  • Puppy love is booming in the UK, and the demand for dogs has gone through the roof since the first lockdown. More owners are starting to breed their dogs for the first time, but with so many of us wanting to buy puppies the cost has shot up and the price on dogs has absolutely skyrocketed through the roof. The popularity of certain breeds has triggered some serious welfare concerns, Follow along as veterinarian Fabian Rivers goes on a journey to document a worrying rise in serious health issues in some of Britain's most popular breeds. From barbaric ear cropping procedures, to unlawful breeding practices being taught, he takes all his findings to the government's top vet to see what more can be done to protect our beloved dogs.

perhaps the UK should now stop viewing spaying/neutering a dog as a cosmetic surgery. Many good breeders where I live have contracts requiring the purchaser to fix the dog to prevent improper breeding of their dogs/poor genetics are not being passed on ect and helps to prevent back yard breeders!!

    Cropping is barbaric.

Cropping not done by a professional in a proper setting and drugs, is barbaric. It's far less invasive than a spay. Growing up my family had dobes and they had their ears done by a vet. It never caused them any issues. While I'd leave one natural now, I'm tired of the emotional outrage by people who don't understand anything about it and have no experience with anything but pictures of bad owners who've done it the wrong and cruel way. The focus should be on 'back alley' procedures and those who do them.

@@LabelsAreMeaningless the back ally or home procedure is beyond barbaric. They used to do it preventatively with some breeds who had ear issues. Same with tail docking. I always presume that someone having it done by a reputable vet is doing it for their companions health.

There are only rare instances where cropping by a veterinarian is acceptable. Usually this is done on some breeds of livestock guardian dogs that are in areas with high wolf numbers. Encounters with wolves many times leads to floppy ears being grabbed and torn off. (Dog with upright ears naturally will hold their ears back in these confrontations to avoid this)
Very rare circumstances when it’s acceptable, but in the vast majority of cases it’s barbaric

Maybe you could encourage stricter penalties for this bad breeders? Hoarders or those that think they are a shelter are just as bad!!! Their usual penalty is “you can’t have animals ever again and you are going to be fined.” Show them you mean business and start making them the standard when it comes to making laws!! Start protecting the animals because they can’t do it themselves.

With all of the dogs (and cats!) in shelters...????? Adopt!!!! Don't support irresponsible breeding simply for profit and overpopulation resulting in overly packed shelters. Those dogs deserve Loving Homes too. Not to mention the fact that it's much MUCH cheaper!

Apparently the "smartbreeder" fellow doesn't know ANYTHING about sterile technique and therefore CERTAINLY NOT teaching the 'students' very well either.

these people make me sick the breeders as well as the buyers If you TRULY love dogs it wouldn't matter the breed There are so many dogs in shelters in need of loving homes I have 3 rescues myself and 2 of them are pure bred dogs (not that that mattered to me) What mattered is that they have a safe and loving home. My point is ADOPT not BUY

I wonder if you took a scent sample from all the pups and put it under mum’s nose whilst she was recovering would help mum recognize her pups more easily?

If a dog needs a c-section, you shouldn’t be breeding it.

One big problem with bully breeds they didn't mention is that a lot of them have breathing problems. Their soft palette is too long and their nostrils too small. Just imagine telling someone your dog needed a nose job in order to breathe.

I live in Canada and I am curious, you are calling these dogs bullies, they look like Pit Bulls, which we call them in Canada, just to clarify are these the same bread, if so it is interesting that they are so popular there as they are becoming illegal in this country and the US.

      Bullies are a different “breed”
Pit bulls are American pit bull terriers.
      Bullies are American bullies.
Similar looking dogs but are different breeds.

Here’s another question about csec. Is it possible to have a mum sized incubator where you keep mum before surgery, place pups in during surgery and then put a scent sample from the pups before cleaning?

When getting a dog research what health problems come with that breed and that your breeder has done genetic testing on the parents to minimize known problems.

So you're saying that if an animal rescue in another country has a dog who was rescued and has his/her ears done.. It's illegal for anyone in the UK to adopt him/her. Further blocking animals who need homes from finding them. Somehow this is a win? Extremes don't help anyone. Not the animals denied homes, and not the people denied the chance to adopt them.
