The 3rd generation Ford Mustang, the Fox-platform or Foxbody, is really starting to take off in popularity. The car has always had a solid fan base, but now they are starting to become collector items that are pulling serious investment money at the big auctions like Mecum and Barrett-Jackson. With a wave of new buyers, there's always a question of what to look for when buying one. This video highlights the most common problems that you'll encounter when looking at a Foxbody to buy.

As long as it doesn’t have an LS swap your good to go
Great video! Thanks!!
Glad you liked it!
Very informative and good video, thanks!
Well presented.
Thanks! I wasn't sure I wanted to make this video, but I have enough questions on the subject to put it together. My cars were in a good spot to make filming easy.
Great precis Mr BMS. Compared to any other Ford, these are easiest to repair.
Thank you.
Great job!👍🏻
Thanks! Hopefully I hit the high points.
I would add door jamb areas to your list. Mine needed a major repair from rust in there.
Good point. Are you in the rust belt or do they salt the roads which would add to the potential for it?
@@BasinMotorsports Yeah a rust belt car. Unfortunately someone drove it in the winter. I'm slowly restoring it.
Love the content. I own 3 notchbacks. I have driven 13hrs each way for one in Virginia. The other ones where down south...
3? That's a dream garage.
26 hour round trip drive for a clean car thats dedication man, bet it was worth it
In regards to the sunroof and t top cars the channel around the glass is a separate piece you can just replace it without replacing the whole top I have removed these pieces before the drain holes in the corners have rubber tubes running through the car to the bottom the bottom of the front strut towers have a ledge on the suspension side behind the spring perch that collects dirt and debris and holds water then they rust from the wheel side in towards the engine bay sometimes people back upon curbing and other things hitting the spare tire well separating it from the trunk floor or the well will be rusted from a trunk lid or hatch seal leak
Great vid bud!i own a 88lx vert now looking to scoop up a 92lx coupe now which is a super rare car.
Just keep looking until you find that elusive '92. They are out there. Sometimes they are just hiding out of sight.
@@BasinMotorsports thanks man appreciate the reply back I actually have my eye on one now that a local guy is selling that has 79 thousand original miles on it but the car has been modified heavily it's a 5-speed car and he wants 20K for it
Sometimes that kind of price tag makes me think it's crazy, yet other times I think it's about right depending on the car. I could see buying it if it's built just how you want it, and especially at those lower miles.
@@BasinMotorsports yea i am having a hard time justifying spending 20 Grand on a 28 year old fox LOL but it's a beautiful car FOR sure.its been stroked out to a 331 stroker with a vortech super charger MAKING 500hp to the wheels .the owner said it was all done professionally at a shop but has no build sheet
@@survivethrive2468 Yeah, the lack of documentation is tough to swallow for that kind of money.
Love that green ....is that plastidip?
It's vinyl wrap.
this renewed interest in foxbody mustangs have driven the price up to ridiculous amounts. cars ive seen a few years going for 3500 usd are now getting asking price of 9k. it's truly ridiculous.
It's a good and bad thing. Bad if you want to buy, and good if you want to sell. The '86 Mustang I'm working on has definitely appreciated over the 4 years I have had it. It should bring a little more than it would have 2 years ago.
It’s been awhile since your wrap job. What are your overall thoughts on it now?
I'm still very happy with the wrap. It's pretty beaten up on the front of the rear fenders from rock chips (front tires throwing rocks), so the next wrap will have protective film applied in those places. It's starting to peel up at a couple places on the rear bumper, but nothing major. Once I have the next widebody version done, I will re-wrap the car. I just haven't decided if I want to change the color or go with another material brand. I'm using the same brand on the gray '86.
What is that "divet" on the top edge of the apron (in front of Shock tower) from 3:25 ???
I assume it's there for strength from Ford. It's always been there on my '80. I would have to check my '86 if it has it.
@@BasinMotorsports I have one on my 87, passenger side. Clean Carfax...suspected it was from an accident...why I asked. Would be interested if it's on your other one. Thanks!
My '86 has it also.
@@BasinMotorsports I've been googling engine bay pictures since I asked you and I think you're correct. This is most likely something that probably helps during a front end collision.
i've got a '79 fox LX four eyes. i put a SVT 5.0 crate small block with GT40 aluminum heads. roller lifters, cobra rockers and race built C4 trans. the rest of the car has 5 lug, disc brakes, 17x9 rims and an 8.8 posi rear. i want to keep all the 'innerds' for a cobra kit and thinking about selling off the california body. anyone looking for a body?
I'd put it up for sale on a few of the Facebook groups. Clean rust free bodies are definitely getting hard to find.
Hey Canaan great & informative video! my ‘81 hatchback is going along well, except for one thing- when i shift to reverse it jerks just a little bit, and it stalls a couple seconds after i shit to reverse. What do you think could be the cause of the problem? Idle? Lines? Carburetor perhaps?
It really could be any of those things. When I first got the '86 running, it shifted hard to reverse or drive. I asked my local transmission shop about it and they said to check every vacuum line to / from the transmission first since they can harden and crack. I would start there first. If every line seems good, then look at the idle or carb. The transmission vacuum lines go the distribution block where the brakes and engine connect too. Any of those lines leaking can affect other things.
Basin Motorsports thanks for the input, I’ll get looking into that
@@esmeraldalozano6184 good luck. Let me know what you find.
Sunroof? No No
Some people love the sunroof and T-top models.
Yes, but do they like the water leaks and mildew that go with them?
They can be managed, but you have to be ready for the leaks and plugged drains that eventually come. Mine were bad enough to cause a little rust on the floor. Since replaced, no issues.
