He was a contract security officer. A private citizen, not a peace officer. some private security officers believe in the constitution and also take on jobs that allow them to protect others. The guard was able to defend himself as he was carrying (unlike the elderly people or children which cops attack or kill) even if he got shot in the back of the head the guard was still in a position where he could have defended himself (it is called situational awareness).
The term coward is just an excuse to ignore reality that the guard was killed likely due to the actions other cops have taken and if police accountability existed there would not be these protests and people would not want to shoot them (and people would actually care if they died).
This is heartbreaking. My father is getting called out into Oakland every night to keep watch over the protests. We're no longer telling him "have fun at work," but "come back safe." I just want this to stop...

David Dorn a retired Black police officer was shot and killed during the riots while trying to help guard and protect a pawn shop within the community. It was so sad to hear and he reminded me a lot of dad in that my dad was a retired Marine veteran and worked part time at a convenient store within the community on the South Side of Chicago. I know my dad would have done the same thing in defending his community. This man was just trying to help prevent the community from being destroyed. Majority of these police officers are good and are trying to protect the community and now they are being brutally attacked because of a few bad apples? Lets focus on those officers who committed the crime and not attack the innocent officers who had nothing to do with it? At least Mr. Dorn was acknowledged by the media as well as people had the opportunity to see what these violent riots are doing which is nothing but hurting innocent people. I served several years in the military and I could not imagine serving now? The same country that I love so much and help to protect from other countries I am now having to help my country protect themselves from one another?
Yes, I totally support peaceful marches, Martin Luther King was the Master of this and some changes were made because of him and yes we have a long way still to go. We must remember that we are still trying to undo almost 400 years of oppression Blacks in America had to endure and again its not going to happen overnight. What I witnessed from the tragic death of George Floyd is not just the violent riots, but there were some peaceful protests with people of all colors and all from all over the world who are tired of the unfair treatment of minorities in America. As an Black women that made me feel good that so many people support equality and justice here in America.
Last weekend in my home town of Chicago during Memorial Day Weekend, 10 people (majority Black) were killed in shootings along with numerous individuals that were injured. It was reported that the last time that Chicago seen that type of violence in one weekend was Memorial Day weekend of 2015. There was some mention in the media about the shootings in Chicago but not much and still no protests no marches no nothing? Why isn't anyone burning down the drug dealers homes? Chasing the gang bangers off the corners? Ensuring equality in healthcare, encouraging children to do their best in school, to make their communities proud and not destroy their communities?
I do see some things being done to try and help alleviate many of the disparities within the inner city communities but not enough. As a teacher, I see it in the classrooms first hand. I teach within an inner city school, and when I tell people that I teach, they laugh in my face and call me crazy? I'm confused? Someone has to do this job? Someone have to help our people our children to make better choices in life through things like education and voting.
So we are dealing with Riots, COVID19, unemployment and loss of businesses. God PLEASE BLESS AMERICA! Black on Black crime is the leading cause of death for young Black men ages 16-24 and for Black women, especially pregnant Black women. So are we saying that its okay for a Black person to kill Black person but Lord forbid if a White person kills a Black Person?
At the end of the day, all lives matter! and we must do a better job of teaching our children and become more diligent in helping to make changes by voting.

So far like 4 people have gotten killed during these riots, others shot and wounded, some brutally beat and its not even all that will happen. These people are using that guys name to live out a purge fantasy. They have nothing better to do, no job, and they still get unemployment so they are not worried. This is all setup from the start. With the number of veterans we have right now, some who chose to sign up because they needed a paycheck, the number of disenfranchised people with military training is higher than people realize right now. Add in the lack of support for veterans and you get people with PTSD, who have nothing to loose and view this as everything to gain. That's a recipe for trouble.
