I love your advice about seeking out artists and getting direct feedback from them if they have completed the same course. There are so many scams for everything right now, not just for artists. I still pay for art courses - specific art techniques, from artists that I admire. I keep it within my budget and typically locally with artists I personally know. It sounds about right. We probably did take the same course because there was very little value in the content. I was shocked when I saw the slides initially. Never pay 4 digits for an *online* course. Period. I'm a Technical Artist in the AAA video game space and there is NO art / subject that niche that will ever warrant that amount of money. Understand what you want to achieve, have a good idea of the skills needed and collate a RUclips syllabus. Once you've gone through it and understood where youre lacking knowledge, then find online courses that will fill those gaps. I have been to university, while beneficial, the self study route is where I saw my most growth. I've also been tempted with fancy courses but *always* do you research. There are people who are quick to take your money and run. Sorry to hear that this happened to you and I hope you get your money back ASAP
Thank you for sharing your wisdom. The self study route is where I'm seeing most of my growth as well. This experience was a very expensive lesson to learn but these people won't catch me slipping again.
@@tarralu Oef... I can well imagine and again, I'm sorry this happened to you The best way to go about the self study route is, once you have completed a course, do a project which will in corporate all the skills you have learned and it will simultaneously push you even further into areas you never imagined. Once you have done this a few times, the alure of online courses quickly fade away and you will be able to deduce who is really knowledgeable and who is a scammer, simply praying on people with a flashy video. All the best with your art!
thank you for this vid. well, there are so many scammers out there, - but to be serious, I do not understand in the slightest why these scammers are so successful - I do of course understand that these days, people jump on this "opportunities " to become rich with their art. There is nothing wrong with this, I mean the starving artist - may not need to be the reality anymore. But there is NO SUCH THING, like quick success in the art world. At least not when we talk about serious collectors, really good money for a piece of art etc. - if you see something like this, than someone had someone who paid huge sums to a Galerist, PR Agency bought social media followers, and so on. It took me over 10 years, until this one serious collector came along, bought my work, and of course as it is in his interest - he startet the ball rolling. Being an artist is hard work, the life on an artist has nothing to do with this "lazy picture" of getting out of bed not before 2 pm, than getting stoned and laying on the studio floor trying to find inspiration....its actually hard work, and there is no quick fix for success...

I took a set of design and business courses that were a borderline scam. It was basically lots of design briefs with v little instruction and absolutely masses and masses of filler and repeat content. The people running it are very wealthy and their business model seems to be about selling art and ither dreams as a career possibility to everyone. I think quite a lot of art and business courses fall into this grey area. I rarely see anyone speak out against the course I did because they don't want to get blacklisted from the industry.

There is so much of this going on these days. I took one of these courses and thankfully it wasn't in the amount that you spent but it promised similar results about teaching you how to sell your art but all it really was was a beginner's course on how to build a portfolio and not a very detailed one at that. They even had students from that session be small group leaders so we didn't even have a working artist teaching us outside of the main videos and the small group part was an extra we paid for optionally! It was such a waste of time I didn't even get mad about the money - in fact I forgot I took it until I got an email about it a few weeks ago 🤣

I know absolutely nothing about how much people are willing to spend these days on original works of art. If the people in the market are looking for investment in art as a way of dodging taxes or dodging the economic ups or downs or what. Creating art is a time and material investment and that to me would be the starting point for how to appraise a work of art. And it seems to me that getting it sold as quickly as possible is the best return on investment. How would I, a no talent idiot sell my art? I would collaborate with other artists, rent a venue and do some advertising and have an impromptu art gallery and sale, en masse...collectively. All the costs of the event transparent, and the booking known to all...and having no event until a critical mass of artists and art was there to present. Then advertise it. Then when people show up, let them haggle...andif more than two or three people want it, let them bid. It is only worth as much as people are willing to pay for it.
I helped a friend sell her art at outdoor fairs and events, some were just for art. The ones who make the real money are the venues- renting out spaces. The second big money makers- the food trucks. The economy is not good for sales now- so research any events or courses.

I still pay for art courses - specific art techniques, from artists that I admire. I keep it within my budget and typically locally with artists I personally know. I am very wary now of any other online courses.
It sounds about right. We probably did take the same course because there was very little value in the content. I was shocked when I saw the slides initially. It is a shame especially for those that paid almost 5k. I believe 3 of them did his more advanced program and paid $10k and afterwards he shared all the information from that program on YT.

@@tarralu Oef... I can well imagine and again, I'm sorry this happened to you
The best way to go about the self study route is, once you have completed a course, do a project which will in corporate all the skills you have learned and it will simultaneously push you even further into areas you never imagined.

Like some movie nightmare if you ask me. Horses do hurt themselves but I had a witness. Anyway.
