They had to retake this about 25 times because the actors-especially the Chinese lady-were in fits of laughter. 'This is not my sandwich' was ad-libbed by Catherine from something the actor said when they broke for lunch.Genius.

Catherine Tate is one of the best female comedians EVER! And you’re right …. You wouldn’t be “allowed” to laugh at something like this any more. Is that really true though? I'm not sure. Comedians are still pushing the limits and probably offending some people who have no sense of humour. But yeah, seeing a sketch like this would be more surprising these days. Possibly because nobody does sketch shows these days. Who you're laughing at is important like you say. Nothing offensive about this if you get the joke.

@@geoffpoole483 - You'd think so, wouldn't you? But practicalities on the day sometimes win out. I've been on a jury where the official translator was having a hard time of it, and an unofficial translator took over. There were jurors who were also able to understand and speak the other language, so the whole thing 'muddled through'. The language issue in the first place was a ploy by the defendant, who spoke English but chose the other language. In the end, the defendant changed his plea from not guilty to guilty. Took a week because of the shenanigans; it was utterly frustrating for the jurors, I can tell you! It was a murder trial, BTW, and the defendant's main argument seemed to be that he didn't recognise the authority of the court. I'm in New Zealand, which has a major issue with language and culture and rules that are interpreted differently, dependent upon self-determined ethnicity. The word 'ap@rthe!d' is no stranger to the New Zealand lexicon.

@@84com83 I'm Scottish. Everybody and their Aunty has slaughtered Scottish Accents. We just howl with laughter.
And, yes, I saw one where a comedian literally made noises similar to bagpipes for our words. 😂

Yes, it's a brilliant character wasn't it?! You were always wondering what she was about to absolutely blunder in to.

Glad you laughed so hard and genuinely. You said, "they" wouldn't allow this to be played now, meaning all the virtue signaling censorship in the U.S. But in other countries there are plenty of vids showing folks mocking American English speakers! So anyway, good for you for reacting instinctively to the humor in this skit.

Honestlhy I found it refreshing that you got it. No disrespect to American audiences but it often seems like a differnt sense of huoour and sometimes it feels like they don't get the joke or maybe take it more seriously and don't realise that she's just playing a character for her comedy. x

One line gets me laughing at the beginning is when she says ‘I did a TEFL course in my gap year’ (Teaching English as a Foreign Language in language schools overseas) as though this qualified her to be interpreter!
