  • Pedal Assist Sensor Ebike Magnet Mystery (does it matter!!) Number of magnets in a PAS, whats the effect on different controllers. before you buy a new controller or PAS take a look at what i found by trial and error. If your making your cycle in to an electric bike from adhoc components, i.e. not a kit. then this might help you.

It's obvious that there is a speed limiter and it's based on the crank rpm. The magnets are used for triggering the PAS and for calculating the speed. Ie the controller looks for frequency of pulses. You add magnets and the frequency of pulses goes up and it licks out.(you hit the limit) Less magnets you would have to pedal faster to hit the pulses limit. I think if you put the six back on and gear down so the crank goes faster you will find it kicks out. Just my two bits worth.

that's should not be true - the speed must be calculated by the rotations in the motor - you can have multiple gearing scenarios - the rpm of crank doesn't match the speed of the bike

Interesting experiment Kev. It's almost like it can't keep track of the magnets as you pedal faster. I'm still interested in the conversion, could be good for my commute.

Hi Kev. Very interesting. I think you are right about the controller. It is probably expecting a number of pulses in a certain range from the sensor. Too many magnets increases the the number of pulses and confuses the controller. Anyway, you got it sorted which is what matters. Cheers, Alan.

    Kev,
I believe I know what the issue is... The controller has a cut out based RPM of the cranks based on the factory supplied number of magnets. So lets say the factory is 6 and you have 12 magnets fitted it will think your doing twice as many RPM than you are. So stick with 6 which works find on the flat and when you are on a hill change to a lower gear so you pedal faster and then it will kick in and all will be fine.
    Cheers.
    Paul,,

It's probably a bit late now, but the problem/issue is that you need to go into the configuration settings in the display menu and set it to the same number of magnets you're using 5/8/12
To do this, you'll need to hold down the (up & down) button at the same time for a few seconds to access factory settings. *Some display menu switch/buttons differ but are very similar* You can change speed restrictions, performance, and so much more too...

@@MrFactotumMy Voilamart 1500w kits the same, 8 magnets, I need to make some discs and get some of those magnets - or can you just buy these discs/mags online??
My kit has no display also, it didn't come with one, I just use my phone in a holder and a programme app called "Speedview"(great speed app, free too) and the stock 8 magnets disc...
I have the same problem on a hill you have to peddle too much before it kicks in...
Seems I'll have to get looking online to see if I can get a 12 or 16 magnets disc(?), would be better for me now I'm knocking on in years (haha) being 50 years young.

@@mickyb.8014 thanks very much Mickyb, appreciate the feedback,
I would say if your ebike conversion came as a complete kit it should have the correct magnets. I made my kit up from different suppliers, so thats the main reason for my problems.
i'm not sure if discs with different magnets in are available as its a while since i did my conversion, biut i would think they should be, but like i said if yours was a complete kit i would suspect something else unless the one or more of the magnets in the disc are the wrong way (north and south), also mke sure the magnet disc is running true on the pedal crank, if it wobbles too far away from the sensor this could have an effect.
Hope this helps, good luck oh and i will check the speedview out.
      regards

@@MrFactotum it's on right and magnets are fine, just I need it to kick in faster than half a full peddle turn, so I'm thinking double the small magnets from 8 to 16 may just do the trick, it's worth a try as it shouldn't cost much, appreciated.
