I live about 30-40 mins away from his hometown of Williamston NC, & my dad loves Hardee's/Carls Jr, so every time we went to Williamston we would stop to Hardee's & after we placed our order I would stand in front of the Mural of the Perry brothers, & I would just imagine how cool it would be to be in their "cleats" from a small town like this having an illustrious career pitching in the majors. May He Rest in Peace.
When pitchers were men! RIP HOF Mr. Perry! A humble, "cow town" farm boy who threw 300+ innings and complete games consistently along with a FORKBALL, 2-seam, slider and curve with his full "tall and fall" windup, high leg lift and low 3/4 quarter release. Perry let dumb hitters believe the ball was "loaded up" and only "loaded up" when they least expected it.
Well stated! Modern day baseball is being ruined by stat obsessed Geeks who've never played the game, at any level. The obsession over the 100 pitch count for Starters has caused my interest in the game I've loved, Played, Coached and Scouted to wane. The average MLB Pitcher is 6ft 3 and 215 lbs., yet they are treated like a bunch of little sissies. Can you imagine a Manager coming out to the mound to take a Pitcher like Bob Gibson out of the game because he was closing in on 100 pitches? I think we all know where the ball would've ended up. Circling back to Gaylord and the Pitchers like him, you truly were men compared to the boys of today.
@@fredvance7612 Thank you and same to you! Baseball's been ruined by our "soft" society protecting pitchers who are trained by the unqualified along with stat geeks, shift bans, universal DH's, pitch clocks, showcases, college coaches who falsely believe they're scouts and arrogant broadcasters who talk like baseball is theater literature. Also, baseball changes completely favor hitters, because pitchers have been emasculated and not allowed to be men. Pitch counts should be guides and not hard cap limitations.
@Bread And Circuses @Bread And Circuses It's in both leagues, because some fans don't like low scoring games. MLB is anti-pitcher with ghost-runner, pitch clock, no shift, no more than two pickoff throws, umps checking pitchers every inning, bigger bases.
The footage of Candlestick Park in the 1960s is priceless
RIP

I got to hear him speak at a charity sports auction one time. He was hilarious with the stories he told. RIP
Great life, great career. Congratulations from a Dodgers fan. Gaylord, RIP.
a quiet legend the original work horse pitcher of his era...r.i.p.
303 complete games. Absolutely amazing.
Plus 300+ IP six times in a seven-year stretch.
RIP to the legend
Listening on Braves radio 📻 when Henry Aaron hit career number 600 off Perry in Atlanta stadium April 1971
Go Mariners! I was at the Seattle game when he got 300 !
Never forget. I had goosebumps. Rest easy.
Naturally unselfish guy.
RIP. I merely feel sorry for that dude's name.
Anytime I am feeling down....I always think......Bro, it could be worse. Your name could be Gaylord.
Believe it or not, I’m actually a descendant from the same family he and his brother came from, pretty cool!
What a name

Sadly, Perry died of covid. He still should be here.

Why do they call him Gaylord? Maybe, because he mentioned other men.

@Barton Farley Do*che, if your I.Q. was 2 points higher, you'd be a rock...
Whether I actually doctored the ball didn't matter. What mattered was that I had batters thinking I doctored the ball. And that gave me an advantage.
Gaylord played minds games
