My dad was an Irish cradle Catholic and loved Dave Allen as did we as kids. I think I his humour derived from the unquestionable hold that the Church had on Irish life. His humour wasn’t aimed so much at people with beliefs but more at the religious institutions that held so much undeserved power and influence. He was such a funny and witty man, much missed.

Great reaction, Britt. There are two other British comedy duo’s I think you should look out for. The first is The Two Ronnies (Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett) who are masters of the comedy sketch and word play. Ronnie Barker himself wrote many of the sketches but all of them are so, so, funny. The best sketches are “Four Candles,” “Crossword on the train,” “Racing Duck,” “Crossed Lines,” “Mispronunciation,” “Cockney Rhyming Slang,” “Wedding speech,” the list though is endless. The boys would also do a big singing sketch at the end of each show (usually with them dressed up as women) which are also very funny.
The other duo is “Morecambe & Wise,” (Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise) who were slightly similar to “The Two Ronnies,” (both were from the BBC) in that they would do comedy sketches but they would also have the big stars of the day (this is back in the 1970s/1980s) that would come on and act in Ernie’s terrible plays (wot I wrote) and basically would send themselves up to be ridiculed because they wanted to work with M&W. So many sketches to see, but my all time favourite (and many’s favourite) is the piano sketch they did with noted orchestra conductor and scorer of film music, Andre Previn. It’s a very long sketch but it is so, so, funny. I think you’d enjoy seeing both these duo’s. Please check them out.
Much love from the UK. 🇬🇧

I am an atheist and my knowledge of the bible comes from Sunday school for 10 years and going to church. As I got older I asked more questions which were always brushed away by the the pastor and the youth workers, so I read more of the bible, not just the fairy stories they spoon fed us, like Adam and Eve, Noah, the ten commandments etc. If you read all of the bible you know deep down that it was written by men with the limited knowledge of science, and not dictated to them by an all-knowing deity. Also the morals in the bible are based on the morals of the time, where women were classed as possessions, slavery was approved of (it even gives instruction of how to be a good slave for your master, and how slave owners should treat their slaves and when it was OK to take sex slaves). Sacrifices, and stoning to death of homosexuals, women who have been with another man, etc.. Man's morals have clearly outstripped the morals written in the bible, therefore they couldn't have been written by a god who has been around for eternity, because the morals would be absolute, not evolving with time.

    • @chrisparti
      @chrisparti 26 дней назад +2

@timcarr6401 You do realise that most scholars now believe that all the Matthew scriptures were not written by him but by an unknown author 60 years after Jesus's alleged death by somone who had never met or seen him.. I'm now 62 years old, I've not bothered reading the bible for over 42 years... I have read it all previously. The Sermon on the Mount was supposed to have been a massive historical event at the time. Similarly, Palm sunday, however, no mention at all of either event in any Roman records (of which there are many from around that time), odd that isn't it, it's almost like it never happened.

@@chrisparti "Matthew's occupation as a tax collector qualified him to be the official recorder of the words and works of Jesus. There is a good historical tradition that Matthew actually wrote Gospel material. This comes from Papias of Hierapolis as quoted by the church historian Eusebius.
We do not know precisely when Matthew was written. It's dependence on Mark and its failure to mention the destruction of Jerusalem (especially in connection with Jesus' prediction of that event in chapter 24) suggest a date
shortly before A.D. 70. Antioch is the most likely place of origin. Early in the second century Ignatius of that city refers to Matthew as "the Gospel." Also, the Gentile-Jewish character of the Antioch church accords well with the contents of the book." ( p.370 of "NIV Compact Dictionary Of The Bible -- by J.D. Douglas & Merrill C. Tenney).

@@timcarr6401 From Bart Ehrman, New Testament scholar:
I don’t think Jesus ever gave the Sermon on the Mount.
That’s not just a crazy idea I came up with one day. It’s a widespread view among historical scholars, for reasons that would not be hard to figure out. Just think about the logistics of the issue for a second. The Sermon goes on for three entire chapters. These are not concise chapters; in our Bibles today, they are 111 verses in total (48 + 34 + 29) - saying after saying after saying, one after the other, some one-liners, some extended instructions, some parabolic-like illustrations.
It is an amazing collection of Jesus’ teachings, by far his most famous set of teachings in the Bible, probably the most famous set of teachings to come down to us from all of antiquity. I am not at all interested in detracting from its beauty and importance.
According to Matthew, this is Jesus’ first public address. It happened at the very beginning of his ministry. By standard calculations, that would be about 27 CE or so. The sermon is found nowhere before Matthew - it’s not in Mark or, obviously, the writings of Paul - or, for that matter, anywhere else in all of ancient writing. It is just in Matthew.
Let’s think about that. Historical scholars almost universally think Matthew was written after Mark, probably in the mid-80s or so (for reasons I won’t go into here: but I’ve discussed it on the blog before and in my books and online courses). That means that the first instance we have of the sermon is 55-60 years after it was delivered.
Matthew was not from Israel, he did not know Jesus, he is writing in a different language from Jesus, basing his account on what he has heard and read from others. And so my question is: how could Matthew possibly know what was in the lengthy sermon that Jesus gave 55-60 years earlier in a different part of the world speaking a different language? There was no audio recording, and there were no stenographers. Those who would have been listening to it (if he gave it) would not have thought that this is a sermon that would be around for 2000 years. They were just listening for the first time to a teacher whom they had just heard about, as he was giving a talk.
Even if Matthew HAD been there (how could he have been? Think about life expectancy in antiquity), how would he remember exactly what Jesus said? Not just in *general* but in *specifics* - saying by saying by saying, word for word? If you believe that Matthew was divinely inspired to record what Jesus actually said, fair enough. That’s a conversation stopper. But if you like to think in historical terms, well, it just ain’t credible.
My 19-20 year old students sometimes have difficult accepting that. Hey, why couldn’t he just remember it all? Why not??? So I say to them, OK, did you hear Joseph Biden’s inaugural address a couple of years ago? Great. Write it down.
And that was two years ago. So let’s make it more applicable to the situation of the Sermon on the Mount. In 1965 Lyndon B. Johnson delivered the first State of the Union address to be televised. Millions of us were alive then. Many millions of people heard it. We have records of it, reports of it, and, of course, recordings of it. Some of you heard it at the time. Please write it down for me.
Havin’ a problem with that? Exactly.
So, did Jesus deliver the Sermon on the Mount? Well, he certainly may have given some sermons on tops of hills at times. I rather doubht there would have been multitudes and multitudes of people there for any of them (as indicated by Matthew) or, if there were, that very many of them could have heard him very well without a sound system. (If you haven’t seen the opening scenes of the Life of Brian, you really *have* to. This is not just a funny movie, it is *brilliant* in its depth of understanding of the historical situation of first-century Israel - and the Sermon on the Mount is just the start of it. For what it’s worth, the Sermon is the only scene in which Jesus himself appears in the movie. And the listeners can’m make our what he’s saying: Blessed are the Cheesemakers! And Blessed are the Greeks!)
It is obviously quite possible (probable, I’d say) that Jesus may well have spoken at times to groups. And he certainly may have delivered many of the sayings we find in the Sermon on the Mount today, probably onnumerous occasions. But the collection of the sayings into a single Sermon is almost certainly Matthew’s own construction.

Dave Allen's religious humour was pretty gentle on the whole, and all the better for it. I'm never sure if he was an atheist - maybe more an agnostic. He described himself more as a religious sceptic. He did say he was "what you might call a practising atheist" and often joked, "I'm an atheist, thank God."
I think he was quite respectful to those with religious beliefs and whilst the Irish tv channels would not broadcast his shows, presumably because of pressure by the Catholic church in Ireland, the BBC was widely available in Ireland from UK transmitters in Wales and Northern Ireland and he was apparently very popular in his own country. He used to finish his shows with the delightful line "Goodnight, and may your God go with you!"🙂

In it the writer was expressing how much he liked the joke about popes, vicars, priests, and nuns. And it was signed by a Rabbi.

To answer the question you asked about whether people can judge something they haven't experienced, I think the answer is really nuanced.
If someone's gathered enough life experience (not years, but experience itself) to have an accurate perception of what they're judging, then yes .
That said, the world is full of sheltered people who judge things based on an echo chamber, projecting insecurities or a viewpoint not their own, then no.
The louded people tend to be in the second category.

at least 3 murderous Crusades, the now famous Speedo priests, the dark ages mass killings, the keeping of slaves, the brutal convent Gulags, the mass killings of Natives all around the world, not the stuff I'd call Christian in any tones.

"You cannot judge what you don't know" is my life motto, basically. But that includes "knowing by research", so without trying yourself. Like, you cannot know if you like opera without having seen an opera, but also, you should know drugs are bad, without trying it, as there's enough proof of the statement. The opera example is a matter of taste, the drugs example a matter of facts. Both are valid. But in both cases, you need the knowledge, either gathered from personal experience or from research/education.

You can come to conclusion from data and evidence. Personal experience is not necessary. Listening to soldiers talk about the horrors of war is evidence enough that war is terrible.

In the Pope's analogy, the black cat is proof of the non-existence of God. He's telling the atheist he's blindly searching for something that isn't there to be found.
But in the atheist's reply the black cat is God himself. He's telling the Pope that God isn't there to be found but apparently you've found him anyway.

I wish I could enjoy it like any other mythological story such as The Aeneid or Iliad or the like, but every time I get to some morally repugnant section like the ones setting out guidelines on how to treat your slaves or what minor infractions are capital offences, I recall that millions upon millions of people take this monstrous nonsense literally and it is still guiding lawmakers to this day and I simultaneously want to laugh, cry and vomit.

Enjoyed your reaction. Dave Allen was brilliant and, like any good comedian, he would always leave you with things to think about. Yes, he was Irish and was raised Catholic, although (as I understand it) he went on to be excommunicated twice.
In answer to your question - reaching conclusions about something you've never tried is kind of a slippery slope, I feel. For example, I've never used hard drugs, but I don't have to, to know NOT to do so and will discourage others from doing so. OTOH, I also strongly believe in the individual's right to make their own choices, pursue their own faith, express themselves as they see fit, and so on - as long as they do not harm others in doing so, so there is that. Not a simple answer.
As someone with agnostic leanings, I choose to believe that God (or the Universe, or whomever) does indeed have a sense of humor. Based on simple observation, it's just not necessarily a NICE sense of humor. :)
One aspect of Dave Allen (imo) was how he would always finish up his shows - "Good night, God bless you, and may your God go with you."
