  • Philly's horse is fast becoming America's horse.
    In front of a record crowd of 112,668 at Pimlico Race Course May 15, Roy and Pat Chapman's Smarty Jones made a shambles of the $1 million Preakness Stakes (gr. I) and kept his record perfect with his eighth win, this one by 11 ½ lengths. Smarty Jones drew loud cheers in the post parade, and they were even louder as he pulled away in total command in the lane.
    The victory sets the stage for a dramatic Triple Crown try at the Belmont Stakes June 5. The Pennsylvania bred has a chance to become just the 12th Triple Crown champion and the first to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont since Affirmed in 1978. The last undefeated Triple Crown winner was Seattle Slew in 1977.
    He would also claim another $5 million bonus and become racing's richest horse.

    2004 Preakness wins the second jewel of the triple crown with Smarty Jones with Stuart elliot. I knew him as a friend and i did it all . I was the best exercise rider and used for breezing on the wood and let the horse out full speed. I was happy for Stuart Elliot winning the Preakness and the Belmont stakes that day the track was not good .We thought we had a triple crown winner. Barry Shulman.

    Love Smarty Jones. He still holds the Preakness record for the longest lengths run. He was also the first since Seattle Slew that won the Kentucky Derby undefeated in the mud. I met SMARTY April 2023 at Equistar. He is still happy and healthy siring.He enjoyed the Peppermints I gave him and the cookies I mailed him later. He is a father grandfather and great grandfather. He just lately produced a daughter who is undefeated Aoifes Magic. He is living the best life at Equistar well taken care of and loved. Like his Great Great Grandsire Secretariat he still came out second even when faced with a tough situation.
    Secretariat with his loss with Onion. He was sick and should have been scratched. Penny admitted to that. Majestic Prince should have been scratched and still came out 2nd. Smarty was healthy he was going wire to wire easily but Jerry Bailey who wanted to ride him decided to play dirty along with another jockey using thier horses not to win but just to make Smarty loose. Both came in 4th and 5th. Smarty was able to fend them off but this also gave Birdstone an opportunity to go after Smarty who now was exhausted after running one of the hardest races and fending off 2 other horses and now Birdstone. Birdstone and Edgar did not play dirty but if it was just him challenging Smarty I believe he would have got second. Ironically the tactic Jerry Bailey used that day was used on him when he rode Cigar. Gary Stevens and Mike Smith had alot of respect for Smarty. They also mentioned if they were riding in a different year. I would compare this to Secretariat and Sham. Smarty is the true champion of the King of Sports and Jerry Bailey is the chump. Smarty came closer to winning the Triple Crown than Jerry Bailey and would have if not for Jerry Bailey. Smarty's owners trainer jockey and fans agree to that. One of his friends also agreed. No matter Smarty Jones is the true Triple Crown Winner to me.

    The legacy difference between Smarty Jones and Justify is 1 length at Belmont. What a chasm those approximately 8 feet make in history. For those saying Smarty Jones wasn't that good, he ran a 118 Beyer in the Preakness before losing the Belmont Stakes to Birdstone.
    Smarty Jones was a total champion. He wins the BS he’s top 15 of all time.

    • @ValleyoftheRogue
      @ValleyoftheRogue 4 года назад +3

      @@lightskintone He was NOT the best horse to not win the Triple Crown. That honor goes to Spectacular Bid, the last great horse of the great "Decade of Champions" of the 1970s. A poor ride by his jockey cost him the Crown. That jockey, Ron Franklin, was replaced by the great Bill Shoemaker. Bid lost just one more race in his career, to Affirmed in the 1979 Jockey Club Gold Cup, and then had an unbeaten four-year-old season. Smarty Jones was a good horse, but he wasn't in same league as Spectacular Bid.

    Looking back.... and heck...going forward. I hope and wish a group like Sackatoga Stables (Funny Cide) or owner like Roy Chapman could win a triple crown. When the opportunity arises, the "blue bloods" seem to conspire to not let "the little guys" win. I've watched horse racing in depth since 1997. I've watched replays over and over and over from almost every big race from 1980 and beyond. Looking back....1997/2003/2004 are my best memories from this sport. RIP Roy. I wish you coulda got the TC, but ya know...with Smarty, you created a generation of horse racing fans....and for a moment in 2004.... you had the world cheering for you and your horse. Also, RIP Bob and Beverly Lewis. They kept Silver Charm racing through his 4 year old year. ❤ And I would have loved to see Tom Durkin get to call a TC winner. :) "The whip is out on Smarty Jones....it's been 26 years.....Birdstone is an outside threat...."

    It is about people and people power, including the lucky ones. Horses have not idea. They are just happy to be, eat and serve. If you check previous triple crowned, performance and consistency were the keys. No excuses allow. Check some of those videos. It would be sad for history to have mediocre horses becoming triple crowed due to the lack of talent; but that is part of life and our society.
