Red Barchetta - Rush

- I've always been disappointed that Rush never produced a story based music video for this song, which is my favorite. I've done all the research into the song and the short story from Road and Track that inspired it and it is available on the wikipedia site for the song. I've always believed it could be made into an amazing Sci-Fi futuristic movie if done by the right director like Spielberg or Lucas (I actually sent my idea to SKG with no reply). I’ve dreamed it in my head so many times...
I finally saw the opportunity to demonstrate what could be done if the powers that be would get together and put in the effort. I created this on an iPad Pro with iMovie in one weekend after finding the right video content, along with some creative editing. I purposely didn't try to refine it too much given that it is not my own content and I don't have the means or access to create original content. I just wanted to create the concept, not make money from it.
I also realize that the Ferrari in this video is not a Barchetta, but the video clips were perfect for the video as I imagined it, just wish I had access to a real Barchetta to do this. Petrolicious gets the credit for the amazing video footage as well as Derek Hill for the amazing driving in the Ferrari 250 GTO! I would love to get together with the powers that be to make the real video that should have been made, as I imagined it…
I do not own the rights to this song, or video images and I do not intend any copyright infringement or monetization, this is just a concept/tribute video of what could have been done. The links to original content are posted below.
I dedicate this to my Uncle Ray, who inspired my visions of motor madness and made me the car guy I am today...

Sad update… I just found out today that my Uncle Ray, who I dedicated this video to, passed away back in January 2 days after my birthday. He was the one and only male figure in my life that inspired me to work on cars and to enjoy them like I do. I will miss him dearly and continue to try to live up to his image. Thanks to everyone for supporting my video these last two years.
Sorry for your loss. Condolences
God bless him.
Scary how RUSH depicts the end of the car hobby, in the not to distant future
Looks like we're getting closer everyday... Thanks.

Back in the mid 80's I picked up a 1965 MGB roadster. Used to blast this song every chance I could while the top was down. Had my best girl beside me. Too bad she is gone. The car stayed. I still blast the song going down the road.
So poetic. Thanks for sharing. You know the short story that inspired the song by Richard Forester actually featured an MG roadster.
Also, sorry for your loss. I know how hard it is. My older cousin was like the dad i never had, and he died from heart complications. Loved Rush and Boston and all the other 70's and 80's arena rock bands.
THANK YOU. My wife thought I was watching something bad by the sounds I was making..... PURE PLESSURE... BEST RED BARCHETTA VIDEO EVER...
Thank you so much for your support! I just made the video the way I thought it should’ve been made with what I was able to find online. The video from Petrolicious was really the best part and was perfect for the song.
I think I'm up to 3 speeding tickets now from listening to this song-one of my favorite ones on the motorcycle. Makes me twist the throttle harder whenever it's on.
I know what you mean, I call it my "100 mile an hour" song...
Was searching today to see if someone had something like this. Thanks for putting this together! RIP Neil!
Sad to hear about Niels passing. Unfortunately that means a movie will probably never be made now.
These lyrics describe an experience few people under 30 today will ever live.
Sad, but true... I have had the privilege of driving a Ferarri once in my life and have never forgotten it. Thank you for your support.
If anything this is the reality since they’re trying to make it so hard to drive these cars
@@everydayitguy that’s awesome
we're in the red barchetta timeling. time to hide hotrods in old farms.
I own a 2016 MX-5 GT 6 MT at 23 today. I love it. So reliable and has the character of an old car with the TCS off, Used to have a 1993 NA Miata too and it has a lot of the same charm c: You can even get some 4 wheel drifts going in the new MX-5. This is such an awesome song to play in what will be one of the last affordable pure drivers cars made in the modern era for sure. I love to play this song with the top down screaming down a back road and rowing the gears 😎
The one motorhead song that comes close to the feeling of pushing a hot machine close to it's limit. Brilliant! Thanks.
Kelly! Currently blissed & sentimental. Reminiscing my first listening to Rush. Great video.
Motor Laws.... coming to a blue state near you.
Back in the early 90’s when I drove an ‘89 Thunderbird Supercoupe on my way down the shore (NJ) I would always start Red Barchetta at a certain road winding through the south Jersey pine barrens. Windows and sunroof open. Cassette blasting.
Shifting and drifting... I think we all have that special road or car that takes us there, mine was a windy road that connected Laguna Beach to Lake Elsinore California called Ortega Highway... I had one magical night when I took that roadtrip to "Unwind", and ended up having the Ride of my life!!! Not a soul on the road and I owned it and drove like a bat outta hell and cranked this song... Thanks for reminding me of that night!
Nice job. Back in the early-mid 80s, I was really into Rush and I used to crank this on my cassette deck in my modified Red/Orange Datsun 240Z as I drove the back roads at high speed. The car is deep blue now, but with a fitting 6.7l engine.
Great song and a great mix of Derek Hill's Drive through the mountains in the GTO 250.
Thanks. I used to build and race Datsuns back then. I raced a 1200 B110 in Autocross, then a 510. I ended up with a 1600 Roadster.
Wow! Fantastic video. I've been a Rush fan since the mid-70's and Red Barchetta is one of my top three most favorite Rush tunes. I fell in love with the song when I first heard it and still feel it's the best driving song ever! You did well with the video, well done! I'm a drummer, too, and Neil Peart is my biggest inspiration. Despite his loss... he's still an inspiration to me and to many others. I've always felt a crazy connection to Peart and had discovered in the 90's, surfing the web when the internet was still young, that he and I shared the same birthday! September 12th, 1952... and mine Sept. 12th, 1962, 10 years later. Love your video, man.... Thanks for bringing me down memory lane... the fast lane :D [Pun intended].
Thanks Elton, I’m glad you enjoyed it and it brought back good memories! It does the same for me every time I listen to it, which is daily. I am going to redo it soon and make it better and more polished, keep your eyes peeled. 😎
This song is a helluva ride!!!!
Thank you Neil, for some of the best lyrics in rock history. RIP
Thanks, agreed...
Just read a few comments and it sounds like there are a lot of people with their own "vision" of a video for this song. Such an inspirational band. Thanks for the fun video.
Thank you too. I know a lot of people who felt that way too, which is why I made it.
I feel the same way...about this song, RUSH, N. Peart...they were my first real rock show in ‘82 on the Signals Tour. My first girlfriend turned me onto them, which came to be thru her best friend’s older brother. That’s how music works...it finds the people who need it.
This song is a masterpiece! The visuals they create are phenomenal.
You could conclude the same thing regarding the song itself.... created (before the "music" law)
(before music went to hell and is all synthetically, digitally created these days)
"from a better vanished time".....so true
Thanks for your support.
I'm sure that many fans of this song share your passion to see it realized in animation, short film or movie. I, like you, have dreamed of that, while listening to the song, many times. Here's hoping it will some day be realized. Until then, thanks for sharing this well-done video! Your passion for the song and it's content shines through the editing.
Thank you so much for your support and kind words. I truly appreciate it and am still planning on refining it a bit more soon, as soon as things settle down a bit...
Awesome job. It does the song justice. I remember doing a cross-country drive with my dad in the '80's, and we were coming the highway to the sun on the Canadian side of Waterton-Glacier Park and we got passed by a red either 250 or 330 GT about the same vintage as the one in your video. All I could think of was Red Barchetta, and the irony it was happening in Canada 🇨🇦.
Cool, thanks for sharing your experience. You should watch the movie "The Last Chase" Lee Majors and Burgess Meredith in a cool cross country drive/chase. Reminds me of Red Barchetta.
I know it's Rush but . . . YES! YES!
Thank you Kelly 👏🤙🏆
Thank you for putting this video together 👍
Yes finally a video that does the song justice
Thank you very much.
Beautiful iconography of the song...the more commercials I see for EV's the more I think of this song. I think it's all a little premature though, folks overestimating the grid and such. Anyway, I think we'll all be able enjoy our own Red Barchetta's a little longer...
Thank you Joey. I agree with you and hope to have my own someday as well, tell them….
Awesome job. I used to put on headphones on and listen to this record non-stop. I imagined so many things wearing that tape thin.
I’m glad you like it. I play this myself multiple times daily just to reminisce about the good ole days. I am going to redo it soon and do a much better job. Keep your eyes on this channel... I wore out 2 vinyl albums and a cassette before CDs came out.
I don't think you can do this song justice by making a video...... The video in your head is a tons time better unless you script it like a mini movie........ Kudos for making this...
Tino LaFratta thanks for your comment. I wish I had the means to do more.
Just stumbled across your video. Really well done! Thanks for posting it.
Thank you.
I wish I had the resources to do a better job. I am going to post a revised version after I can clean it up a little soon, just need the time to do it...
Thank You! Your video is significantly closer to the music video, or perhaps short film that I have always wished was crafted to provide adequate visuals to Red Barchetta, my favorite song by Rush. Crafted by Neil Peart, with news of his passing, I sought just such a video as a balm for my soul.
I believe in the song, the Red Barchetta is a convertible? None-the-less, it is a beautiful car! The scenery, the image of the farm, and the ending by the fireside are very close to what I have often imagined!
It would be amazing to be able to choregraph driving maneuvers to match the lyrics!
I am both amused and pleased by the "Art Deco" Locomotive of the Chessie Line (C&O RR) as a stand in for the Turbo Freight.
An Audi as the stand-in for the Air Car two lanes wide is not as close, but still rather amusing.
I am impressed by your filming what you did, and sharing it with us.
Thank You!
I'm sorry I missed replying to this until now. I appreciate your observations. As I said in my comments, I wasn't going for perfection, it was a spur of the moment project born of pure frustration and the realization that if I wanted it done, I would have to do it myself.
I made the best of what I could find on the internet and was fortunate to find the video on Petrolicious's site that seemed to be perfectly suited for the song. I definitely could have done better on timing the scenes with the music, but I got as close as I could with the time I had and the fact that I was just using iMovie and not a more sophisticated program.
The Turbine Freight and Alloy air car were a case of me using some artistic license and wanting to stick to real vs. CGI creations. The locomotive was a nod to my interest in all things Steampunk/Retro-futuristic and fit better than using a more futuristic "Bullet" train style one. The Audi was a curious find in that it was a real concept car and if you look closely, you will find it is "Two lanes wide" on the track! Small details I like to include whenever possible.
I will probably take another stab at a more refined version soon. I am working on another project right now with stop motion animation that is fun, but challenging. Thanks again for your consideration, sorry for the late reply.
A few years ago, there Was a video perfectly set to this song but it was taken down. :(
Loved it, thank you for your time in putting this together. One of my favorite songs and reminds me of being a teen and pretending to drive an old broken down Chevy pickup that was in my great-uncles barn :)

Thank you.
I've wanted to do a computer animation video of this song. I've got the story boards in my head but lack the tools and time to make it a reality. Good on you for making this video.
This would make a great Animated movie if done right. I think it would be one of two styles, either old school Japanese style (Speed Racer) or high tech CGI animation. I am currently working on a stop motion short myself which will literally be "Computer Animation" in the sense that I will be animating computers... 🤓🖥

Sigh. I may be part of the last generation that knows the joy of driving a manual transmission car.
At least the old style, the new ones are not the same. They don't have the same raw mechanical feedback that you get from a good clutch...
@@everydayitguy That's true. Hydraulic clutches can't compare to a clutch cable, even thought back in the day I carried an extra clutch cable in the car.
No big loss. Shifting is a drag.
“…stir some gears….”
Getting onto the freeway, red light goes green. Revs go up to four, bury the throttle as you control the revs with the clutch - you slip it some, as this is a small 1200cc engine and it needs to spin to have power. Clutch goes home all the way as yo hit five and a half, you then shift to second, revs come to five, shift, revs to five, grab fourth as you merge with the flow of traffic at fifty.
It happened faster than I wrote this.
Enjoyed that. nice job!
Thanks Jim, glad you enjoyed it.

I wonder if Alex and Geddy would be willing to reflect on how close to home this song hits when applied to todays INSANE world! Because make no mistake about it, our governments will attempt to make gasoline powered cars illegal!
there was a movie called "The last Chase" that this song always reminded me of. Basic plot was in the future cars were outlawed and a racecar driver hid one under his garage floor then years later dug it back up and raced against the government to make it to "free California" there was a F-86 saber jet that the government resurrected to try and stop him.
I know, I love that movie! I thought the same. This song needs to be made into a movie!

Someday there is going to be a kid doing this for real after EV's take hold in the future.
Not probably going to be “against the law” - but more a matter of getting the supplies needed to drive such a beastie. I’m thinking fuel, especially. That will either need to be synthetic, or “gray-market” stuff.
Of course, there’s always high-test alcohol… rejet the carbs…

@@kellyr9905 Nonsense, this is the best video interpretation of the song I've ever seen. The Audi as the air-car is a nice touch. If you play around any more with it, some pix/vid from some the star wars universe would edit in nicely, especially for a gleaming alloy air-car - like a landspeeder or something more bulky, say from the Mandalorian.
