It would be great to know how this works in the real world. IR remotes generally need to be aimed at the sensor to work unless they are particularly strong. You never want to install a thermostat where it can be blown on by the air conditioner or heater, so it's important to know if it's going to be a problem when the thermostat is placed off to the side. I don't know why they aren't using radio controls for air conditioners because of this. It would be nice if air conditioners offered radio controlled thermostats because that would be ideal over sampling the room air every 5 minutes. I actually like air conditioners with analog controls so I can use smart outlets to control them, but they are moving away from them.

That's great feedback, Robert. I didn't get into the IR details because it's quite dependent on the AC unit itself as to the reliability of remote control.
With so many types of AC (mini-splits mounted up high, window units and portables) and so many room variables, showing only one AC as an example would not be a representative sample.
All that said, I found I had a rock solid signal from anywhere in my 20 foot space, though I always had a line of sight.
What I like about this over a smart outlet is the amount of functionality it offers. The Breez has built in temperature and humidity sensors, so it can go far beyond simple on or off.

Hi, Cielo Breez Max has two IR Repeaters on board that are strong enough to transmit signals over a longer distance in a clear line of sight. This eliminates the need to keep it directly in front of the AC unit, giving you flexibility in placement options.
