It always amazes me how much pride the British take in the Commonwealth -- evidently in their minds as a symbol of the enduring glory of empire. In my 65 years in the biggest part of the Commonwealth (at least by sq km), Canada, I have never ever heard anyone even mention the Commonwealth, except for the Commonwealth Games.

For me it's nothing to do with any glory. The people you need to talk to are leaders of Commonwealth countries who like to support one another. The Commonwealth of Nations is open to countries that were not a part of the old Empire. Rwanda and Mozambique for example have joined. South Africa had been pressured to leave because of its stance over apartheid. It rejoined under the leadership of Mandela.

    • @reecen819
      @reecen819 Год назад +2

People will always compare Charles to Queen Elizabeth and that’s why I think Charles’s reign will feel insufficient and we’re all waiting for Prince William to take the reigns, modernise the monarchy and bring that feeling of normality (we are all the same, I am not superior).
It’ll be interesting what the future holds. We can easily become disillusioned with the monarchy and overthrow them, but they hold a power that exists in very few countries. To overrule the government and put them in their place. A key example of this was with her late majesty in New Zealand in 1990 relating to rights in the New Zealand southern island, with Mãori tribes and reparations. The politicians believed the tribes didn’t have rights that any NZ citizen had, so didn’t want to pay reparations. The Queen disagreed, publicly said something and no one could argue with her regarding the matter and that was that.
Would we want to give up that power over the government?

Not a Royalist but I have to say they need better PR consultants. If they were concerned with their longevity, Charles should've excused himself somehow from the line of succession while the queen was still alive. Will & Kate could've been so beloved as King and Queen Consort. They would've directly connected the monarchy to the millenial/gen z generations and ensured 50 years of "steady she goes" for the United Kingdom.

    • @ljt3084
      @ljt3084 Год назад +16

I think you have missed the point the younger generations stand for.
      Its not a popularity contest.
The younger generations do not believe a family can stand above others purely by an act of birth. The majority of Gen z are more concerned with equality. There is no equality in a monarchy.
Perhaps if older generations were even willing to hear them, a compromise could be reached.
Instead they will push to remove the monarchy first through protest, then through entering politics themselves, before William and Kate can approach the throne.
Popularity for the monarchy took a hit when Andrew was excused by too many in the older Generation. Social media has a longevity far greater than daily newspapers. The damage Andrew caused will remain accessible for ever via the internet. Proof their is no equality in allowing a child abuser to remain purely because of the protections the royal family are afforded by those who care not for equality.
Young people all use sites like reddit where opinions can be formed and discussed. Not read newspapers like the daily mail where only one opinion is distributed without discussion.
The world has changed and the monarchy is not future proof.
How can it be when it stands above and exempt from society, and not alongside it..

The talk about the leaking pen is somewhat of an over exaggeration, the man just lost his mother and has taken on a profoundly difficult task all in the same week. Give him some space.
The stress levels must be immense.
It is time however to have a serious debate about a republic and how to hold together the commonwealth in a post monarchy environment, as the French appear to do with their ex-colonial family.
It is certainly a time to time down the ballooning mass of this monarchy organisation. Prince Andrew has shown us all it’s time to really question this organisation .
As for Brexit, that shows wider problems with the British system of governance and how a small elite really do ‘take back control’ for their own self interests and with it blame the EU for what is really the British elites being the source of the alleged problems.
Going forward the entire system requires a review, removing the unelected House of Lords, introducing PR voting to create a parliament more empowered to hold the executive to account.
Queen Elizabeth was in many ways too detached from the government she was the head of; the Boris Johnson government very much required the head of state to hold them to account, this appeared not to happen. The Johnson government corrupted not only the systems of governance and the public finances but also destroyed the international reputation diminishing a once proud nation with a web of lies, deceit and corruption. It is the job of a head to state to call time on inappropriate behaviour, this not happening has tainted the monarchy and brought into question the value of having it at all.

Of that, the monarch keeps 15% to run the palaces etc - for example upkeep of buildings, paying staff, and expenses for duties carried out on behalf of the country. The rest, which is the net profit, is kept by the Treasury. Also, ticket admission to Royal estates comes to approx £50M. The archaic institution is a big money spinner. However, there should be room for a conversation. Speaking as a UK voter, I am disillusioned by our politicians and would hate for one of them, past or present, to become our President. I'm not convinced that that particular office would be cheaper and many charities would be the poorer.
Incidentally, the monarchy does ensure democracy. Bills passed democratically by the houses of parliament become law with the monarch's assent. If they are not passed democratically, the monarch will not give assent.

Regarding the financial aspect of the British monarchy, the British government gives 25% of the Crown Estate's profit back to the royals under what is known as the “Sovereign Grant” - In 2021, the royal household's public financial statement listed the grant at about $99 million - money intended to pay for the upkeep of palaces and to meet other expenses. Looking to another great republic, France's tourism dwarfs that of the UK every year on record - not to mention that Versailles pulls in more visitors than every single British royal site put together. In the event of the UK finally growing up and becoming a democracy, the most likely option for head of state will be an elected 'First Citizen', with only ceremonial powers, to represent a sovereign people. Obviously something is not right here!
Moreover, all these invaders Colonizers do is dig and empty out all the bountiful abundant natural mineral resources from the looted giant resourceful landmass in Asia-Pacific, and sell them back to Asia-Pacific nations. True, it has been their largest export, earning several hundred billion dollars, every year.
      - In my very humble opinion, Asia has been under attack from Anglo British, since they sailed halfway around the world from jolly old England in Europe, and looted this vast bountiful so-called Australia landmass in Asia Pacific region in the late 18th century? Why didn't they occupy beautiful fertile Iceland, right above them just a short distance away, with hardly any people there, even today?

This doesn't make sense, since Asian-Pacific Islanders originally and historically inhabited and resided in the Pacific islands such as Guam, Tonga, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji and Hawaii.
May I ask if Anglo clans have any laws at all for dealing with past and present notorious global cardinal crimes like Slavery, Colonialism & Colonization of vast bountiful resourceful Continents, such as North America, which rightfully belongs to indigenous Native Americans, and to Australia and New Zealand in Asia-Pacific region, which rightfully belongs to Native people of Asia Pacific?

Charles is a snob and I have never liked him. I believe that he doesnt have what it takes and would be happy to be a republic. The Queen would never act like he did over a pen and she lost her mother and sister and carried herself with dignity. Charles will cause damage...

Hi everyone, sorry to be posting this here, but - for a small project at my university (British Society and Culture course), I need to find young British people online and ask them about their view on the monarchy. So if any of you are British and, let's say, in your late teens/early to mid twenties, could you please present your opinion very briefly? I'd really appreciate it. (oh and your name won't be mentioned when I present the results in class, no worries)

Hi dunno if you still want to know but I’m 20 from a impoverished part of Essex called Basildon and surprisingly among people my age especially white teens there is actually still quite a positive and loyal outlook towards the monarchy less because of the people in it and more because of our history and culture it represents

For me, the monarchy is a remant of the British Empire. We want to move on from that. You want something to identify with, to be proud of? Be proud of yourselves. Turn the fairy tale into reality. ( Nothing against fairy tales)

The guys mother has died and he hasn't been allowed time to process it properly so give him a break! Venting his stress over a pen at this time is hardly an alarming sign

Don't worry the British people are very forgetful, he can be the worst possible monarch but the British will continue to love him, despite them living in misery during the cost of living crises. Long live the King!

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will be remembered as a stalwart of our times. She provided inspiring leadership to her nation and people. She personified dignity and decency in public life. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and people of UK in this sad hour.

She will be remembered like this only in your country's mind not by the people who's countries she ruined. Our generations still pay for that and so will our future ones. And ofc why won't you . Afterall, you guys are living on that money which was taken by forced labour and violent atrocities your monarchy did for hundreds of year on half of the world
