Dave Allen would sit in the chair telling jokes and making observations on life but these were interspersed with sketches featuring him and his co stars. I used to love the sketches!
I used to watch this on tv. I remeber one sketch of a man going into the confessional and asking the priest "Is it a sin for a man to sleep with a young beautiful woman out of wedlock?" And the priest answers him "Of course not." A big smile breaks out on the mans face and as hes just about to leave the confessional he bears the priest continue "As long as ya just sleep."
At the start he says a guy is walking into a bar but sounds like verbatim "-and a fella walkin' into a bar". 10:09 after saying when they lowered the casket into the ground saying "In the name of the father, the son and the holy ghost." and then says "And I for years used to bless myself 'and in the name of the father, the son and into the hole he goes."
I cannot remember which show it was? I remember his glass magically filled its self up on the little table beside himself and I have never forgotten it as he had that great grin on his face! R.I.P and thank you for all the fun you gave us all! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌😥
Dave Allen was extremely popular in the UK. He became very popular at a time when most comedians did little more than recite jokes. His raconteur style was unusual back then. What set his comedy apart was that in addition to making you laugh he also made you think.
My Dad loved Dave Allen and he was a devout Catholic ☘️ another great attribute of Westmen is their sense of humour. Thank you for that I subbed because you reminded me how funny Dave Allen was, watching him as a kid I didn't get most of it but my Dad's laughing was infectious ☘️🌹☘️to be sure
His sketches are phenomenal. My all-time favourite is the person with the can collection on behalf of the Masochists Society. I'll not spoil it so I'll leave that there for you to check out for yourself.
the look on your face during the Garden of Eden joke, when he says "...i didnt put him there to be happy!" made my day =) love your reactions, hope the kitties are doing ok =)
"...and the priest said 'in the name of the father and the son and the holy ghost'. For years I blessed myself saying 'in the name of the father and the son and into the hole he goes.'"
Something of a criminal for his ideas on religion in Ireland, in Britain Dave Allen's routines were founded on observing the total absurdity of it and the English (largely) enjoyed it. He was a profound thinker even beyond that and I think he was a major influence on British comics in the following decade.
Grew up watching Dave Allen At Large and The Benny Hill Show on PBS (US channel) as a kid. I always preferred Dave show over Benny's. Such clever jokes and his skits were just hilarious.
Rural Ireland has it's own lore so it might only have been his village that had the funeral superstition. I don't know why but some how it makes me very happy to see you laughing at what made me laugh in the 1970s. Dave Allen was the story telling master. There are compilations of his sketches available ruclips.net/video/PVF4-Nx6_Ys/видео.html
He got banned in Ireland when he rightfully so mocked and attacked the church, my niece pretended to me she didn't know who he was, being your typical religious Irish woman, lol
ti be naughty for a moment 2 nuns are out for a bicycle ride and take a side road, one says to the other this is a good ride we haven't come this way before, the other says no we haven't it must be the cobblestones
He tells a joke about being a child and sent to a catholic school - it's hilarious also. Also, teaching a child to tell time on an analog watch - makes you question how you learned it.
Hi Mandy, it`s always good to watch people react to Dave Allen. His first Tv show I saw was in the `60s, (The Dave Allen Show). Then in the `70`s, his new show was called (Dave Allen At Large), this one definitely had sketches in between his joke telling periods. The theme tune from his `70`s Series, is used as his introduction tune for the `90`s clips, you can find with the orange background. You can find compilations of his sketches on YT in 4 parts, well worth checking out. If you just want something to cheer you up without reacting, whole episodes of his shows are available on YT.
It's lovely to _experience_ your laugh! 😂 IIRC, all of his series had sketches, except for the "audience specials". It's so long ago I'm not sure, but I think as much, or more, sketches than sit-down on the series I vaguely remember. There are 4 compilations of "The Best Of Dave Allen...The Comedy Sketches", 3/4 includes the funeral, but at the end, so you could still react to the first part. Best Wishes. ☮
Brilliant Mandy, still hilarious 😊😊😊😊😊❤Ps, Dave Allen had a one hour show on Saturday night television so there should be a fair amount of clips still available, hope so ❤
He tells a great ghost story too.. I prefer his story telling jokes more than his sketches.. Although the sketch about a convicts last wish before his execution is really funny..
Great reaction, love how you caught on to the Adam and (before) Eve bit. The Funeral joke is, In the name of the Father, Son, and the holy ghost, the mistake by Allen is ( In the name of the Father, Son, and into the hole he goes)..
Hi Mandy, I was re-watching your first reaction to WILTY yesterday, when people tried to explain what a pram was, the thing they drag out of the bushes to put the coffin on is a pram.
The best part about all of this is when you add in the context of him doing these jokes in Ireland..a country completely at the behest of the Catholic Church at the time 👀
Dave Allen was raised Irish Catholic, so the Catholic Church was a frequent target of his comedy. He used to portray the Pope in all sorts of ridiculous ways, eg. the Pope is carried in his chair by his aides on foot, and makes them go faster until he gets busted for speeding; the Pope doing a strip tease dance on the steps of the Vatican. Ironically (especially as a self-proclaimed atheist), he always ended his shows by saying "Good night, and may your God go with you".
Loved you reaction and laughter. Only one you missed was that at the funeral. The priest/vicar said " in the name of the father, the son and into the holy ghost" The young dave Allen thought he said " in the name of the father, the son and into the hole he goes"
You heard that joke before about him blessing himself when he was talking about his first day at school. Instead of saying 'the holy ghost' he says 'and into the hole he goes'
Just for your information the joke you didn't get was the father the son and the Holy Ghost but he said for years I believed it was the father the son and into the whole he goes that might help you understand the joke
Carl WHO? He had his own show, with sketches and ev'rythin' !! He was great. I always loved he hailed from one of the most Catholic places in the world: Ireland, but identified iconoclastically as an A-theist. I suspect he single-handedly broke the Pope's stranglehold on his country (posthumously), just wearing down the contradictions and fallacies. Wish he was alive to see the cultural change. 😊🥲
The line you missed was “in the name of the father, and of the son, and into the hole he goes” 😅 I’m Irish born and bred, lived here all 46 years of my life and I’ve NEVER heard of the custom about first buried, first served 😅 Until of course I saw that sketch 😅
Happy birthday to me. Happy birthday to me. I never heard of that "first person to be buried gets to heaven" rule, either. I wonder who thought that up. Gideon's Bible. I remember they used to give out pocket Bible at schools, years ago. Him: I didn't put him here to be happy! Me: Oh? Well, excuse me. Give me five minutes. 😂
He divided opinion here in his native Ireland in his heyday, because of the stranglehold the Catholic church had on the hearts and minds (and wallets) of the people, up until very recent years. My mother always loved him, but her (boomer) generation here almost liked Dave in a quiet way, as his openly atheist take was VERY much a no-no. Britain and, perhaps especially, Australia, was where he flourished initially. He lived and had huge TV success in the latter for many years.
It was : "in the name of the father, the son, and into the hole he goes" 😂
it was clearly spoken and she still didnt get the joke
Came here to explain that bit about into the hole he goes, instead of the holy ghost, but I'm three days late... 🙂

I grew up watching this show. Hilarious. Dave Allen was a great comedian.
"And he sees that Adam is happy..." is the funniest line, it's so casual.
It's the way he's taking God's perspective looking down on Adam lol.
In a hotel room you will often find a Gideon bible. Your laughter is a tonic! x
That coffin sketch never gets old.
…and into the hole he goes! 🤣
His “ teaching your child to tell time “ is freaking hilarious 😂

First watched him more than 50 years ago and still makes me laugh.

He seems to be a very special man, even for what comedians are today. 🙌🏻✨️
@@MandyCaneLane This is purely anecdotal but a lot of women found him funny, possibly because there was more to his comedy than mother-in-law jokes.
I always loved it when he told his ghost/horror jokes, when the lights went down and his delivery was perfect.
I love his delivery! So casual, so well timed!
@@MandyCaneLane Manage to see him live in a theatre in the early 90s. Laughed so much I was nearly in tears :-)

One of his best sketches is the bank note under the car wheel
Love Dave. My ma and da would let me stay up late on a Sunday night to watch his show as a kid.
What a sweet memory to have 🤗
Dave still my number one comedian of all time!
Dave was a master of 'sit down' comedy, tempered with well produced sketches. It's all good - explore more, Mandy. You won't regret it
Thaks Mandy, always good to remind people how brilliant Dave Allen is
Dave Allen made umpteen brilliant sketches.
Thanks for a great reaction

the Gideon bible that you can find in most hotel/motel rooms
