The relationship between homeless people and their dogs is really something special that can’t be properly described. Through thick and thin they stay together, as partners, as family. It’s beautiful.
I notice that for the most part, the dogs are eating better than their homeless humans. That's a real partnership. It's a far cry from many of those dogs who are being starved and neglected by cruel and abusive humans who have a house, and a steady income. Sometimes one can see that while the owner may be starving and neglecting their critter(s), they sure aren't depriving themselves of food or anything else. I really feel for the guy with the messy house. It's easy to let the cleaning and maintenance get away from one. But the guy sure does take good care of his critters.
I have massive respect for the person who realized he has demons he needs to work on and cannot take care of the pup while he does that. So many people end up neglecting their dogs because they are too selfish to realize they cannot take proper care of their pets.
People who torture animals by starvation should be banned forever from having any animal and as such receive regular visits from the authorities to check if they hold on to that decision. Also fines and jail time should be brought in the equation in order to make sure no other animal would replace the saved one. I think the dog the owners of the starving pittie had before, simply perished by starvation 😥
What a wonderful organization Dogs on the Streets is!! I was so moved by the way they are there for the homeless individuals and their dogs. Kudos to them for their compassion. I hope they will receive a lot of support and donations after this episode.

***Alan, have you hugged your Blue Whale today?? Love seeing the rescue portion, once they get vet treatment and begin to be socialized, it's the horrible living conditions that they're in at the beginning that really gets to me and makes me misty. There was a show on cable, late 90s- early aughts, similar conditions in either the Dallas or Houston area, and included with dog, cat issues, they were also involved with farm animals, mainly horses, donkeys, goats. But although all were very horrible, it was the horses that really struck me. Horses left for dead, no feed, no water, ribs, vertibrae, hip bones clearly visible, some laid flat that had to have mechanical assistance to get into the trailer, some, even though given immediate critical vet care, eventually died shortly thereafter. And because everything in Texas is bigger, the dog, cat overcrowding, fecal and urine covering everything, bigger houses, more animals, just beyond imagination. Conditions like this being rescued are a whole mixed bag, varying from different parts of the state, and different states. Many areas, police refuse to get involved, animal welfare agencies do not get support from any other local agencies. The Texas area that I saw was very much on top of this and did get assistance, with people getting fined, brought before a judge, some even jailed. I don't know how the Chicago and suburbs deal with this (near me), but nowhere as responsive as Texas. So, as I said, the abuse is hard to take, but I'll make it to the rescue part. Mari we have 5 at this time. Lost one back in October- due to cushings, pancreatic disease and diabetic. Lewis had slept with us since I purchased him at 7 weeks of age from one of my patients. After that---coworkers and friends gave us dogs that had been abused and/or thrown away. We LOVE each one of these tiny furbabies. We will soon loose a "Rabbit Chihuahua"--Buddy as he has lymphoma and is nearly 15. His sister was also given to us nearly 13 years ago. SHE will be a mess without her BUBBA. Our newest addition--ALSO thrown into the streets, is a sweet female white terrier. Around 10. Her left front leg never grew from puppyhood. While Odie--a Chihuahua/Jack Russel mix---is the baby of the bunch and the craziest AND most loving little boy. He was also tossed out as just a baby. A friend brought him to us--her Mom said "NO" to more additions. Odie ended up having parvo. A simple $15 vaccination would have prevented him from being so ill and US from the $1450 plus we spent to save him. WE love and NEED each and every one of these wonderful dogs. Yikes--forgot to mention Sissy. She and Lewis were our first 2. HE needed the company while we worked. SHE needed the quiet of our home. These animals fill a spot left empty after all the kids left home. When we have love to give--saving animals is a gift to ourselves
