In this episode of Brad & Lex, head shakes are so so prevalent as the duo experience and express their thoughts on the concept of this rock classic while trying to grasp it. This is apparent but doesn't halt Brad's signature "side to side sway". Lex,s curiosity doesn't "Rush" to making her get into anything other then her "mercy bop".

This song is science fiction set in a future where cars are illegal. Neil Peart conveys more imagery in this song than a lot of writers can do in a short story.
Neil wrote this based on an article he read in a Road & Track magazine. The lyrics are so visual you can just close your eyes and picture this movie!

Hi @@rwfrench66GenX - understood, and I agree with you. I was merely teasing you about your description of this track - that it evokes a movie. Neil has famously noted that this cinematic flavor/intent of many tracks on the album inspired them to name it “Moving Pictures”.
This is what awaits the USA if things continue as they are.
Well, they didn't get it, which is fine. Rush is unique, not everyone digs it. This song is basically a mini-movie, a story set in a dystopian future of where cars are outlawed. Props to Neil for packing in such a descriptive story narrative with his lyrics into a 5 min rock song and that's part of what makes Rush so unique. Musically the riffs and changes are very cool with precision drumming. Great song from a great album.
Rush does dystopian well. This seems like a 'child' of 2112.
This song will come true in a way very soon, as electric vehicles take over and some day in the near future gas powered cars will be outlawed. So the only way to drive them will be either on some special tracks, or to take your uncle's barchetta out for a run.
You are way off topic for this song. I honestly am not trying to be disrespectful, but this song has absolutely nothing to do with a dystopian future where cars are outlawed. It’s about a young man that discovered a vintage Ferrari in his uncle’s garage. Then they had drinks and took it for a drive. It’s not that deep.

There seems to be a lot in the song that confirms what he said.
@@jwest8438 Then why was he singing about breaking the law? Why was the car so carefully concealed? Why was this an amazing event that he continued to participate in? It's okay, not everyone gets the same meaning from songs.
This is the one Rush song where I can close my eyes and see the whole thing unfold…One of the Greatest pieces of storytelling ever…
My favorite rush song. As always Neil Peart is insane on the drums. I once thought I would write a sci-fi novel based on this song. When I started researching it I found out Neil got the inspiration to write this song from a short sci-fi story. So ended my writing career

Put together a 100,000 word first draft, then life got in the way.
New Year's resolution is to come up with a final draft and see where that takes me.

You could try a prequel or sequel. I used to write all the time when I was a young man. My friends all told me to pursue the writing arts as a career. I didn't listen, and now I regret it. Go with your instinct, and give it a serious attempt.
The Barchetta is a classic example of a car built for speed, a hot rod, made by Ferrari. The first car to leave the Maranello factory in 1947 was a red, V12-engined Barchetta.
and it just got lapped by that Ford GT-40 ;)
Maserati also made a Barchetta in 1948. The body is much better looking than Ferrari but it's not Ferrari so...
It's basically a referance to body style as well.

The "Red Barchetta" could be any of several cars, but the most likely intended is a 1948 Ferarri 166MM "Barchetta". The word literally means "little boat" in Italian, but when used of cars refers to a small, open top, two seater - a Mazda Miata convertable could be referred to as a barchetta.
The lyrics are based on a short story, which tells of a time when personal vehicles and gasoline engines are outlawed - thus "I commit my weekly crime".

The story appeared in Road & Track Magazine written by Richard Foster referencing a time when Sports Cars are outlawed for being too dangerous ...
In the original story, personal vehicles are not outlawed, they're just bigger and safer, so large & padded that they don't get hurt in collisions. Older cars are at risk.
@@TriptoMoon yes, this is a change from the story the song was inspired by, in which cars were still gas-powered and privately owned, just bigger and more padded. Hard to say what "air car" means - powered by compressed air? Hovercraft? Inflated? Although farming could be done with electric motors, too, if they can power giant cars to drive down rural roads at high speed. The song is more about imagery than making perfect sense. Probably Neil was inserting more of the Libertarian/Objectivist ideas from Ayn Rand like he put in 2112 and Anthem, envisioning some kind of socialist regulations that effectively banned individual farming. One might assume "hopping the turbine freight" and "eluding the eyes" to get "far outside the wire" indicate people are now restricted to living in the city and using trains, but then who is driving these alloy air cars? I used to think they were some kind of police patrol but that would be quite different from the original story, so who knows? Since drivers are never mentioned, they could even be automated/autonomous drones.
When vehicles are outlawed, only outlaws will have vehicles.
This song is based off a short story called 'A Nice Morning Drive' from Road And Track magazine in the November 1973 issue. It is set in the future when cars that run off gasoline have been outlawed. If you want to read the story I'm pretty sure if you google it you will find it.
What's funny is there was a movie with this same basic concept that came out the same year as this album. It was called "The Last Chase" starring Lee Majors ("Six Million Dollar Man") and then popular child actor Chris Makepeace ("Meatballs")
It's been some time, but I believe the story was about safety features making newer cars so sturdy that drivers started using older cars for target practice. I need to read it again.

The guitar solo is supposed to sound like a car going through a tunnel...very cool concept for a solo...why Rush was one of the best ever.

These three men were some of the most talented artists. Just three guys made all of this. I was lucky enough to live thru that era, when world class bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Rush made their debut albums. It was otherworldly to put those albums on a turntable and listen to these new sounds. All of today's music is run thru computer software, to artificially keep everything on time and auto-tune it all.

Rush is just a fantastic group, when you listen to them, you'd never think there's only 3 guys playing. They're so creative, and they know how to tell a story through their music. This song is set in the future where cars were illegal. Rush's songs were often futuristic science fiction stories set to music. That basically describes their epic "2112"
I always thought took place where combustion engine cars were illegal, not all cars.
Every time the band played this song at Madison Square Garden over the years, the whole place lit up.

The hard part of “analyzing“ Rush with first time listening, is their complexity of the music and the intertwining of the lyrics, rarely does a rush song rock you like a hurricane… so too speak, you have too let the song take you, in it’s entirety on a journey…. Sometimes smoking a fatty an sitting back with your headphones on, while enjoying a glass of wine helps to let you be carried away to that special place 😉
Ladies and gentlemen, RUSH is such a great band. This came out during 7th grade for me 1980 and this entire album "Moving Pictures" one of the greatest progressive rock album ever. I could go on all night about RUSH.
Whenever asked about what it's like to ride a Harley through the countryside, I always quote these lines...

My fave all time Rush tune ...reminds me of my late father and his love of old sports cars ....I actually began to cry a lot ....what an epic story put into song format!!!....brilliant!!!!....thanks guys!!
Rush manages to deliver not only a totally listenable song that's easy to bop too, but with the plot of a top tier short film at the same time. It's brilliant.
A favorite Rush tune and for sure an all-time driving tune... paints such a great picture and story from start to finish... 1 brilliant track off the brilliant Moving Pictures album.

If you're ready to get your mind blown, try the masterpiece by Rush, "La Villa Strangiato" off their Hemispheres album. No lyrics, doesn't need any, just 3 unbelievable musicians applying their craft.
You have to play the complete album; it's a masterpiece!

The excitement on Lexs face is just magical reminds remind me of myself 48 years ago on Christmas morning 1975 my mother bought me a rush album I've never heard of rush I asked her why she bought me that particular album she said it was because she loved the owl on the front of the album cover Fly-by-night She loved owls Anyway I took it in my bedroom put it on my stereo put the headphones on been a rush fan ever since and will be till the day I die thanks to my beloved mother God rest her beautiful soul.

This song embodies the emotion of driving for those of us who see cars as more than an appliance.
One of the more accessible Rush songs as it’s easily understandable. Bass, drums and guitars are top-notch. Best musicianship you possibly get and at the height of their powers. “Mechanical music” is not just a lyric…it’s a way of being.
It's the perfect rock/pop/prog song... so many well done parts to it, so much fun to play as well
My favorite Rush song. There’s an old Lee Majors film about a society where the citizens were forbidden to have vehicles with gas engines, but the Government had helicopters and gunships.

These two perfectly encapsulate music for me; Lex with her emotional and physical reaction, and Brad with his quiet, cerebral approach. It's yin and yang.
If you want an incredible musical experience - play side one of 2112 - its 25 minutes - but you will never be the same. That is the ultimate Rush masterpiece.

Lex trying to comprehend the depth and complexity of the story set to music, while Brad reads the lyrics with wonderment, his jaw on the floor? There are two kinds of people in the world, those who have experienced 2112, and those living in hell. ;)
I don't think they would get it. If they decide to give it a try I hope they read up on it first so they understand.

When this album was released, I was 13 years old and RUSH became everything to me. The lyric writing is second to none, Neil had a way of writing that didn’t alienate anyone but rather made young people think on their own. I would love to hear your reaction to this RUSH song, Cold fire. I’m giving nothing away from what I believe the lyrics are talking about. Enjoy

Red Barchetta is the song that got me into Rush. My "gateway " song. Now I can't go a day or two without listening to them.
I discovered this album as an early 80s teen, takes me way back. This album is a classic and one of the best ever made.
DO NOT listen to this while driving a back country road! You will look down at speedometer and find you are going 110 mph! One of my favorite Rush songs, it's worth a second listen... pay attention to the music change while he is driving.... actually gives you a sense of shifting gears and mashing the gas! These guys together wrote some fantastic pieces both musically and lyrics!

That entire record is a masterpiece. So many 70's Rush die hards, but Rush hit their stride in the 80's IMO.
As a car guy, this is one of my favorites of theirs. The freedom you feel when you're behind the wheel with the open road in front of you, feeling at one with the machine. The thrill downshifting and punching the gas pedal. It's intoxicating.
A barchetta is a style of Italian sports/race car with little to no windshield and no roof that was prevalent in the mid-20th century. For an example of one, look up the Ferrari 166 MM barchetta. (Never mind, you did. I should've waited til the end to comment lol.)
Back in the 70’s Neil Peart read a short story in a car magazine about the future when small sporty cars are outlawed and replaced with large safety vehicles. Neil read the story and said to himself that he should write a song like the story and filed the idea away in his mind. Years later he writes the song. Decades later his wife gives him a “dual-sport” motorcycle as a present which sits unused in the garage for years. Later, within the same year, his daughter is killed in a car crash while going away to college and his wife dies from cancer. Neil is walking aimlessly around the house and sees the motorcycle and starts to ride. It becomes his salvation. He rides everywhere, from Canada to the southern tip of S. America, other continents, and between cities while Rush is touring. The man who wrote the original short story is sitting around and his friend asks if he’s ever googled himself. They put his name into google and one of the results is the lyrics to this song and it says Based on the short story by (and his name). He’s heard the song before and didn’t even put together the fact that it is like his story several decades earlier. He sends an e-mail to the Rush contact address on their website never expecting to get a reply. But the email gets to Neil and he contacts the guy and says (We’re playing at so and so arena near your town, do you want to come and meet, I’ll get you backstage passes?) The guy shows up to the Rush concert and he is riding the exact same make/model of motorcycle that Neil rides, a BMW dual-sport. They become friends and ride together all over the place. Neil has written several books starting with his first “Ghost Rider”. By the way, on like the first page or two he clears up the fact that almost everyone mispronounces his last name. It is Peart, like ear, not Pert like the shampoo.
The story is "A nice morning drive" by Richard Foster, it was published in the November 1973 issue of Road and Track, Neil tried contacting Foster during the recording of Moving Pictures but failed to do so, they finally got in touch in 2007 and Foster spent two days travelling with Neil through the backwoods of West Virginia between stops on the Snakes & Arrows Tour, most of what you have written is nonsense.

I would like to chime in here, if I may. As a 63 yearish guy, this brings back the time when one of my younger brothers and me went out to listen to this whole album at midnight on KDKB Phoenix. At an abandoned runway, we listened to the whole album premier, a blunt between us. Thanks for the memory.
I've actually never been a huge Rush fan (though I respect them immensely), but I've covered a bunch of their songs in various bands. Out of Subdivisions, Tom Sawyer, YYZ and Red Barchetta, this was always my favorite to play. :-)

Red Barchetta isn't a song most people like on first listen, but it definitely grows on you. Another of their songs you can say that about is Freewil. Great lyrics in that one

So I see all kinds of comments with people explaining the song to you guys. I also heard it was some science fiction that Neil had read where in the future cars were outlawed. The "turbine freight" he refers to at the beginning I would guess is a steam powered train, and later in the song when he "runs the deadly race" is when the authorities (police?) in their "alloy air cars" chase him while he is in his uncles Red Barchetta.

The story of the song takes place in the future. Driving a motor vehicle is banned and very few people own cars anymore, but tbe
protagonist has this
secret, his uncle owns a Red Barchetta and lets him break the law every week. The 'air-cars two lanes wide' are presumably a form of law enforcement that pursues him. He escapes, leaving them stranded by the narrow bridge at the river. The song really expresses freedom, independence and rebellion. i love the way the dramatic tension builds to the final climax, Neil is just hammering the crap out of those cymbals by the end...amazing.
Its still awe inspiring that such full on rock music is coming out of just three people.
Geddy Lee (bass & vocals) & Alex Lifeson (guitar) wrote a perfect song for speeding down a highway... so Neil Peart (drums) wrote about a sports car made in Italy by Fiat, and was inspired by a story he read about a future where authorities crack down on speeding fast in the countryside... Peart himself was an avid biker - he spent years of his life speeding thru North America during tough periods of his life, and would often travel between Rush gigs that way as well.
I told my son when he was 12 if you want good rock music with a story listen to this. He did and has been a Rush fan since then(20+ years ago).
This blared out my neighbor's house. "Red Barchetta" I mused. Darting over I descended downstairs... turned out my neighbor and his band were performing the song live 🎵 🎶 🥰🤟🏼 and the local police followed shortly after 🚔 🤟🏼
This was the first RUSH song I fell in love with. Made me a FAN FOR LIFE.

Now that it's spring in the northlands when we get a 65+ day, the windows go down, the sunroof opens, a curvy country road and Red Barchetta cranked on premium sound.

The car in question was a 1948 Ferrari 166(look it up ,its beauty) Nowadays,in mint condition worth 10mil. In the concert for this song,the band had a huge screen,showing dotted lines representing a road ,as if you were driving down it. Apparently, if you were high enough,on the right stuff,you got quite a reaction to this visual. XD
Neil prophesied that one day gas engines would be outlawed and it would be illegal to drive one. This is forty years later from when this was written. In ten years Neil might be spot on.
Oil will be around for a lot longer than 10 years. It is just too critical for the global economy and military purposes. Although, it may get too expensive for the common man to use it...which is I what I believe their (those that despise oil) goal is.

I think there was a movie like this too. Burgess Meredith and Lee Majors played in it. Lee had an old race car that was outlawed, and Burgess was trying to destroy it. From the late 70s or early 80s.
In the automotive industry, the word "Barchetta" is used for a two-seat car without any kind of roof. In the case of this song (Red Barchetta) a classic early Ferrari from the late 40's, early 50''s.

Another good song from Rush is "One Little Victory".
The Red Barchetta was a 1949 Ferrari 166MM racing car designed specifically for the "Mille Miglia" (thousand mile) road race. It won. It also won the Lemans 24 Hour and the Spa-Francorchamps.
This is one of my all time faves from Rush! The story is too damn cool!
The storytelling in this classic Rush track is wonderful in that Rush takes us back on a trip to Grandpa's house to take out out his classic racecar for a spin, a race ensues and then a chill ride back to Gramps to sit by the fire. Rush is a world treasure.
"80's after school energy"
The song is based off of a Road & Track short story from 1973 called "A nice morning drive". Set in a dystopian future where the government has instituted so many regulations on safety features that cars are unwieldy and few people still drive for the pleasure of it. The story is about a guy who drives an old MG Roadster on some back roads but comes across people in the newer 'improved' cars who intentionally try to crash into him because they know they'll be safe but it will destroy the old car.
Modern Rush is good also… Stuff from clockwork angels like ‘seven cities of gold’

I love the ending bass in this song. the song builds and then it drops off. then Geddy does some cool bass trckery. it is just a perfect ending.

Good you finally listened to this, I have been requesting in some of the lives. Some deeper songs by Rush are "Limelight" and "Closer To The Heart", a deeper cut that I love is "Entre Nous" (Between Us). Any list like this would be not worth a dime if it does not mention "Red Sector A", take a 2 part reaction, one with a lyric or official video the second part watching a video with this song layered with some scenes from the HBO show "A Band of Brothers".
For me, essentials also include Fly By Night, Subdivisions, Marathon, Time Stand Still, and Distant Early Warning ;) (grew up in the 80s!...in Canada).
Rush are story tellers with their music, at least that’s how would describe it.
I love the fact that y'all are checking out Rush. With Rush, you should always be "hyper focused" on the lyrics. Peart was known as The Professor for a reason. Plus, the dude was into cars and motorcycles, big time. When on tour, he travelled from show to show by motorbike. He wrote many books about it. Interesting guy.
I've been listening to RUSH for about thirty years. They tell really cool stories in their music, all their albums are good.

I’ve been waiting for the two of you to hear this song. As a huge Rush fan I’ve been listening to this song for 40 years. It’s one of my favorites. As a teenager in the early 80’a this was my go to driving song! Lex needs to listen to it again and she would like it more.

A blast to play on drums as well. Learned this one back in the mid 80's. Intricate hi-hat lick towards the end so out of left field and totally awesome. lol

Yep, Neil Peart was a car guy. He had a pretty great collection that just recently sold
at auction. He liked to drive fast. He read an article in a magazine like Car and Driver,
and thought up this song. A future where cars are forbidden, but hidden in a barn
was a car, hidden, to remember a time and experience long ago.
The wind in my hair, the leather, hot oil, steel, etc, all experiences of open top
driving of old cars.
RUSH is in the top 3 of greatest and most talented rock bands. Their 9 album run from debut to Signals is the best in rock history...IMO.
