- WTVJ goes big on the end of a nightmare that rocked the country. The Gainesville student murders claimed the lives of five University of Florida students in a macabre killing spree. Three reporters are 350 miles north in Gainesville as Danny Rolling is sentenced to death.
My mom was on the jury. She's at 1:19 and 7:30-8:30. It was awful for them too. Even though he pleaded guilty, the jury had to see all of the evidence for the penalty phase. My mom and two of the other jurors she became friends with were later diagnosed with PTSD.
4:58 the five mothers of the victims
From left to right.
Gladys taboada mother of manny taboada, ann garren mother to christa hoyt, ricky paules mother of tracy paules, dianna hoyt stepmother of christa hoyt, ada larson mother of sonja larson, wait i never seen miss patricia powell mother of christina powell
Rest in peace five angels,
Interviews Rolling had with psychologists determined that he was schizophrenic and revealed that his life began to unravel when his wife left him (he was, unsurprisingly, abusive). She was a petite brunette. Being unable to differentiate reality from fantasy, he took out his rage on women of the same body type. In the case of Christa Hoyt, she had a striking resemblance to his ex-wife according to investigators. Her crime scene was arguably the most horrific.
This aired on Wednesday, April 20, 1994.
That's stupid to wanna carry out a sentence swifly that would mean alot more innocent ppl being put to death than what have been today
Utterly horrific murders, if any crimes deserved the death penalty these did. Even so,, read about the horrible abuse Rolling suffered at the hands of his father - kicked him down the hallway when he was 5 months because he didn't like how he crawled. Daily merciless beatings with belts that drew blood from time he was a toddler into his teens. Beat his pet dog to death. I feel sorry for him too.
I'm glad we're now in a world where we don’t have to teach kids about what Rolling was because he’s dead. Children don't need to think about monsters like him. This is made known because Rolling was buried on prison grounds without a marker.
