt to change careers to steeplechasing.
Jose Santos after suing the Miami Herald would later settle out of court.
And Empire Maker of course would go on to be the grandsire to American Pharaoh, the 12th TC winner who would break the dry spell

@@Caroni100RIP Funny Cide. I was at Kentucky Horse Park over the past weekend and learned he passed Sunday, 7/16/23.
2 years in row, we had a chance for the "the little guys" to win the Triple Crown. Funny Cide and Smarty Jones. I'd have loved to see one of those groups of connections win the TC vs say the usual players, (Lukas, Baffert, etc) who get to train the top prospects. 2003 and 2004, both very memorable years. Good times.
He was my greatest Derby pick ever. Win, Place, Exacta, Trifecta, Oaks/Derby Double and Derby Futures!!!
Rest in peace champion. ❤
Funny Cide indeed has a very funny personality. Congrats! 🎊
When I met him at the Kentucky Horse Park several years ago I took some pictures of him and he made some funny faces. He does indeed have quite the personality!
The call from the top of the stretch still gives me chills.
Amazing call!
The “Nothing in my hand” gesture by Santos after winning had me fist pumping around the living room
Fantastic! Thanks so much! I love your videos.
You can't take anything away from him he did his best
Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia's quotation:
"Just after the horses for the Preakness are called to the post, the audience is invited to sing 'Maryland, My Maryland', the official state song of Maryland. Traditionally, the Baltimore Colts' Marching Band led the song from the infield. Today, the United States Naval Academy Glee Club leads the song"
Santos sitting chilly just waiting to press the button!!!
shouldnt have pressed the button. race was over at the top of the stretch. save some horse for the Belmont.
¡Gran caballo Funny Cide! Durmió al lote que le salió al paso en el Preakness Stakes ¡Lástima que no pudo en el Belmont Stakes "El Test de los Campeones"!
Great. Thanks very much, your channel is the best. Please, could you do the 2005 Derby
