@@samuelpinder1215 because so many people miss the point of the joke, the butt of the joke is the "translator" not the other people, if it were simply someone doing accents it would not be funny, the joke comes from her being an idiot
Because it's only offensive to a minority but tge rest of us let them dictate to us what we are allowed to find funny too. Sad but we are controlled by the humourless elite.
Individuals may enjoy it, but instead of the 90s where people were quite left, there is a big shift to the right and then it gets tricky, because the bigger the group that thinks blacks, gays and asians are worthless, the more this humor will be used against the groups of minorities. To emphasize why you would not help an asian or care for the feelings of a black man
This was part of a series of sketches with this character who always claimed 'I can do that' whenever anyone needed someone with a particular skill. She always failed spectacularly, which was hilarious. This is the final sketch in the series and the one sketch that people comment on.
Love the reaction. Have to remember though, this is a running character in this one episode. She's the "I can do that" girl, when she obviously can't. There's her playing tennis, salsa dancing, ice curling and playing drums for a band on tv. This interpretar clip is the best of them all though!
The "this is not my sandwich" remark was in reference to the lunch break before the final take where the guy was given the wrong sandwich and he said the above. Tate just threw that in at the end which made him lose it 😂
That’s true. Also apparently they had to do many takes because the Chinese woman and Nigerian man were laughing so much, could not keep straight faces.
I’m so pleased this clip is getting so many reaction videos..it is humbling. We love to tease each other…I’m a Brit in France and the French impression of the British in film is speaking French with a posh accent.. 😊
I am so glad to be old enough to have experience this era. This would never be possible now in our boring, easily offended pc world. I am Swedish and i laugh hysterically about it!! I find her Derek character absolutely hilarious as well and i am gay myself!
I can never understand why people get so fended , every time I watch this I’m in tiers of laughter 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. This is from a British born Greek, just wish she can do a Greek accent
This was on mainstream UK TV about 15 or 20 years ago which as a man in his 60s doesn't seem very long ago to me. Now it wouldn't be allowed because everyone's so sensitive
the depressing thing for me is that now people seem to miss the point of the joke, the joke wasn't the funny accents, it was the fact that the "translator" is an idiot. Just like like people get offended at basil faulty and the Germans when the butt of that joke is basil and not the Germans
The reason she said this is not my sandwich was because before filming he went into the fridge to get his sandwich and couldn't find it , so she put it into the sketch and there were so many takes ..they were all gutting themselves. The Chinese woman couldn't stop laughing .. I love that story 🤣
I showed this my kid, she's 15. She thought it was hilarious. Not sure why people keep saying "people are so easily offended these days", you must all spend far too much time on the internet and listening to people complaining about people being offended.
You couldn't get away with this now. But it's not racist at all, not so much because it covers quite a few countries. But more in the fact we as Brits are having a pop at ourselves. Simply because when it comes to learning languages we're pretty poor at learning them on the whole. So imitating the sound of the accent thinking we're communicating is hilarious.
He's a very serious young man isn't he? You should have a little laughometer at the side, with a little dial that moves if he cracks a smile and goes all the way for an actual laugh. Then give it a laugh score.
Watched this multiple times - so funny. Pardon my ignorance though - can someone tell me the significance of 'this is not my sandwich?' It gets a huge laugh but I don't know why lol.
'This is not my sandwich' is so random but hilarious. I wish we still had the ability to laugh at ourselves like this. Hard though it now is to believe, comedy was once funny.
I’ve watched this since the first episode and still laugh .. and even though I find the ‘this is not my sandwich’ one really funny.. Ive honestly never got it lol
Why it’s funny, because the woman is clearly Japanese not Chinese and when non Asians tries to imitate Asians, which is a geographical term, not a “race”, they always try and make it sounds Chinese, even when it isn’t nor do they make the sounds right either🤣🤣🤣 Love Tate🤭 I’m “Asian”, and I love all her sketches. One of the best indeed🤙🏾
The sandwich comment for the African guy was because during a break he commented about having the wrong sandwich on set. Let’s just say there were lots of takes as the actors couldn’t keep it together.
It took s long time to film because they were all laughing. The African guy said that’s not my sandwich when they has a break when she threw that in unexpectedly he chicked trying not to laugh.

And it’s not that they weren’t offended back in the day, it’s just that they just got away with it because no one dared to speak up. It’s not the comedian who decides whether something is funny or not, but the audience. Humor is subjective and culturally biased. And yes this plays on stereotypes which is why it’s funny because it’s true. It’s how people who don’t speak the language think it sounds like. It’s lighthearted and not mean. BUT if she had pulled her eyes while making her Chinese interpretation when the lady is Japanese, that would be racist. And racist people today still get away with things, and when people that are being mocked, let them know it’s not funny, ht hurtful, the common response is: “omg can’t you take a joke?” which is literally gaslighting and invalidating people’s feelings. Especially white people are used to getting away with racist “jokes” because it has been the norm. But now we know better, and that certain things is not okay to joke about for everyone… jokes are to be funny, not mean.
Her offensive translator was not the only offensive sketch with the character, Helen. The idea is that the character says yes to anything to impress, although she has no skills. Just to give you context if you didn't know or wanted it.
