Bless your heart for laughing out loud at a proper comedian doing their thing. There's no malice in any of this, it's just clever observations and pure humour x
They had to retake this about 25 times because the actors-especially the Chinese lady-were in fits of laughter. 'This is not my sandwich' was ad-libbed by Catherine from something the actor said when they broke for lunch.Genius.
I can imagine that…She probably added it in to break him up. To his credit he kept it together, at least in the final take. This clip never fails to slay me.
Literally, she’s a comedy genius. Everybody gets this, no matter what nationality. And, you’re right, it’s probably one of the best [BEST] comedy sketches, ever!
Catherine Tate is one of the best female comedians EVER! And you’re right …. You wouldn’t be “allowed” to laugh at something like this any more. No one is laughing at their expense … but at how ridiculous she is being. We’ve all lost so much laughter and sadly, divisiveness and hate seems to be replacing it 😢
Is that really true though? I'm not sure. Comedians are still pushing the limits and probably offending some people who have no sense of humour. But yeah, seeing a sketch like this would be more surprising these days. Possibly because nobody does sketch shows these days. Who you're laughing at is important like you say. Nothing offensive about this if you get the joke.
Catherine Tate is beyond talented. This sketch never fails to have me laughing. You're right, it wouldn't be made now. But I genuinely believe it's mocking British people's stereotypes of anyone not British, rather than mocking the races or cultures. I'd love to see a version from other countries and how they portray the Brits. 😅
The running joke of this character was that she keeps volunteering for tasks she has absolutely no experience or ability for and always causes a disaster. That's why the audience laughed when the manager said that the translator hadn't turned up.
@dlk1dlk1 I found her "helping" someone in a salsa dance competition and a curling team. If you search for "Catherine Tate I can do that" you should find them. It's a long time since I saw them and was sure that she caused a couple of workplace disasters, maybe I'm wrong.
They had to do this sketch over and over again as the Asian lady [and sometimes the African man] couldn't stop laughing. Those where the better days [much more so than today's evil times] when one could have fun.
It was frowned upon then by some and is frowned upon today by some, but back then there were people in tv who would give the middle finger to the killjoys. Maybe not so much now.

This is absolutely true, in the Plymouth magistrates court ,,,, about 30 years ago,,,, there was a German who needed an interpreter, to attempt to move the case on the magistrates asked if anyone could speak German and translate, a member in the gallery stated that he spoke German, stood up and shouted, ‘Vot is yuuur name, you commen to zis country unt you can’t sprechanzy English, zo I’m helping. ‘ Needless to say Court was adjourned until a proper interpreter was found.
