The story of "A Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" is that Michael McKean and (his wife) Annette O'Toole wrote it in the car as they drove from Vancouver to California. 9/11 just happened and flights were still grounded. She was in Vancouver filming the TV Show Smallville and she had a break but couldn't fly home so McKean drove up to get her and bring her back. They wrote the song on the way home.
I absolutely loved this movie and was so happy to have been able to experience their live performances during their tour. Fun fact: The Folksman actually opened for Spinal Tap in tour. And hardly anyone picked up on the fact that they were the same people.
Be sure to look up the performance of "Kiss at the End of the Rainbow" done at the Oscars on RUclips. One of the best live performances of a Best Song nominee ever. Sadly, it lost to "Into the West" from LOTR.
Great reaction! This is my favorite movie from this crew. I’m almost embarrassed to admit it but Mitch reminds so much of a guy I used to date back in the day. 😬
In my opinion, the best of the Chris Guest movies. I have the DVD and during the director's commentary Guest made the comment that, in this movie, Eugene Levy's eyebrows were a character unto themselves.
Not long after this movie came out, the entire cast came together for a one-night only benefit concert at a beautiful art deco theatre in Beverly Hills, that I was lucky enough to attend. Truly the ENTIRE cast was there, IN CHARACTER, and sang all the music from the film, as well as some additional material. They even had Bob Balaban playing his nervous host character, and Harry Shearer did the entire thing in his post-transition trans woman persona, as would make sense, since by the end of the film he had already transitioned. The house was packed, the singing and music-making were spot on, and the entire thing was completely delightful and hilarious. The audience, clearly made up of big fans of the film, went WILD. It's an evening I'll never forget. I'm glad you guys took the time to see these three amazing films from Christopher Guest and that you appreciated them so much.
I first saw Fred Willard on fernwood tonight and sat there and laughed my butt off. The rest of my family could not see it or hear it or something? But I knew that the sky was going to make me laugh every time I saw him. Rest in peace Fred.
You should also watch This is Spinal Tap which was the first movie he did and performed with these same actors where they also wrote all the music. Also For Your Consideration.
@@stevebryant6483 I've heard it mis-named this way before. But the only other proper name I've heard it go by is a chord zither. A true harpsichord is a horizontal keyboard instrument. Precursor to the piano. 🙂
When I was a kid, we played them in school choir (elementary school). I think the teacher called it a harpsichord. But others have said it is an autoharp as well.
There is a scene in this where Willard was told to just go in and interrupt a scene, nothing more. I’ve heard Guest talk about tight edits sometimes when Willard does a scene, they have to cut hard, because the entire crew are in hysterics.
You may want to check out a show Christopher Guest did for HBO, Family Tree. It was one season stars Chris O’Dowd. Great role for Michael Mckean and Fred Willard is in it as well.
The Folksmen were created for a Saturday Night Live sketch in 1984. Since then, they've made brief appearance again. When Spinal Tap went on tour (for real), occasionally the Folksmen would open for them, and the crowd that was expecting heavy metal rock did not know what to make of this act.
Someone may have posted this already, but the Spinal Tap guys did a tour and they showed up as the Folksmen for the opening act to themselves. Many of the audience did not recognize them as the Folksmen and booed them off stage and then they would come back on stage as Spinal Tap and the audience would cheer unaware what was really going on.
Please do Spinal Tap. I believe it was the first "mockumentary." It has Guest, McKean and Shearer in it. Do you know that Shearer does multiple voices for "The Simpsons"?
Shearer has such a wonderful voice! Unfortunately, we both watched Spinal Tap prior to starting the channel, so we couldn't really do much for it here. But we will definitely be ready for the sequel!

That's great! It's so silly and beautiful.
A Mighty Wind is the most sincere of the three, the most affectionate about what it's parodying. 💜💜
It really does show a lot of love for the music.

That must have been an absolute blast.
Jennifer’s hum gets me every time. 😂
"NNNNNNNNNNNNNG!"

That's a shame, because that song is lovely!
I was partial to "Belleville Rendezvous" myself. It was a cool, fun song.
Do yourself a favor and download the original sound track. It's awesome on road trips!
I'm glad you guys enjoyed this one. I thought you might.
I have listened to the soundtrack on Spotify a few times since we watched. It's great!
Great reaction! This is my favorite movie from this crew. I’m almost embarrassed to admit it but Mitch reminds so much of a guy I used to date back in the day. 😬
Oh wow. I'm sure you at least have plenty to talk about when that guy comes up. :)
My parents were in a locally successful folk band decades ago. This movie really captures that community in a sweet way.

This one really featured Levy so well (Guest seemed to take a bit of a backseat here), and it paid off so well.

Oh my god. That would have been spectacular to see.
@@watchthiswithjoeandkevin6 it really was!

I honestly had no idea how old he was, so when he died in his 80's, I was really surprised he was at that age. Real bummer.
Mighty wind, best in show, waiting for Guffman... All great rewatches.
They certainly are. Such great premises and amazing casts.

Okay, it sounds like you've already seen Spinal Tap so I will look for your reaction to that.
We watched it prior to starting our channel, so we are unfortunately unable to do a first time reaction.
15:57 - Autoharp.
I always called it a harpsichord. I don't know which is correct. Maybe both!

Autoharp has buttons for the chords.

I still think you guys should react to For Your Consideration. ❤
We certainly may. It has gotten a lot of love from commenters.
@@watchthiswithjoeandkevin6 I second that! It's a lot of fun.
Agree. I liked For Your Consideration.
Please do it’s hilarious

Even if this isn't as funny as Best In Show (though I believe it is), the music elevates it to another level. The songs is this are flawless.
I agree. I do think Best In Show was the most uproarious of the films, but this one was so delightful and endearing.

Being in this ensemble must really be such a blast, to pull things off like that.
The Sure-Flo song has the best melody.
Don’t leave them cold and damp,

Underrated gem!

Am I nuts, or was he doing a cringey Asian accent thing with that?
