I replaced my entire suspension because the stealership wanted a total of $4000 for parts plus labor I laughed bought the kit and did it myself so $590 car feels like new thank you chris
Honestly 4000$ isn’t a bad price to have a dealer do it. Oem parts like they use are more expensive and mechanics have to be paid. That’s not robbery it’s fair.
@@anandchundi6805 I used oem Mopar parts for the suspension they wanted to charge $2500 for that alone. The rest was labor which I understand but the price for parts absolutely not.
The MOST I've ever done are oil changes, before now. Replaced inner/outer tie rods, sway bar links and strut/coil assemblies on both sides of my mother's van using Chris' videos as a guide. Took the van in for an alignment. Service Manager calls asks to see me and says, "I don't know who did the work on this van," *gulp* "but they did a great job. It came in tracking really straight and my tech only needed to make minor adjustments. Most time when they come in, they're so bad we wonder how they got here without the wheels falling off." DAYUM, Chris - these vids WORK!
ChrisFix I gotta say you made me do it! I have not been able to even change the oil in my car. Only in a few months I went from that to complete maintainance work, including brakes and tie rods, even changed some hoses and flushed my cars systems. I am going to start to study automotive mechanics as I got so much into this. Thank you.
I love this guy, he makes everything looks as simple and not over complicated at all. Makes me want to buy a project car and apply these steps without the second thoughts of "if I am doing this right" thoughts. Love it!
hahaha, I was just thinking of doing the same. Get a cheap car and do this myself. I love his explanations, they are so simple, even for an old 56 yr old, lol
I'm so happy I found your channel. No only have I saved money doing minor fixes on my own now, it gives a good amount of satisfaction doing things myself rather than a mechanic. Not going to lie though, I still have a garage change my oil during the winter. It's worth a little extra to not lay on that cold concrete. LOL
I bought myself a suspension kit for my '91 Honda Accord EX I'm selling and I'm pleased with myself. I changed the sway bar bushings and the driver's side tie rod. Passenger side rod end is a pain but I'll be getting that and then do a test drive. Thanks ChrisFix! you're the automotive guru my man!
thank you so much for posting this man. the breaker bar, penetrating fluid and torch were an absolute must. saved myself hundreds of dollars. the dealer ship wanted like $400 lmao. parts were around $100 it was accumulating the tools that costed more but now I have em for life! now onto my lower control arms. cheers!!!!
Thanks for the thorough description on changing out the tie rod ends. Most people wouldn't try this at home, but you make it seem almost easy, Chris. 👍
An accident happened and my right side outer rod broke down! I did not have no ideas how to fix ? Chris fix is the best to show by you tube & you are the best! Thank you 😊
Good stuff, Chris. I just changed out the tie rod ends and drag link ends on my 1990 Suburban based on your tutelage. Also straightened the steering wheel that's been crooked for 5 years (after a professional alignment).
I just replaced the steering rack in my car. Man, what a pain! While I was at it, I replaced outer tie rod ends and sway bar links. Lol. Shop quoted me $1600 for the rack installed.... I bought the rack for $130 and installed it myself. Haha. I'm pretty cheap
Youre not cheap man. Youre smart cuz u saved yourself a shit ton of money and for that, you should celebrate with a. 12 pack haha. Nice man. Honestly i hate racks cuz of the fucking steering shaft sometimes not wanting to go in properly on the rack :/
Simplest explanation and video demonstration I've ever seen/heard regarding tie rods. I've never done it myself, always took it in to have this done, then aligned. I just might give it a shot.
Hey Chris. It's Khalid here. I think this is your 3rd video changing tie rods. However, you always find a way to add a new tip here and there. I personally like your old method of counting the turns. Because no matter how organized I try to be, I seem to forget a key tool back on the shelf (like that marker or corrector). Keep the good stuff coming champ!! Short and to the point!!
I replaced both my inner and outer tie rods myself. I am a decent mechanic but your video was a ton of help!!! You explain the process so well and simple. KEEP IT UP!!

ah, perfect timing. got one of these to do. thanks Chris! Also guys, there are some videos on doing an alignment at home using a string on youtube and jackstands at each end of your car. Its not perfect, but you might be able to skip the alignment shop.
Dixon Cider Thanks for sharing and I am glad it was perfect timing! As for a home alignment, it is really tough to do it at home. A change of 1 degree is hard to measure but makes a world of difference. Not saying it cannot be done, just that it's a lot harder than you would think.
This video is perfectly detailed, now i can do this stuff myself, not sure why mechanics charge so much when it's really that simple... Thanxx Chris....
just bought a s type jag for a 100 pounds failed it's mot on this part. And a couple of other bits drop link strut bushing Now going to fix it and run it for a year. thanks Chris your videos are excellent. 🇬🇧
Chris, Try using a floor jack to push on the wrench in order to loosen the nut on the inner side. This should help you instead of heating up the whole thing. Thanks for the video.
*Great Video I liked and I will check out more of your videos, I do all my own service on cars I mostly work on Mercedes and Audis funny thing I never did tie rods before so watching your video helpd me understand it, I knew how to remove it and install new but how you use a white Marker was an awesome Idea to keep the Alignment, keep up the good work.*
ChrisFix 's Penetrating Fluid really rocks man!! and is unflammable too, awesome! The lock nut got kind of stripped, thoug, I'd replace it, just in case. The marking part is SUPER important, like you said, for driving safely to the alignement place. An important job made easy, great video Chris, as usual!
I have started to take an interest in cars. I don't own one but I will and I want to get one I can work on to learn the basics for repair and maintenance. Your videos are great, easy to follow and great quality. This sounds bad but I came to RUclips for car videos because I play alot of Car Mechanic Simulator - yes I know in real life it is much more complex. Like I said I am gaining a great interest in cars and you have gained another subscriber. Thanks!
Hi Cris! First I want to say that i really like all your videos and I want to thank you for teaching me a few things. About this video...I wanted to say that a better method than marking the outer tie rod before taking it out, is counting the rotations. That what i do and when i take the car to the garage for the alignment most of the times they tell me that they actually didnt make any changes. Just hope this is helpful. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! :)
Good video. A little tip that will make things easier should the tie rod need to be replaced in the future, plus will help with aligning, is to put a little grease or anti seize on the threads before you thread the tie rods together. That will help prevent corrosion that will seize the tie rods together.
Chris you should totally do a video on how to clean interior or 10 mistakes ppl do when cleaning the interior of the car your videos are so helpful I'm getting m first car soon 😄
Excellent, this just cost me £100 for both sides on my Jag S type at a Jag specialist which ain't too bad but will do it myself next time thanks to you!
Chris thanks a lot for posting helpful videos Like this Because of you I have sorta become a DIY guy And saved tons of money... Really appreciate it And keep it up with your awesome work
Thanks for this video Chris. It helps me even with a different truck know what to do. I bought some new tie rod ends for my truck and new out of the box I can with medium force move the joint part . From your video you said that is not good. They don't freely move, but I can move them. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks for your helpful videos.
Smashing job chris, and you had the typical "I wont move" nut lol :-D I helped a mate do the trackrods on his old ford transit, heat did very little, it was a pig, i used two hammers, one in each hand and hit both sides of the nut at the same time, then picking different flats on the nut and doing it again, it gave in after 10 mins of beating ha ha :-D
+zx8401ztv Yea, it was a pain and I guess it is from all of the pressure and exposure to the elements! Sounds like you guys had some fun getting that nut loose haha
Lucky that came out so easy! Doing this on my old car I had to get a tool to press it out. Tighten it all I could, let it sit for 10 minutes, tighten, let it sit and so on. Eventually it popped out with one hell of a bang
ChrisFix Yeah, I think I'm gonna have to make my own as well. WD-40 didn't cut it for that job at least. First I tried all kinds of hammers, then the pickle forks, and eventually a tool to press it out. Had to thighten it all I could with a huge breaker bar many times to eventually get it to pop out. And use some heat. But now that I have the tools it's really no problem. All you need is one of those presses made for ball joints and you'll be able to get anything loose
Hey Chris, I couldn't find any video of you changing the CV shaft/axle/joint? As many economy cars have front wheel drive and mostly people with economy cars work on their own vehicles, that'll be a great and very helpful video for many of us
Another good trick to get the tie rod ball joint end out of the 'suction' on the knuckle is to hit the knuckle on the side with the hammer where the tie rod is attached. I am referring to the part in the middle of the screen at 2:55. It makes the tie rod pop out pretty easy. I used to use a pickle fork, but now I do it this way, and the pickle fork sits in the tool box.
Maverick Xeo Thanks for sharing. You never want to hit the knuckle because it can cause stress fractures. You always want to hit the tie rod itself. A pickle fork is even better but most people dont have one so a hammer to the stud with the nut on it is simple and effective.
I have the exact vehicle same color and all and the tie rods may need replaced soon, very helpful tip on the alignment nut! Also, mevotech supreme, besides Mevotech TTX, is the best parts for this vehicle! You can grease them as much as you want because they have a one way overflow valve
great video man, really appreciate all the effort you put into making these and that you put links in the description for all of the stuff you use :) keep up the great work!
Amazing Job Chris! , Really informative video i just love the amount of detail u give for every step Feels so professional , Learned alot from you man! Keep it coming Regards!
You're the man! Nice camera work, great audio and you showed the right way to do something...Thanks for your upload...It's nice that we have so many manufacturers making better than OEM parts now and you can have them at your door in a day!...Some of the parts on these SUV's are minimum spec..shared, saved, thumb already subbed...:)
Please note that envoy/trail blazers as do most Toyota truck tierod jam nuts are reverse to the treading of most vehicles. I would recommend using map gas over propane, as you will be there forever heating it with propane. Castle nuts generally do not seize, as lock nuts almost always do. I also advise anti-seizing the threads of the new tie rod, just in case you have to replace it again and it's a nice gesture to the aligner, especially years down the read when it needs to be aligned again. ;) Good video, though.
Wow! Congrats on 300k+ subscribers. I remember when Might Car Mods had less and that's a big reach channel. Thanks man. Even though I'm a pro now I still haven't changed a Tie rod. I'm a pro thanks to you and other great channels. Looks like I need a Torch just in case. :)
Hi Chris, thanks for all these helpful uploads. The rubber boots on my tie rods and ball-joints are all cracked and falling apart. I've been spraying them every time they made noise with wd-40 waterproof lubricant. If I continue keeping them lubricated with spray but not changing them, would the wear accelerates to cause a problem? The car (2000 Grand Marquis) is 19 years old with 110000 miles but running good.
I must say I would have backed off that boot, yet I see you are heating just to get the oil moving in. That bolt is close to the rubber boot. I would have wanted to heat the bolt so it would expand instead of the shaft. Hey, you still got it! Nice work.
todd baker Good eye. Yes, the tie rods are bad and the power steering is leaking so it has been laid up for a while! I am getting her back on the road for my friend!
Real nice video. I must emphasize GET A WHEEL ALIGNMENT ASAP, no matter how close you think the replacement looks compared to the original tie rod end. I know, because I let it go for a while and had some pretty bad uneven tire wear.
Last summer, I bought a '97 Pathfinder. The other day I noticed that after making a slow, sharp turn when the car straightened out, the steering wheel did not .... eventually, it did of course but, I was wondering what I should test first to find the problem. Thanks!
Hey Chris, awesome channel, My steering wheel is turned to the right a little bit when driving straight, how would i go about adjusting this?? thanks in advance for your help, happy to donate to a charity of your choice for advice
Great video Gday from Australia, don't think most tie rod ends come whith grease nipple these days .But nothing seems to be serviceable any more just replace which is a shame
ChrisFix I did this the other day by watching your videos! I have a question In my camry the replacement tie rod ends do not have a grease fitting so when you torque down the castle nut the boot gets compressed and ultimately breaks. any ideas of how to fix this?

ChrisFix your hammer method works better than all my pickle forks.
I have the exact vehicle same color and all and the tie rods may need replaced soon, very helpful tip on the alignment nut!
Also, mevotech supreme, besides Mevotech TTX, is the best parts for this vehicle! You can grease them as much as you want because they have a one way overflow valve
amazing Chris...i just replace my crankshaft position sensor on jeep liberty 2004..its was easy Mr Chris...thank you gor your videos...
+Supaman USA Awesome! Nice work!

Ali Kayed Awesome Ali! Thanks a lot!
I also advise anti-seizing the threads of the new tie rod, just in case you have to replace it again and it's a nice gesture to the aligner, especially years down the read when it needs to be aligned again. ;)
Good video, though.
+RangeRov49 Thanks for the tip!!!
great vid.. ive never tried it.. here in northern canada its rusty with salt and snow but rustproofing is key here
san379 Thanks! It definitely is important to rust proof stuff in the salt belt!
DE Nichols Thanks a lot bud!
ChrisFix
Within a couple weeks of this video every front end problem was a tie rod, and 2 were inner tie rods! lol
can you do a video on how to prevent your truck catalytic convertor from theft?
Your videos are really helpful
Thanks that was very good, going to try it out on my own car , keep the videos coming
Rocky Bernardi Awesome! Glad the video was helpful!
great video ! greetings from brazilians!
Diego RF Thanks a lot and thanks for the shout out from Brazil!
Love watching your videos Chris! 👍
It would be nice if you showed more work being done on 1999 jeep grand cherokee 4.7L.... Thanks, your videos are very helpful.
I like that quick start igniter on the torch
Ur #1 fan from manila

Nice .... shop quote me 250 to work on right outer tie rod + alignment..
Great vids man cuz I just went got parts and do it myself.👍👍👍
You should make a off-road project! I would love to see that.
Ricardo Olvera Yea? It is tempting!
Chris fix i love your videos
Abdallah Sweidan Thanks a lot man! I am glad you are a fan! That is awesome!
Great video. Love the wealth of info. Keep up the good work
christopher fuller Thanks! Glad the video was helpful!
Can you show how to replace a catalytic converter and more stuff under the car that can get damaged and more under the hood replacements and care
I must say I would have backed off that boot, yet I see you are heating just to get the oil moving in. That bolt is close to the rubber boot. I would have wanted to heat the bolt so it would expand instead of the shaft. Hey, you still got it! Nice work.
Sagina1999 Thanks for sharing!
Looks like this rig has been laid up for a while. Lots of rust and spider egg sack in the vents of the rotor.
Great video!
todd baker Good eye.
BAYOUMAN Yea, it is pretty important and dont worry, I have done the same thing which is why I emphasized the alignment hahaha
A good and clean job 👍
JoKeRAzzam Thanks a lot!
what i want to know is do you voice over your videos? it sounds so clear.
Nice Chris! Hey you should consider doing questions live like Eric or Scotty! Cause your just as good as far as basic car care. Cheers buddy!,
Jeff Gowsell Thanks Jeff. I would love to do that but for right now I do not have enough time. Maybe this winter.
For sure! Know what you mean man time is hard to find.
Youre a great teacher
Last summer, I bought a '97 Pathfinder. The other day I noticed that after making a slow, sharp turn when the car straightened out, the steering wheel did not .... eventually, it did of course but, I was wondering what I should test first to find the problem. Thanks!
Hey Chris, awesome channel, My steering wheel is turned to the right a little bit when driving straight, how would i go about adjusting this?? thanks in advance for your help, happy to donate to a charity of your choice for advice
+Zac Postans You would need to adjust the tie rods. I suggest taking the car in for a front end alignment. Good luck!
Thanks buddy, will let the pros sort it, not really a carpenters job haha
Great video Gday from Australia, don't think most tie rod ends come whith grease nipple these days .But nothing seems to be serviceable any more just replace which is a shame
isuzu dmax Thanks bud! Yea, it is a shame that they want you to just buy new parts every few years. I rather have something that lasts!
I did this the other day. I found a pipe wrench worked well to get the jam nut off.
Bigchuck678 That is a great idea so you can get a longer arm and more torque! Thanks for sharing!
ChrisFix I did this the other day by watching your videos! I have a question In my camry the replacement tie rod ends do not have a grease fitting so when you torque down the castle nut the boot gets compressed and ultimately breaks. any ideas of how to fix this?
Great video I watch all the time good work
kobi yossef Awesome! Thanks a lot!
it was nice and interesting like it always is!
GameTV Thanks a lot!
Great job, it does help me a lot
Great video! Only thing I'd have done different was to replace the lock nut for a new one.
