“Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here”. One of the greatest single song lyrics ever written. Maynard is a lyrical poet.
Agree with others that “The Grudge” would be a great next step. A marvelously crafted song, and the outro is pure unchained musical chaotic goodness!! Cheers!!

I'm jealous, thinking about all the songs you're about to hear for the first time. Tool songs keep getting better the more times you hear them, but that sense of discovery/wonder/confusion/amazement the first time you hear some of these songs is just a different feeling. Welcome to the family, we've had a seat at our table reserved for you from the beginning 🤘

Don't feel bad about the confusing time signatures. Danny, the octopus, Carey is the master of polyrhythms. You should review the Danny cam video of Pneuma. I would review the studio version first though, the Danny cam is a whole new experience.

don't want to criticize the other bands and their stuff, but i also had similar feeling.. anyway the guys from TOOL had a taste in music and art, they were inspired by old bands and artists.. in such cases i always remember Newton's phrase "if i have seen further, it's by standing on the shoulders of giants"
so i generally agree with you because they have raised the standards a lot

Just like with Guitar Hero, you jumped right into Expert Level Tool with Lateralus and to a lesser extent, Right in Two. If you want to keep going with the expert level Tool, react to The Grudge. Whereas Lateralus may be their best song lyrically, The Grudge may be their best song instrumentally and vocally. That and it’s heavy AF.

There's one thing that Tool is to musicians, It's that they're inspirational. If there's one tip that I can give you on your journey, it is to jump around their discography because it goes from super raw to super complex. Your first two reactions were on their more complex side. And maybe throw a lyric video in there here and there if you're interested in that

Ok! Im subbing for Tool. Do it all. That said, I know nothing about the technicalities of music. All i know is there is no other band in the world that makes me feel the way i do when listening to Tool. I often wonder if all people have the ability to feel what i do when i listen and i think the answer is no. As long as it hits you that way, that's all matters. Watching someone morphe into a Tool fan and experience their art is the best gift! P.S. Tool is like fine wine, they get better and better with each listen.

Great reactionI hear what you're saying on Adam. Rarely if ever shreds. He goes to work on the riff. Switching it up, wreaking havoc on the beats, laying tasty easter eggs in the melody.
Best journey is to start at their major debut, Undertow and listen in order. No filler even back then! Plus, as a musician yourself, hearing you reacting to their growth musically, lyically, and in tone would be a blast! Plus, after three songs in there's an epic performance of "Sober"(Live, Reading,= '93) to slip in there. Enjoy the journey!
p.s. I was counting 11/8 for a long stretch, but don't quote me.

It’s a running joke with Toolfans and time signatures. People love to break it down to “oh this bit is alternating measures of 7/8, 8/8, and 9/8 - this is amazing!” but really Tool doesn’t seem to write music solely to be obscure or difficult.
I believe there’s a quote rolling around from their drummer that he mostly plays by feel. He just writes a good rhythm to the song and because he is who he is, it ends up being this twisty masterpiece of writing that just felt good to him.

Lateralus is not "older" lol 😢making me feel like a grandpa and I'm only 46! As someone who has been a Tool enthusiast from the beginning Lateralus is the beginning of the newer era. It goes 1: 'Opiate' and 'Undertow' - OG Old Era, 2: 'Ænima' - Mid Era (and the pinnacle of Tool genius), and 3: 'Lateralus' and everything after - Era Novum (a "techincal" evolution, but not stylistically). Don't get me wrong, I love all Tool and each of the new era albums have several amazing masterpieces on them, but NOTHING compares to Ænima (despite my username)...

If the song was inspiring to you, that's high praise. What more could be asked from a song?
For years now, I felt that if you were to write down all the possible things that make a great song, Right in Two is the Tool song that would contain the most of those things. So it might be the best Tool song, if such a thing can be decided this way. Close contenders would be Descending, Lateralus and Aenema, in random order. And yet, my personal favorite is not even one of those.
