DIY-How to bypass a pedal assist

  • This is my old electric bicycle, it is an Eco Ride made in Sweden, I no longer use to get to work since I folded and bought a new one, so, this one I decided to play with.
    To turn this bike fully automatic I simply moved the magnetic ring that is installed on the inside of the pedal to the front wheel and relocated the sensor , zip tying it to the fork close enough to pick up the Pulse of the magnets. The bike is fully automatic now. If anyone decides to do this bare in mind the only way to stop the motor is to shut the power or to hit the brakes which will cut power to the motor . Actual work took about an hour, some soldering, some zip tying and that was about it Enjoy!

    This is so simple,it's genius level.
    Most people (me) are blind to the obvious.
    Thank you.

    If you have a “pedal assist” only bike, buy a cheap “5V pulse generator” (NE555 timer) and a momentary push button. Set the pulse generator output to around 25HZ (max for mine was 45). Remove the crank sensor (cut the wires, there are 3) install the push button on the 5V line (red) and wire the output of the pulse generator to the ‘signal return’ (blue) wire. Push the button to turn on the pulse generator, and it will send the pulse to the controller and the back wheel will turn. Let go of button and it stops. Pedal assist only to throttle controlled ebike. Get fancy and instead of push button, wire use potentiometer control that twists like a throttle, with a 3D printed mount.

    turning off pedal assist is the best thing you can do to an ebike. You still pedal, but it puts you in complete instant control of how much power is added by the motor throughout the ride. Vastly better experience than the "1 thru 9" settings.

    There is another way to stop the bike without hitting the brakes. What I did was the same thing with the PAS (pedal assist sensor) but then I just took out the little button type switch that the brake lever pushes in to turn off the motor and mounted it onto my right grip on the handlebars so now instead the brake lever engaging it it will now act like a push button throttle so whenever I press the button in(exactly what the brake lever would do to engage the motor) it will start going and when I release the button the motor turns off. So now theres no pedaling and I have a push button throttle;)

    Thanks

    On my PAS bike I just pedal one rotation till the motor kicks in, then With little to no effort, I just keep the pedals rotating so the sensor keeps the motor on.
    No peddling effort except to keep the sensor turned on.
    No mod needed.

    Could be dangerous if you need to stop fast as motor is still running.

      The motor has a cut off, as soon as you even touch the brakes just a little bit the motor stops running

    I don't know what exactly is in those sensors for ebikes but if its Magnetic Reed Switch that switches on and off engine when magnet passes, those wires can be soldered to momentary switch or throttle on steering wheel. It would be much safer than putting in front wheel and factory pedal assist.
    And pedal assist is dumb idea, and dangerous when you turning with pedaling - some ebikes are unstable and you can fall off ebike. Wear a helmet always.

  • @bvgb921
    @bvgb921 2 года назад +2

    If you don't want pedal assist just unplug it, the bike will still work off the throttle. The same applies to the brakes cut off, you don't need to use either.

      In UK , the GUV decided all E bikes should have PAS , so you cant get the motor to kick in without peddling first , which is a pain in the butt , especially when pushing the E bike up VERY steep hills ( to avoid burning out your motor ) , so the only bypass is to buy a 555 pulse generator ? ,, but tge controllers ( ebay for eg ) look UNIVERSAL ? What is going on in the UK contrller thaat NEEDS the pulses ? There must be a hack ?

    How's the speed? Is it faster because the magnets are spinning faster? Does it go faster when you pedal faster ? Or isit just like on off switch kind of? I have a similar led control panel on my bike I was thinking about doing the same thing you did. Thanks

    • @shlitser
      @shlitser  5 лет назад +2

      Sorry for the delay! It does max, 25 kilometres an hour. But since theres no need to pedal it his top speed without a delay. The brake safety cut off is the only way to kill the motor when cruising so take care of the brake leads to the controller. Good luck! 🙂

      @@suqma it seems with this set up.. Once you start moving, you are on full throttle and only able to slow down by braking, yes it is wired to shut the motor off if you are not peddling and braking, but it thinks you are peddling all the time.. So will not shut off the power

    @nerdylicious1814 Год назад

    This is the most dangerous thing u can do on a bike. one wrong move and u can potentially hurt yourself and others. Pedaling controlls when the motor turns on, now imagine you going down a hill, your bike may be uncontrollable as the wheels spinn faster, wet roads may reduce your brakes and if they fail your bike is a death trap. you may end up not stopping in time or even wear out your brakes faster.
