  • Did Meghan and Harry bring down the British Monarchy? On March 7th, Oprah Winfrey’s interview of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sent shock waves through the British royal family and the world. Their allegations of bias, neglect of mental health and racism within the family could spell disaster for the royals. Let’s take a look at the lives of the royal couple, Harry and Meghan and at what their interview may mean for the future of the British Monarchy.
Corrections: In my haste to get this video out, I made a few errors: Prince Harry is the son of Prince Charles, not Prince William and Charles and William are first and second in line to the throne, not second and third.

The monarchy as an institution is still well-liked by most people in the UK, and as long as a majority of British people want to keep this over a thousand years old cultural tradition, they should be allowed to do so. I believe the press has a questionable role in the lives of the royals. It is necessary to have some press presence in order to show that the royals are doing some good, yet there needs to be more restraint on behalf of the press so there's a stronger feeling of privacy for the royals, in particular the younger royals. The royals, in their turn, need to stand up for privacy and tell the press to back off, AND HAVE THEIR REQUESTS RESPECTED. The royals also need to stop acting like American celebrities and use some practical common sence by not inviting the press to be intrusive and inappropriate. As I said before, it goes both ways between the royals and the press. All of this is my opinion, nothing more.

A little note, the Queen didn't just decide that Louis and Charlotte would be Prince and Princess, but back in 2012 when the Successions Act was changed so that there was no longer male-preferent primogeniture, it was stated that all of William's children would be Prince/ss, in case that if a girl was born first, she would be the future queen and titled as Princess-otherwise, if Charlotte had been first, we would have had future Queen Charlotte only 'titled' as Lady Charlotte when her little brother would've been a Prince. It's not a matter of preference but logic. Also, it wasn't speculated by the press that Harry and Meghan didn't want a title for Archie, they said as much in the announcement of his name, and this was later reiterated by her friend/reporter Omid Scobie in the couple's biography.

Not at all sure why folks keep around the monarchy which means the estates earn less.
France also has many great palaces and visitors to them but probably clears more money since they don't have useless monarchy sucking up the funds.
The monarchy are plenty rich and do own some estates privately.

David's connections to Hitler & the Nazis, Prince Philip's tragic childhood, his favorite sister's marriage to a Nazi and their deaths in an airplane crash, Aberfan, Princess Alice's torturous life, Diana & Charles' divorce, her death, Margaret giving up Peter Townsend, Andrew's connection to Jeffrey Epstein... and everything in between. Their lavish lifestyle comes at a great personal cost for all of them. Harry & Meghan had the freedom to leave. I think that's what Harry wanted all along. I think that's why he married Meghan. Cromwell had many flaws, but he wasn't really a tyrant (neither was Charles I for that matter, although Charles was rather stupid so a lot of people regarded him as such). Cromwell basically was a man who had a religious devotion to his "duty" and could not step away till things were right: he wasn't a Napoleon Bonaparte, or whatever. The commonwealth had many factions - the ahead of the time but incredibly obstinate levellers, huge amounts of religious maniacs, the partisans of the Rump Parliament and the self-interested New Model Army. Contrary to popular British belief of Cromwell as some kind of vainglorious dictator, he constantly tried to withdraw from power, but ended up having to step back in to fulfill his perceived "duties".

He was very young when she passed and I think he grew subservient to the Monarch, as it was all he had known. But getting married and having a child has likely changed his entire outlook on everything. And he was able to get a glimpse first hand through Meghan, what his mother endured all those years. Ahe couldn't protect his mother but he can protect his wife. So he did. And I don't fault him at all for taking the actions he did. They needed to speak their truth. For their own peace of mind.. Often times people will subconsciously seek out a mother like figure in their spouses. This was very true for Wallis Simpson and Edward VIII. Wallis was very domineering within that relationship. Someone is always going to assume the more dominant role. We are just so use to it being the man, that when a woman does it, it's seen as unhealthy and degrading. But it works for some people. Edward and Wallis remained happily married for 35 years. Meghan and Harry come off as a happy couple in love and wishing to live their life comfortably and their own terms, and I can respect and admire that. But it was important to her to do that, it was something she felt she needed to do. Rather than remain silent and allow the tabloids to paint the narrative.
And I think that's much what's going on with Meghan and Harry. Meghan moving to a foreign country, marrying into a huge family who has been at this life. Taking on a role of a senior royal for her husband. That's a huge transition for someone to make. I'm imagining culture shock to the 9th power. If Meghan was uncomfortable and unhappy in the UK after trying to take on being a senior royal, why wouldn't Harry leave with her? Harry did and has been doing what any good, supportive husband would do. He's married, he took vows. I'm sure he loves his grandmother and his father and brother but, he has a family of his own now. And I think that's his main focus right now. That's just how I feel. From the perspective of a parent and a spouse, I get it. Can't speak on the royal aspect of it lol

You have to explain the things that happened with Megan and Harry before they started getting all the bad press. They were incredibly praised for being the first interracial couple in the Royal Family but Megan being an American and telling things in speeches that was not true and the fact that she quit speaking to her father after he had a heart attack was kind of a big deal to the people of the UK. They hold royals to a higher standard of conduct even though we have seen them behave badly behind closed doors they haven't actually turned their back on each other in public the way she did. The wave of love she had in the beginning but came a little bit of a wave of disappointment because anybody who joins the Royal Family gets put under a light of scrutiny. But nobody had so much dirt come up on them as Megan did. And much of it came from her camp. I'm not saying that she didn't experience racism because of course she did. As far as we came this day and time it's still here and thriving in some groups. I will say that the English aren't generally racist like Americans are. As in whites aren't as racist against blacks and blacks aren't racist against White the way it is here and America. So they were deeply Disturbed and went on the defense when they were accused of it. They see us as racist Nazis over here. So for them to be compared to us was deeply disturbing. That's why you hear all these people claiming no we're not racist! They think of how we are racist here in America and it kills them. So to be fair, she did get attacked by the media but no more than Kate did in the beginning and it wasn't something that wasn't survivable as she claimed. Think about it, she used to beat the pavement to get acting jobs and she was very used to rejection. She had thicker skin than what she claimed I believe. But that's just my opinion and it's not necessarily true. I do think that they suffered greatly. With some of it a little bit amplified by them and their words? Probablybut at the end of the day nobody in America or the UK enjoys the kind of privilege that they did. To say that there complaints during a worldwide pandemic sounded a little tone there is an understatement. Sorry I wrote a novel LOL.

Many in the UK also seem to think Charles would abdicate because he enjoys his life as it is and has never expressed a true desire to be king. That all said, I strongly suspect the queen will outlive Charles (Long live Lizze) and I think it was Camilla who said the racist BS, Charles who didn't have the backbone to stand up to his wife (He's so much like his great uncle who abdicated), and William who probably tried to intervene and smooth things over and therefore also got blamed by H&M (Will is the family mediator, just like his mother... and that would explain the strained relationship between the brothers). The fact that Harry, a grieving son, a little boy, was forced to walk behind the coffin of his unexpectedly-killed mother for the very press he rightfully blamed for her death is one of the most fucked-up things I've ever heard. That alone should show people the monarchy has outlived its purpose: It cares more about its public image than the well-being of its members or the people it claims to help, to the point where it apparently considers doing charity work as "making a deal with the Devil". And it cares more about its public image because that's all it's got. All the royal family seems to do nowadays is just sit around in their own fanciness, perpetuating their own self-importance on the common people's money. If they're just figureheads, then once the Queen is no longer in this world, time for the Houses of Parliament to do some redecorating, I say.

I think the final portion of the video seems to be conflating American public opinion with British public opinion on the monarchy. While Prince Charles and Prince William's approval ratings did fall, Harry and Meghans approval ratings with the British public fell to a greater extent after the interview. Prince William's approval ratings are still around the mid 70s, while Harry and Meghan have net negative approval ratings. Also, I'm not sure where the 72% approval rating for the Queen you cited came from; her approval rating with the British public has been in the 80% range throughout this year so far (and indeed remained as such after the interview). I guess my bigger point here is that the impact of the public outcry to the interview is probably overstated, because a lot of it really came from Americans, whose opinions are ultimately inconsequential in deciding the future of the monarchy

Why should Harry´s child become a prince? The Successions Act was changed in 2012 and those there was no longer male preference primogeniture. Wiliam and Kate have enough children to follow their father on the throne when the time comes. It is just a matter of logic not to provide the Sussex child with a title.
Note: Princess Anne´s children also do not have a title.
It is up to the taxpayer to decide to whom in the Royal Family they want to give money to spend on houses and lifestyle. This was certainly not Meghan Markle. The one who pay never has to explain why one is getting this benefit and another one not. Btw, Harry is wealthy enough to pay for his family´s security by himself if he thinks they need it.
It also is cheap to blame someone being racist without offering the slightest evidence.
Andrew also had to step back from all of his duties after his latest scandal.

A number of steps would have to be taken legally and politically to abolish the British monarchy.
A party has to include this in its manifesto and successfully control the House of Commons in the following election.
Consultation would have to be held with those Commonwealth nations who still recognize the British monarch as their head of state.
While not legally necessary, it would be unimaginable that this proposal was not the subject of a referendum, and that the electorate agreed to the abolition.
Much parliamentary debate on the issue and white papers created on both the abolition of the monarchy and the form of republican government that would succeed it (e.g. how is the head of state chosen? What are his or her powers, especially if there is disagreement with the Prime Minister of the day?)
The final form of the law establishing the republic would also have to be approved in a referendum.
No major party has even broached the first step. No poll has revealed that the British public favors dumping the crown in favor of a republic.
The fallout from the Oprah interview is an annoyance politically, nothing more.

The idea of monarchy in modern day period should be a labelled devotion to public service rather popularity. Their popularity is inherent already rather delving to more publicity from the appetite of the media.

The royals are under no obligation to give Archie a title. He and his father are much lower in line for the throne that in all practicality it is unnecessary especially since most royal siblings since Princess Margaret, have refused titles for their children and grandchildren.

Meghan's feelings are very real. The rest of it, the British public has seen this unfold, we know the score. The interview had contradictions and inaccuracies that undermined their allegations. example. Meghan suggests there was a conspiracy to not give Archie his birthright when firstly, Archie has no birthright. Secondly, Charles has shown his feelings on the role of non-direct line royals for over a decade. Thirdly, Meghan and Harry can't even agree when this conversation took place and how many people were involved. Fourthly, titles aren't a guarantee of security. The way Meghan couldn't even remember who bestowed the protocols that apparently had such an effect on her life suggests to me an unwillingness to listen or learn. And Oprah didn't have the knowledge to take Meghan beyond her word. It was a poor interview

No thanks. They are ‘not’ the vital part of the Monarchy. Harry has misplaced his judgement in MM. A good lesson - marry or select a partner to fall in love with which respects the Royal Family. Being an actress and dressing up, has no connection with being ‘royal’. Jarry should be leading, not following 🧐

When I watched the interview I was kind of shocked at what she had to say. So many things have come out now I changed my mind. I think she knew exactly what she was marrying into. How could you not know. I do feel she has created a wedge between Harry and his family. With all that said. I do feel it was a little trivial. With everything happening in the US I think Oprah could have used her interviewing skills to talk about more important things going on in our country. It is interesting to watch but really Americans could care less. We have a little more important things to worry about.

Its seems to me Harry failed as a husband "not the monarchy " to provide the help his wife needed for her mental health.
So if the claim she made is true that she really felt like suicide.......Where was her husband??? Did she tell him she wasn't feeling well or did she keep it to herself thinking he can read her mind?
When my girlfriend isn't feeling well she doesn't tell my mother or anyone else first she tells me her boyfriend and future husband first, and because I love and want her to be happy healthy and well i get whatever she needs. Harry could have gotten any of the doctors that work closely with the palace to help Megan don't you think???? Because he himself had a private doctor!! to help him through his mental health.
And I think he would, he loves her enough to leave a whole country!! for her!!!!!!But as she is saying she got no help. It leaves me to wonder if she was really sick and needed help or she's not telling us the truth 🤔🤔
Or is she spinning a story to get or sympathy.

She had been having thoughts but didn’t want to trouble him until it became too much for her. Once she did tell Harry, he went to “The Firm” for guidance and help. They said their was nothing they could do as she wasn’t an employee (HR). That’s when Harry got her help by one of Princess Diana’s close friends.

If nobody told me she was part African American, I would have never known. Meghan claimed she knew nothing about the Royal family before meeting Harry. But, people that knew her before she was famous (and in her own blog, The Tig) say she was obsessed with the Royal family, and Princess Diana in particular. She even wore Princess Di's favorite perfume on her first "blind" date with Harry. The concerns about racism in the Royal family is BS. Prince Philip risked his life to fight against the Nazis in WWII. They included Meghan's heritage in the wedding. Sorry, but Meghan wanted to stir the pot (any publicity is good publicity to her) since she met Harry.

  • @tommyss4l

So yes the taxpayers give the royal family a salary, but the estimated income made off the royal family is around 100x the expense from tourism alone. Beyond that there are traditions and rules that perhaps we Americans shouldn't get involved in. As now that two Americans have married into the royal family have ended in the royal leaving, perhaps we should butt out. Or maybe the queen needs to institute a no dating people from a republic.

    • @RcsN505
      @RcsN505 3 года назад +7

There may be a point here. Americans value individualism, freedom of speech and speaking up for one's rights, things that go directly *against* the way of life of Royals. Something else that was very American that Meghan did was to *not* research the Royal Family before joining it. She has also said she had no idea who they were before she met Prince Harry. The US lives in its own cultural bubble, and almost nothing else gets in, not even things from the UK.
